Giants' Davis slams ex-AFL coach Thomas

By News / Wire

Greater Western Sydney AFL co-captain Phil Davis has blasted former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas for calling the Giants a “bunch of big heads”.

The star defender believes Thomas’ attack on the club was unprofessional and called for him to visit the club.

Davis said the “sensationalist” views reinforced to him that the former player and coach-turned media commentator had a “chip on his shoulder” over the expansion club’s existence.

Thomas hoped the Western Bulldogs would “smack the living bejesus out of GWS” before the 2016 preliminary final and spoke of his frustrations about the Giants’ draft-pick concessions from the AFL.

“If you’re going to do it (put the team down) from outside the club, looking in the whole time, for me it doesn’t hold a lot of weight,” Davis said on his podcast Footy Phil.

“Where I start to get frustrated is when people decide to have opinions and don’t do their due diligence.

“The general public don’t get lots of information and, when you have people doing this, it makes the footballing public less intelligent about football.

“I think he’s (Thomas) completely and utterly wrong. I think if you came up here, you would not see a more selfless, humble group.”

Thomas teed off last week on the Giants on his podcast, co-hosted by Sam Newman and Mike Sheahan.

He fired shots at the club’s culture and coach Leon Cameron and believed they didn’t deserve to win the premiership.

“They are bunch of big heads at the moment who have got an inflated opinion of themselves and I don’t think they are very well coached,” Thomas said.

“The culture is managed to such a level that it doesn’t allow them to play as professionals with humility.

“They are more interested in how they look rather than how they play.”

The Giants sit third on the ladder ahead of their Friday night blockbuster against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

Oh please, it's just words on the internet your lack of social awareness and maturity is demonstrated every time you think interactions on this place are reflective of people's character in the actual world

I actually think Thomas dislikes Geelong far more than GWS and I find the timing of his comments very interesting, why have a go at GWS the week they're playing the Cats? Geelong and Stkilda were both around about the same mark in Thomas's day, with a bit of a rivalry, one went on with their young talent and the other not so much.

i really cannot grasp the strong hatred of the media, i am not a fan of Roos, Zemplias,Roberts and Mark Robinson especially but hate no. They certainly don't worry me at all.

Honestly, why on earth do the media report on anything Thomas tweets? The bloke probably had about five bottles of red when he Tweeted and is forever frustrated he never achieved anything as a player or coach. His comments are archaic and worth about as much as Robert Walls and Sam Newman. Unfortunately, with social media these dinosaurs get air time by making controversial comments. We need to put them in all in a special home for angry, bitter, twisted old relic past players and turn off their internet. Then, they can just complain to their aged care nurses and leave the rest of us alone.

like I said I delight in confounding people. my issue with you is you have the memory of a goldfish. you're all chummy with someone one day then you come back and you're going off at them hence frequent references to terms like senile. i like abusing people's intellectual positions or personalities. it is often revealing about how much substance they have beneath their bluster or prepared statements.

OK i won't enlighten you. Your quote '' people on here always think i am angry '' well this is a rare occasion that you have actually responded to me without anger usually abuse , name calling my inability to do this or that on this site which is true, but do you really think i care. i could go in the backdoor and make you angrier but i won't. i am no angel and do regret some of the things i have said .Despite all this i respect and enjoy a lot of your threads

The media are very good at answering their own questions and creating their own stories. I'll readily admit that I have a strong hatred for the media in our country.

I just find it funny the media still thinks they're worth writing about. It's like these stories exist just for headlines - some old player makes a comment about some current player, there's a little squabble in the media between the two of them and it disappears. No-ones impacted, no-one's hurt, and for fans it has all the emotional connection of watching two elephant seals slap guts for 30 seconds in a bout of masochism through a TV screen on a documentary. What are they expecting to happen? A bunch of old St Kilda fans take up arms to defend their old coach? People on here always seem to think I'm angry. I write provocatively, true - but that doesn't mean my words aren't usually carefully chosen to be provocative, rather than punched out in a frenzy. I love too how you're trying to get an authoritative ruling on whether or not me calling Rob Walls a pig is a "trash call" Can I ask what is the qualifying criteria for something to be a trash call, as opposed to a bad call. What about a rubbish call? A terrible call? Please enlighten me. Actually don't.

D.G-.I am very aware that i irritate you and your running after me but you out of place here. Paul seems to be very irritated by Walls. Quote may 1st @ 1.44 '' i will freely admit to a crass hatred of Rob Walls, the man is a pig '' I am sticking up for Walls i think that was a trash call. Do you agree with his call?

I'll leave the primary right of reply to you for Paul D, but the twists of logic and contradictions in your post jb are pretty amusing. Particularly the bit where you've got a problem with his opinion supposedly having a problem with others having an opinion. You also seemed to have read the level of irritability into Paul's post (perhaps a sign of your own irritation in reading the post?), especially his post was about not caring as to what they had to say and not that they shouldn't say things or what they had to say meant anything to him.
