Castle new Rugby Australia boss: reports

By Adrian Warren / Wire

Former Canterbury NRL chief executive Raelene Castle is reportedly to take over as Rugby Australia’s new boss and make another piece of sports administration history.

» Rugby AU confirm Castle as new CEO
» Raelene Castle ticks the right boxes, but does she tick the crucial ones?

A number of media outlets reported late on Monday evening and early Tuesday morning that New Zealander Castle would be appointed to succeed incumbent chief executive Bill Pulver.

Announcing in August that Perth’s Western Force was being cut from Super Rugby, Pulver said he would stand down once a replacement was found.

His contract is due to expire next February and it is not yet clear if he will see out his tenure

Rugby Australia has yet to confirm the Castle’s appointment, with News Corp Australia reporting it will be announced on Tuesday.

If confirmed, Castle would become the first female boss of any of the national governing bodies of the four major football codes in Australia.

She was the first female CEO of an NRL club and stepped down from the role in May.

Prior to that she headed up Netball New Zealand.

At the Bulldogs, Castle oversaw three finals appearances, including 2014’s losing grand final.

But her final year at the club was less successful as coach Des Hasler was re-signed for two years in April before being sacked after the club finished 11th.

The debacle led to Hasler taking the Bulldogs to court, seeking $2 million in damages after allegedly being told his contract was not binding.

Pulver has also endured a difficult 2017, with much of the anger over the Western Force’s axing from Super Rugby directed towards the Sydneysider as the struggling Melbourne Rebels were spared.

Someone above said she went to school in Sydney, or at least in NSW somewhere. My comments were to clarify how much of an AU she is, apparently only a few months as a baby? Thanks for that Mike but still not clear. Did she stay in NZ until she went to Canterbury Bankstown and what was her efforts like as head of NZ netball; negative dispersions above on that as well. Most people on here don’t seem too concerned about her administrative record, but that she is different and that’s the main thing?

As a professional yes. She will be doing her best that the role requires. Like many professionals across the world. Speculation about her sex or origins are left to nobodies on the internet. Analysis about her ability to do a job are left up to educated professionals who are in a position to hire her.

Her career is not measured by the wallabies beating the ab's unlike a head coach or a player in the team. A coach or a player has direct emotional and professional investment in their team, a CEO is well removed. Her ambit is far wider. So you think she will forget her emotional lifetime support of a team.

settle down once that those that were the architects of the Force fiasco have been kept to account. Clyne, Pulver and Eales need to go and the sooner the better.

I welcome Raelene Castle's appointment. Her first job will be to restore the RA's standing by convincing the RA Board to come clean. Can she achieve that while Cameron Clyne is the chair, I doubt it but would love to be contradicted. Her second job will be to restore relations with Western Australia. Making statement's like Pulver's classic "There will always be a Western Force blah blah blah" will be a mistake. But "I will work with RugbyWA and Twiggy Forrest/the IPRC to fix the mess I have inherited" will be a good start. Good luck Raelene Castle, RA is currently a bottom feeder and so the only way for you is up!!

So now you see her insides. I'm sure Eddie is gutted that he has beaten the Wallabies 5 times in a row.

I didn't know she went to school in Sydney but the reason she was born in Wagga was that her father was capt./coach of the Turvey Park Rugby League team at the time. She returned to NZ at 6 months old.

A woman, a leaguie, a NZer and an AB fan, what a mix up, except she was born in NSW: Went to school in Sydney? How much of her early life was in AU? An AB fan head of ARU? How well does she know Tew? A fair bit to get the head around before one can get clinical about the appointment. Being brought up in Sydney and going to school here really means she is AU’n, so at least she won’t have the prejudices Deans had to put up with...and so it goes on and on, no it definitely is not an AU 5th column move to take over the NZRU! No that’s all frivolity she’s got the qualifications and nous to get results, especially recruitment from schools? Clyne likes her otherwise she would not have been selected, so if you think Clyne has the answers all is well?

Won't happen. I have always been a massive AB fan, but every time I have represented an Aussie team against a NZ one, I have wanted to beat them the same as any other opponent. I'm sure Raelene is a big enough person not to mix her support as a fan with her role as a professional. A bit like Eddie Jones at the moment.

Well, we have a lot of negativity today on the appointment. The lady's tenure at the Bulldogs does not appear positive but we need to remember all of the problems may "stop with her" but they were not all caused by Ms. Castle. She is new, she is a change and she appears to be qualified. I think initially we should sit and remain positive and give the lady a chance to be able to define her steps and communicate her role and priorities and the steps she will take to hopefully bring about a strong Rugby mantle in Australia. That said, I am not certain this will occur under the current RA Board. But another point of concern re the comments. Those that expect her appointment to bring about success on the field. In my opinion, and I might be wrong, I do not think that that task is her position's role. I thought that field success was the role of Cheika and the four SR Team coaches that are employed to do so. I just hope, in all honesty, that she is more open - or the point being - that under her tenure that the RA will be more open and direct to the Rugby public in their decisions, reasons for and their role in improving Rugby in Australia. We can only hope and pray that changes will occur.

With 16 of the 56 major sporting franchises in Australia and the job, all being located in Sydney, isn't it pretty likely that a candidate will living in Sydney at some recent point?

Still, google maps tells me Canterbury is only 10kms from central Sydney hardly an 'outsider'. Still, all the best to her - can't possibly be worse than the current gaggle from where I sit.

So? I'm a member of WCE supporters on Facebook, all the Aussie and Kiwi super teams and half a dozen rival gridiron teams - it never hurts to be in on the conversation of your opponents. Don't assume belonging to a group means anything
