It’s been a tough year for the AFL’s newest club.

By most estimations they went into 2018 with one of the strongest squads on paper, and yet after eight rounds they find themselves in eleventh position on the ladder, having lost their last three games, each by at least 25 points.

Injuries have had a significant impact, but nevertheless it seems obvious that they are less than the sum of their parts.

But footy is a funny game and things can turn around fast. Just ask their opponents tonight in Essendon, pilloried after four straight losses – the latter against the hapless Blues – only to bounce back by trouncing Geelong last week.

The Bombers looked like a new side against the Cats, winning almost every position on the ground. Four goals to Shaun McKernan, a best-on-ground performance by Cale Hooker and 25 touches to debutant Jordan Ripley epitomised how many individuals found another level.

The challenge of course is to get somewhere near that level every week; so far in 2018 that kind of showing is very much the exception for John Worsfold’s men.

They take in an almost identical lineup, with the only change omission being Dylan Clarke, to allow the return of Andrew McGrath from injury.

The Giants are rather less settled at the moment making four changes. But they’ll be grateful for the return of Josh Kelly, along with Patton, Buckley and Buntine for his first game of the year.

GWS have left out Keefe, Finalyson and Cumming, while Sam Reid misses through injury.

Prediction
The truly sad thing about the Giants right now is that you can’t even call them consistent. They’re just predictably mediocre. My suspicion is whatever happens tonight there’s no renaissance coming in 2018.

They’re still playing just well enough that you could back them against the Essendon side we’ve seen in the opening seven rounds of the year. But not well enough to beat the barnstorming Bombers who buried the Cats last week.

A wise person once told me when in doubt to pick the home team. And if you’re still in doubt, ignore everything that’s happened in the past week and think about who you’d pick then. Both bits of advice have served me well, and both of them tell me to pick the Giants, so that’s what I’m going to do.

GWS by 15 points.

Harsh Truth Harry you might just be right, seems the Bombers far from done with 2018.

Match report Essendon have outlasted the GWS Giants at Spotless Stadium to record their fourth win of the season, and their second in a row. The game started brightly with consecutive goals to Mark Baguley in the opening minutes. Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent in the first term, but the Bombers' superior defensive pressure gave them the early ascendancy. The second quarter continued similarly, with Essendon threatening to kick away as the Giants found scoring difficult. When a long Goddard roost somehow bounced through from almost 65 the margin was out to 22 points. But a lapse in intensity and a few careless errors by the visitors were eagerly seized upon by the Giants. In a burst of dominant footy GWS reeled off three goals to close the margin within a kick. Essendon recovered their composure to maintain their lead, ten points at half time. While it had been a free flowing, entertaining first half, the third quarter by comparison was much more dour and tense. The Giants had the better of the first few minutes, but were frustrated by the Bombers' dogged defending and – frankly – their own mistakes at important moments. Essendon worked their way back into the game but they too couldn't capitalise on their chances. When a scintillating move down the wing by GWS resulted in a goal, the margin at the final change was within a kick and it appeared to be anyone's game. But a moment of madness by Giant defender Adam Tomlinson seemed to swing momentum firmly in the Bombers direction. With neither side able to score a major early in the final term, James Stewart took a mark from a tough scoring position on the half forward flank. But Tomlinson, arriving late, pushed him over out of apparent frustration, and was walked to the goalsquare where the former Giant forward kicked the goal. That incident seemed to deflate the Giants and the Bombers took immediate advantage. They rattled off two more quick goals in as many minutes as GWS struggled to find the ball or any composure. When Mark Baguley marked and goaled to extend the margin to 30 points it was clear the game was over, the man who started the scoring for the Bombers effectively ending the contest. After that, it appeared as though the sting had gone out of the game; GWS had been finding scoring difficult all night. While they managed a brief rally of two goals to at least spark the idea of a comeback, the most notable moments late in the game were an unsporting headbutt by Dylan Buckley that will no doubt be reviewed during the week, and some icing on the cake by the Bombers to push the margin out further. The final deficit of 35 points looks like a comfortable Essendon win, and they were in front all night, but in truth the game was decided in a few minutes early in the final quarter. For the defeated Giants, Steven Coniglio and Heath Shaw can hold their heads high, each playing superb individual games. Hopper, Lobb and Ward were also good, but sadly they had too many passengers. For the Bombers, Zaharakis was at his damaging best, while Heppell and Merrett were good at contests. Baguley and Stringer each kicked three, while Devon Smith reminded his former team of his worth with 13 tackles in a brutally effective display around half forward. This result appears to have very real implications for the rest of the season. While both teams sit on four wins, the Giants ahead by dint of that draw with St Kilda, I think most would agree that right now Essendon look the more likely of the two to push for finals this season. GWS are terribly out of form and confidence, will continue to miss key players over the next few weeks and indeed the season, and can't seem to rely on beating teams either at home or on the road. I suspect we're getting to the end of Leon Cameron's tenure as coach of the club. For the Bombers, while it's a long way back after their shambolic start to 2018, they've strung together two impressive performances and appear to have the weapons to consistently beat good teams. Next week they face Richmond, who haven't been entirely convincing lately, and that would certainly get them up and about if they knocked off the reigning premiers.

GOAL ESSENDON A mighty goal by Jake Stringer as the game ebbs away. The former Dog plays on after a free kick and thumps it through from outside 50. That's three for Stringer. A pretty good backup from a pretty good game last week. GWS 60 Essendon 94

GOAL GWS The man at the centre of the action, Dylan Buckley, gets a goal to the boos of the Essendon fans in the crowd. Still technically a chance for the Giants with 8 minutes to go but I'd bet against them. GWS 59 Essendon 82

Oh dear, I think Goddard might have just pushed Buckley into an umpire. It'll be interesting to see if that comes up during the week. That came after Buckley through his head back into Guelfi, which appeared to be a deliberate headbutt. Buckley will surely get a suspension. I'd suggest one might be appropriate for Goddard as well, but that's much less obvious.

GOAL ESSENDON A good defensive spoil at half forward keeps the ball in the Bombers forward area. Smith gathers and finds Baguley in space at full forward. From about 20m Baguley gets his third. Baguley kicked the opening two goals, and I reckon he's just kicked the sealer with eleven minutes to go. GWS 52 Essendon 82

I don't see how they get another 7 or 8 wins if they can't beat teams like Essendon at home.

GOAL ESSENDON Three in as many minutes for the Bombers. They win another clearance, and Zaharakis manages to find some space on the outside. He runs inside 50, and with a low shot bounces it through for a goal. GWS 52 Essendon 75

Wow, that 50 against Tomlinson. Still a long way to go, but that stupid, destructive act could well have been the decisive moment in this game.

Extremely stupid is right. Deserved to be dragged for that. Bloody selfish.
