Rabbitohs upset Roosters to move into top eight

By Scott Bailey / Wire

South Sydney have claimed bragging rights over star-studded NRL arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters, downing them 26-14 at Allianz Stadium.

Beaten by their traditional rivals in four of their past five clashes, the Rabbitohs’ big men monstered the Roosters’ pack on Thursday night to put themselves in the top eight.

Damien Cook was again dangerous out of dummy-half and was easily the Rabbitohs’ best.

The NSW State of Origin aspirant busted through the line a number of times for his 142 metres to set the tone for the win.

Thomas Burgess and John Sutton were both powerful – the latter scoring a try – as the Bunnies controlled possession in the first hour and wracked up almost 200 more metres than their rivals.

After they went to halftime locked up at 8-8, Souths assumed control of the contest in the 43rd minute when Richard Kennar and Dane Gagai folded James Tedesco in half in his own in-goal.

It prompted the ball to spill free, bouncing off the three players before Angus Crichton picked it up and scored.

Their lead then went to 10 just moments later when Greg Inglis leaped above Tedesco to collect a Cody Walker bomb and score.

The Roosters threatened a comeback when Ryan Matterson crossed after a Cooper Cronk kick, but Sutton put the match beyond doubt when he powered over in the 65th minute following nifty lead-up play from Adam Reynolds.

The loss was the Roosters’ third of the year to put them at 3-3 after six rounds, despite the big-name off-season signings of Cronk and Tedesco.

After absorbing a heap of early South Sydney pressure, their attack failed to click late in the second half when possession and territory swung back in their favour.

Tedesco provided their only real moment of excitement in the first half when he burst downfield for Latrell Mitchell to score a magical mid-air try and give them an 8-2 lead.

But when the Rabbitohs hit back moments later through Robert Jennings, the Roosters were behind for the rest of the match.

Sorry mate. You’re right. Souths have been by far the best team in the comp since round one. The only losses they’ve had they wuz robbed and they were by far the best team in all their wins. You’re a cretin. Don’t comment on anyone else’s ability to read a game...you can’t see the game through your red and green pom poms. You even manage to turn a comment complimenting your team into an insult you negative little one eyed twerp.

Why unimpressed Barry? Rd 1 lost to the Warriors by 12 and had a 10 point turnaround against us when a fair try to Jennings was ruled forward just before halftime. It would have been 16 all. 8 Penalties to 2 against in the second half The Warriors were holding our players down so we couldn't get a roll on, NO Penalties to us though! Rd 2 The Panthers, we led 14 to nil before plenty of 50/50 calls went against us. Peter Wallace should have been penalised 5 times for holding down and for illegal marker play, not square and the rules not enforced at all. 9 to 2 Penalty count against us in the second half. 3 trys each Both of those game the huge Penalty counts against us in searing heat meant we had to do over 100 more tackles than our opposition. We simply ran out of petrol. Rd 3 Smashed Manly Rd 4 Only 3 Penalty goals to your mob were the only reason your rabble led but we smashed you in the last 10 minutes. 4 trys to 2 Rd 5 St Merge, 3 Penalty goals to the Dragons, 2 passes ruled forward that were good. 2 knockbacks ruled Knock on, all in the first half. 2 trys each, No Sam Burges, Zane Musgrove or Tyrell Fuimaono. Rd 6 Smashed the Rorts. WHY Unimpressed Barry? didn't you watch the bloody games You obviously don't know how to judge a game of footy. OR you are simply biased against the Rabbitohs You still have a 2014 hangover mate.

I said in the preseason the Rorts were so soft and the Rabbitohs would smash 'em. I also said that Parramatta the Rorts and Cowboys have no chance of making the Top 4. I also said that last season both twins were playing injured and since recovering and having a good preseason with a new coach that has genuine good attacking Ideas and also refuses to flog the players and he uses the 21st Century tactics. Not Sand Hills of the 70s and 80s that the Sharks players did. The Rabbitohs are united as one under a new coach and a semi-structured with a freestyle attacking mode. Our goal-line defence is first class. Very exciting times ahead!

Nat Butcher is no first grader, he was a full season ahead of Cam Murray but the Rabbitohs management kept Cam and allowed Butcher to walk. A fantastic decision by Richo.

@ Ugly Mate I fully agree with you on Hargraves and Napa - both are bludging atm and if they don't aim up CONSISTENTLY, they must go. Don't agree about Friend. He's lacking a bit of confidence atm, but you can't blame his efforts. He'll get back up there soon. Also I reckon Victor Radley (a true blue Easts junior like Ricko) is a better player than Watson. Our bookends are the problem. No wonder NZ don't pick JWH - they can see something which even Trent doesn't. And yes, we need an enforcer in the Luke O'Donnell, Adrian Morley, Bunny Reilly mode.

I could never understand the breathless support the roosters got from pundits pre season. In their recruiting I saw only like for like replacements and zero in the forwards, an area they were lacking last year. Swapping out Cronk for Pearce seemed like such a small incremental gain it wasn’t worth the effort and Tedesco, great player he may be, isn’t likely to fix their problems. Looks like Nick is going to need to dig deep into that sombrero. Might be time for a coaching change too.

Yep you're dead right mate. Cameron Smith being one of the exceptions. I think Cronk even said after last year's GF that he can't recall copping a bad pass from him in his whole career. Geez I reckon he got a rude shock when he came to easts. He's losing valuable decisionmaking time handling less than accurate passes from dummy half and it showed big time last night.

Spot on kk ! So many players struggle to pass the ball accurately one way, let alone both sides. Greg Alexander was the best I have seen at this accurate passing caper, both sides , long or short balls. These days I love watching the passing game from dummy half of Jayden Brailey. Shame his team aren't capitalising on his skills at present.

Yep ! Good point about Surgess ! Whilst he intimidates the opposition, I think he can also intimidate his own fellow forwards, perhaps especially his younger twin brothers trying to emulate him ? I thought the twins, John Sutton & Jason Clark were outstanding last night with the greater responsibility roles. For the Chooks, Mitchell was always dangerous and needs to be given as much early ball as possible, and I think Ryan Matterson is developing well as an edge forward. But not much could be said about the rest of his pack. The halves had an off night without the go forward provided, so they were left only with some individual skills of Mitchell & some Teddy runs ( ala for Tigers 2017) to provide their few opportunities .

That made the Dragons win more impressive against this Bunnies side and the Sharks loss even more woeful last week. So the Saints should spank the Sharks tonight, right? Or will this comp become curiouser?

Cook is a master of running from the ruck, he doesn't do it all the time but, when he takes off he knows were the gaps are but and one thing with Cook, he just pricks his ears up and closes his eyes and very rarely passes the ball. On the other hand, there is also very few Souths players that back him up once he's made a break. Also, Souths dropped the ball also and gave cheap posetion and penalties away. That is one of the problems Souths also have so it evened out. The Roosters just don't look right, Cronk is doing nothing, he's not having much of an impact with the Roosters as he had with the Storm. The Roosters forwards were awful, I know that the Burgess twins are hard runners but, I've never seen them make so much ground down the middle, it looked like they were running against a paper banner defence. Still, the Bunnies are an improving side and there is lots of improvement left in them and last nights score should have really been Souths 44 Rooster 14 max.as Souths did bomb allot of posetion and potential tries.

The change in the Burgess twins from last year to this year has been nothing short of remarkable! Looks like the off-season training with soapy footballs is paying dividends.

Good comments Albo. I was pretty unimpressed at the bunny-ohs at the start of the season but theyre winning me over. Do you think at times they over rely on Surgess...when he's out a few stand up? Mitchell's try was pretty good last night. His strength is amazing.

Same here Albo. The good part about this season to date is that nothing is certain. Hope your Panthers can keep on delivering.

It is incredible how many players are deficient in the art of passing the Steeden consistently to the standard expected at NRL level. Rare is the player who can pass efficiently both L to R and R to L. Witnessing quality ball control is one of the great pleasures the game has to offer.

I hear ya. He needs more touches for sure. Looked so dangerous in space last night. Fingers crossed they're just foxing and come ANZAC day they make a bit of a statement.

I had ruled the Bunnies out of this game once Cam Murray pulled out to join Sam Burgess on the sideline. I never expected the Burgess twins and John Sutton to totally dominate the Chooks pack . While Jason Clark impersonated Cam Murray's role perfectly and Damian Cook was given so much space to run riot from dummy half. With Inglis improving his form every week, and the old spirit seemingly well marshalled by Siebold, the Bunnies cannot be taken lightly this year. The problems with the Rooster's ruck defence , that used to be covered up a fair bit by Pearce & Friend, is now fully exposed with Pearce not being there and with Friend battling with his form. The Roosters still have plenty of attacking potential via Keary, Cronk, Teddy & Latelle Mitchell , but the halves combo didn't click at all last night, and even the bounce of the ball went awry on most occasions. Still coach Robinson has plenty to do around his forwards games if they are to feature come September.
