Rising Roar stump Sydney

By Stuart Thomas / Expert

Brisbane Roar have defied the tipsters and pulled off a remarkable win against an out of sync Sydney FC.

In a stunning victory off the back of two first-half goals, John Aloisi’s team now look a real threat for the finals after knocking of the ladder leading Sydney and keeping in touch with the race for fifth and sixth spot.

After a positive start for the home team, Brisbane struck first with a glancing header from Matt McKay and followed it up with a simple conversion from Jacob Pepper after an excellent ball from Ivan Franjic.

Both goals came within the first twenty minutes and Sydney seemed stunned. Graham Arnold called for calm and despite a few half chances, the home side were unable to get a meaningful shot on target in the first half.

With both teams struggling in the heat, half-time was greeted by both and Aloisi must have emphasised the positive approach required in the second period.

His team responded and despite Sydney eventually pulling one back from a Jordi Buijs cross and a Milos Ninkovic header, the Sky Blues never really built enough pressure on the Brisbane goal, despite plenty of possession.

David Carney mysteriously left the ground at half-time and we hope everything is okay with him, Alex Brosque was caught on camera appearing to spit towards someone or something and a total of twelve minutes of stoppage time were added when it didn’t appear anywhere near that amount was justified.

All in all it was a great win for Brisbane and another loss for the faltering Sydney.

I wrote earlier in the week that it was time for the other A-League teams to attack Sydney and Brisbane have lead the way.

Whether the champions can respond remains to be seen and the Jets will be squirming in their seats with an eye still on the Premiers Plate.

jb “The question, Can this new signing make a Socceroo position his own?” ... are you seriously suggesting that every signing an A league club makes should be able to make the Socceroos? That’s a laughable comment and it sounds like you dont know how the salary cap works or what impact it brings to the quality of players being signed ... and yet I know you do so I suggest there’s just a little bit of devilment in your comment. Let me ask you a question, when Arnold signed Matt Simon do you believe Arnie thought he could make the Socceroos squad? And when Roar signed Oetratos did you think he could make the Socceroos squad, because he has?

Lionheart - Just ask yourself a simple question and from that answer you will be able to gauge Roar's "football philosophy" for the future. The question, Can this new signing make a Socceroo position his own?" The answers, when applied to individual players, actually determines the standard of play that the club wishes to attain. For example our mutual friend Waz mentions 2 players ,Thwaite and Harold, being in the rumour mill and right away alarm bells ring in my head for Michael,a man of many clubs, is now in the veteran stage of his career and is no longer included in anyone's Socceroo selections. Chris is at the other end of the spectrum,he showed some fine qualities when playing at GCU,but now, after some good playing time at Perth, his "promise" has stagnated somewhat into just another local kid made good. You too mention Henrique , a throwback to better days at Roar, where to be honest, he actually deserved the title "super sub". His time at Adelaide and elsewhere has done nothing to change that observation. In today's football, and the way it is developing both here and overseas, you want to keep up with the "big boys" or become another "make up the competition" identity. What do Roar want for themselves or their long suffering fans? That is the real question to be answered. Cheers jb.

Agreed there Waz - what style does Aloisi prefer? thus what players fit? Club identity too, and culture are equally important. I think Henrique was an attempt to regain some of that, but he's our history now. We need some Queenslanders in the team, what have they done to Corey Brown? and some of our homegrown youngsters deserve a go. We're more like Sydney are under Aloisi, ignoring our depth except when we're forced to use them through injury.

That depends whether you think he’ll sign another ten like it? Names in the frame so far are O’Doherty, Thwaite and Chris Harold. For me it’s not just who he signs it’s who he lets go - Theo, Maccarone, North, FBK, Mackay and Hollman all need dealing with and, imo, no more than two should be kept on. And before all that, he friggin needs to figure out how he wants his team to play - he can bitch n moan all he wants about disrupted preseason but we all remember 3 at the back grrr

It’s still not clear how much money you can make, FB will give a 55% share of the ad revenue in your stream but there’s no indication how much that is - the top YouTube pre-recorded content providers get around $7 per 1,000 ad views which (if replicated here) would be over $200k, and even if we assume it won’t be premium Ads the NPL picks up even if it’s $30-$40k per Ad, times that by 5 adverts and there’s a deal there

If the recent signing of Henrique is an indicator of how JA will go about signings, I'm not looking forward to his next rebuild.

Each viewer can earn the clubs/league $2, that's $114,000. It's money for jam.

Depending on the website analytics, the figures on web viewing are more accurate than any possible OzTAM estimation. There are tools that can identify each unique IP Address that logs onto a website. Further you can monitor how long that person stayed logged on to the website; how long he/she looked at a specific page, etc. So, the 57,000 viewers is fantastic if it refers to "unique viewing" IP addresses. Then we need to find out how long they stayed watching. If 57k stayed watching for at least 20 minutes, that would be massive for semi-pro football & it could be easily monetised with online advertising. If someone is viewing for 20 minutes or longer, at least $2 advertising revenue for each such viewer would not be unreasonable. Around $20M advertising revenue for a 2nd Division with 14 teams playing 13 home matches each.

Off topic , but regarding football in Sydney last night ... Apparently 57000 viewers on Facebook for Sydney United v Blacktown city for the npl match last night . Now I take ratings with a grain of salt , but even if it’s rougly accurate, it shows that people want to see these likely second div A league teams and that media streaming of football is becoming a interesting player in the future of football. Lambton jaffas v Edgeworth eagles also streamed live on bar tv yesterday, not sure they quite got 57000 viewers , maybe A league division 3 for these teams ?

The new appointment highlights some glaring deficiencies in Roar over the past few years (not just the JA years but going back as far as Dobson/Stead/Mulvey) where everyone was a football person but with no business administration skills. Someone still needs to decide the football philosophy to be followed, Select the type of players required and identify suitable candidates ... that’s a coaching team responsibility, the new guys job is to negotiate terms. Get that bit right and then you just have to avoid the wheels coming off at any stage in preseason and the season itself. The “mystery” to me looks like the various ego’s involved last winter had a massive blue and the football/non-football dept all fell out, why that spilled medical staff and not others is a mystery.

Waz - Think there was a bit of misunderstanding. The players I was talking about as having been at Roar before JA arrived in 2015 were Young 2014,,Hingert 2011,Bowles 2008 and Mackay, 2010 plus the young substitute left back who has come through the ranks. I was not referring as to who actually signed their contracts though to be honest there appears to be a little confusion as to whether that signature was that of JA or the belated CM. jb

Waz -Thanks for the reply though to be honest I don't really get the bit of "mystery" contained therein. My thinking is tending towards the appointment of their latest football manager who ,as reported, is 30 years of age and has worked for the FFA mainly in overseeing contract limitations for 7 of those years, a long time considering the dormant "life" of many contracts... He is also reported as being the holder of an honours degree in Sports Management which one would have to assume he did at a learning establishment and if so,would have taken him at least 3 years full time study to achieve. That takes him back to having a 2 year "hole" in his education and job experience but actually curtails any other experience he may have gained in running a professional football team. It leaves one wondering who recommended this man for the job,was it the FFA? or was he looking at a change in career direction ,a change that many would regard as "jumping from the frying pan into the fire". The intrigue just won't go away ,will it? Any thoughts?. Cheers jb..

Good to win but I'm not reading much into it. I had tipped a draw as I thought roar were a chance with Sydney being obviously affected by ACL duties despite what Arnie says and the benefits of flying business class. As seen elsewhere in the comments, other teams are hardly going to fear Brisbane based on the goals we scored and by the scorers themselves. Brisbane has the fourth lowest goals for in the comp with only 2 more (after last night) than Wellington who sit bottom - so we are hardly going to have defensive coaches shaking in their boots coming in the coming weeks - regardless of last nights effort.

The referee. But for the FFA to take action the ref would need to fall to the ground pretending he’d been hit by it ... a bit like Matt Simon did

yeah but JA would respond “I’ve won 5 out of the last 7 games, I should have drawn with City only my marquee striker fluffed a penalty, we should have beaten Jets with 4 clear cut chances in the first half alone including a Franjic missed open goal .... oh, and my makeshift CB pairing is actually pretty decent”

Cannot be optimistic about getting in the top 6. If JA could see the weakness of Sydney FC in the ACL to prepare to capitalize on it, other teams can do the same to the Roars in the remaining matches, knowing the absence of Roars' top centre-backs (Jade, Papa, Devere). John Aloisi declared planned. https://www.a-league.com.au/news/aloisi-lifts-lid-brisbane-roars-secret-sydney-fc-upset https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/a-league/aleague-round-23-live-stream-wellington-v-newcastle-jets-sydney-fc-v-brisbane-roar/news-story/02e34675b37f032cadc1a7ec0c63ae46 Two set-pieces tactics scored while equally two set-pieces tactics by the opponent also netted, just one to be off-sided. This adds interest to see how Roars can defend in the coming matches.

Sydney woes in recent weeks are coming as Davey carney plays a bigger role in the team , once again this guy is bringing down a team from with in , with it’s all about me attitude. Good job carney, mission almost accomplished.

jb. Just for clarity, every player in Roars squad has been signed by JA, either new or re-signed to a contract under his watch. This is his squad and as you say, 3 years in he should be judged on it. Personally I’m not convinced by him, I think he lacks the necessary toughness and leadership skills to be an excellent coach. He reminds me a bit of a young Peter Taylor, he needs to work with a strong man to be successful. His get out of jail card is whatever went on in pre-season, and something big happened that we don’t know about thanks to an inept media. The medical and conditioning staff rotated twice in a short period of time and JA and his football department fell out with the rest of the club. Whatever “that” was will save him, at least until Christmas.
