What an overhauled Australian ODI team should look like

By mrrexdog / Roar Guru

While most of the talk about Australian cricket team over the past few weeks has been about the struggles of the Test side, the one-day team has struggled over the past year.

The sides last series victory came in January 2017 against Pakistan. Since then Australia has lost series against New Zealand, India and England. Australia was also knocked out of the Champions Trophy in the group stage.

The Australian one-day team needs to be overhauled. Steve Smith and David Warner both struggled during the England ODI series, so their suspensions will allow white-ball specialists to play instead.

Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh and Nathan Coulter-Nile are currently injured but would have been in the squad if fit. Jason Behrendorf would have been in contention were he not also injured. Josh Hazlewood has been left out of the squad so that he can work on his red-ball bowling.

The basic set-up of the side would consist of an aggressive top three and a stable middle order, followed by some aggressive hitters and then the bowlers.

This is the side that should go to England in June.

Australia One-day XI

Nic Maddinson
Despite his mediocre first-class record, he has performed well in both one-day and Twenty20 cricket at a domestic level. Maddinson’s aggressive batting makes him a valuable opener.

D’Arcy Short
The Big Bash League leading run scorer has had limited opportunities at list a level. This is because Western Australia’s batting line-up consists of Michael Klinger, Shaun Marsh, Cam Bancroft, Mitch Marsh, Ashton Turner and Hilton Cartwright.

Short has batted at seven and taken the role of spinner while first-choice Ashton Agar has been injured. His Big Bash record shows that he is capable of opening the batting. Short would form a powerful opening combination alongside Maddinson, and he also provides some handy left-arm off spin.

Glenn Maxwell
Maxwell deserves the opportunity to bat up the order and play his aggressive game with the field up in order to maximise his impact on the game.

George Bailey (captain)
Bailey was axed from the ODI team at the end of 2016 following a run of poor performances. He responded with a strong run of form in domestic one-day cricket, averaging 78 in the English One-Day Cup. He also averaged 62 in the JLT Cup. Bailey is a fine leader who brings a stable head to an aggressive batting line-up.

Tim Paine (wicketkeeper)
Paine’s ability to stabilise during a batting collapse was on show during the recent South Africa Test series. He also gives the side a safe set of hands behind the stumps.

Aaron Finch (vice-captain)
Finch proved he has the ability to bat down the order in Australia’s Twenty20 tri-series. Finch is an excellent player of spin and will provide a valuable lower-order hitter. He should bat at six but could be promoted ahead of Paine and Bailey if the situation dictates.

Marcus Stoinis
The injury to Mitch Marsh means Stoinis will get the number seven spot.

Pat Cummins
Cummins has continued to impress since making his return from injury.

Jhye Richardson
Richardson impressed on his ODI debut and deserves to hold his spot seeing as both Starc and Coulter-Nile are injured.

Andrew Tye
White-ball specialist Andrew Tye performed well in the ODI team during the summer.

Fawad Ahmed
After Adam Zampa’s underwhelming home summer its time for Australia to pick a new ODI spinner. Ahmed deserves the position ahead of Nathan Lyon and Ashton Agar because of his outstanding bowling in the one-day cup this season. He was the tournament’s joint third leading wicket-taker, taking 12 wickets at 26.83

Reserves

Kane Richardson
Richardson bowled well during Australia’s ODI tour of India and also did well in the Twenty20 tri-series.

Dan Christian
With Mitch Marsh injured there were no standout candidates to go as back-up to Marcus Stoinis. Christian’s recent good form in English conditions over the past few seasons sees him fill that role.

Peter Handscomb
Despite his recent struggles in first-class cricket, Handscomb played well in this season’s one-day cup and BBL. He is back-up to Bailey and Paine, and his excellent fielding makes him an ideal 12th man.

Travis Head
Head’s aggressive batting makes him back-up for Maddinson, Short, Maxwell and Finch.

Joe Mennie
Mennie was the joint leading wicket-taker in the one-day cup, taking 13 wickets at 22.53 with an excellent strike rate of 4.66.

Finch should get captaincy over Paine he has represented Australia in Odis 90 odd games to Paine's 20,30 odd and the only one with more then 2 100s in the team 10 to be exact I don't think anyone else has 2 tbh. He's the only one in the top 15 batsman in the world in is format and even domestically Finch has 160 odd games to Paine's 120 odd.

LOL i just dont know why he hasn't been given a chance he is so consistent and is exactly what Aus need in that position a player who can be aggressive but steady the innings as well.

Of course Nic Maddinson leading run scorer in domestic one day cricket for the last 3 years with a average of 52 and a strike rate of 90! And a great fielder. Aaron finch to captain no need to go back to Bailey . Khawaja must play . Ashton turner is ready and could be a damaging striker at 7 and Alex carey to keep!

Im not a big fan of stacking the team with all rounders. This team has 4 great bowlers with Stoinis to cover the other 10 overs and if Stoinis gets hit around you have Short and Maxwell to cover. Darcy Short's record on the JLT is as good as a guenuine bowler so you would think he can do a decent job as a cover bowler. The batting depth is immense in this squad and Starc provides reverse swing which is vital in the middle overs and will play a massive part in England and was the main reason why Pakistan was so successful in the Champions trophy. Hughes and Stoinis have showed great ability to stabilize and accelerate an innings which has been Australia's weak point in the batting. I think Maxwell is best used at the end of the innings trying to play like T20 and will add the much needed fire power we need.

Agree the side doesn't need a complete overhaul. Simply put, Smith and Warner need to be replaced, injuries covered and the batting order seriously considered. Carey instead of Paine, possibly. Khawaja deserves a shot at opening. Detractors need to look at his one day form only. Great opportunity for Maxwell to get some continuity and step up.

Some one's been watching too many "back to the future movies" Coulter-nile hasn't been playing too many matches as well as Patterson. But we can't expect starc,Hazelwood or Cummins to keep carrying the can forever. Lots of young guys playing shield but people keep wanting too persist with Bailey, marshes etc. Maybe consider Mitch marsh for 1 day matches. But when you have guys like Howard and johns involved and even Greg Chappell not a lot will change.

This is the best side 1 Finch c 2 Short 3 Head 4 Maxwell 5 Lynn 6 Stoinis 7 Carey 8 Agar 9 Cummins 10 Richardson 11 Hazelwood But there will be at least 4,5 changes to that side for the world cup.

18 games over 5 years isn't much of a run.

Finch fits the first two criteria too, Pedro. As for the third, Smith can't captain for two years, wihch means he won't be captaining in the World Cup. We should be after a skipper who can do that. Bailey and Smith aren't the answer there. Besides, I completely disagree with the premise that Smith is the 'obvious skipper'. I don't think he is a very good tactician in the short formats and he is too risk-averse with his field settings and bowling changes. Eoin Morgan destroyed him in that area in the ODIs. The fourth point isn't specifically relevant to captaincy. I don't see a need to turn to Bailey as a player but I wouldn't be upset if he was picked.

Don't really mind which two of Ussie, Head and Short they go for, Ouch. UK in and Head as backup looks fine too. I'd prefer Head but I'm not going to die in a ditch over it.

I still think the best thing for both of the short form sides is to pick squads, rather than teams. Smith & Warner showed last season that choosing a team makes it hard to drop players/batsmen, if conditions don't suit, they're out of form, etc. Your squad looks just about right James
