VOTE: Wallabies DIY player ratings vs Ireland first Test

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have come out of their first Test of the year with an 18-9 win over World No.2 Ireland. Hooray!

We know the performance was a good one – no doubting that. The Wallabies were underdogs heading into the match yet finished with a comfortable win.

But… exactly how good was it? Maybe we can put some numbers on it by rating the individual players.

And for that reason we’re opening up our DIY Player Ratings to you, Roarers. Have a vote and let us know what you thought of each player’s performance.

If you’ve not done our DIY player ratings before, it’s a simple enough process. Hit up the form below and rate each player from 1 to 10 based on their performance. We’ll keep track of the results and publish our findings tomorrow.

You’re free to rate players as you like with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest – or toss an NA on any player not worth rating – but if you’re looking for a bit more detail than that, our handy little guide might help you make your judgments…

1. Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a squad of such depth.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good.
7. Pretty good, actually.
8. Very good.
9. Excellent.
10. Might as well have been John Eales.

Wind and rain yesterday and again today dammit. Was so proud of that extensive research I did on Pocock and yet I'm congratuled for the whiskies. That's what I love about rugby?

pay golf, 3 large whiskies and watch the rugby. Sounds like a nice afternoon apart from the winds...

Don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

So...just because I played golf this afternoon in a hurricane and had 3 large whiskies and rewatched the test having done this player ratings thingy, I watched Pocock very closely. Just as a taster, during the 2 minute and 17 seconds that Ireland held the ball for 19 phases, phew, Pocock made 3 tackles and attacked 4 separate rucks before finally winning the ball. I give that a 10 on it's own.

I boosted DHP. Error-free, crucial in attack, try-saving hold-up. I dopped Coleman for his three costly, pinged errors - flop, in front of the kicker, man-handling the decoy.

Kerevi was fine. In the midst of the hard stuff, crunching tackles, plus had some good touches. In fact Cully had him as one of 4 Australians (Pocock, Hooper, Beale, Kerevi) in his team of the week, which covered four matches. Ned would not be terrible, in for Tui or Samu, but same 23 looks likely.

When did anyone say we were world beaters?

Kerevi was fine. DHP’s main benefit was under the high ball.

What game were you watching? Genia played ok for someone who's been out for weeks. Both of his try assists were from good vision and the two steps he took actually held up the defense allowing DP to score. You must be a Phipps fan boy.

really? Cheika outchoached Schmidt, selected well and had the right game plan. He didn't go ballistic in the coachs box on doubtful decisions, nor say anything wrong in the interviews after. I get you don't like the guy but at least wait until he does something wrong.

Paul D - Where did I say he was a poor scrummager? I said he wasn't as good as the prop who started who is reputed to be their best thp at scrummaging. Furlong is renowned for his very good general play not his scrum work.

Jeezuz'! The Wallabies win a game and they're immediate World beaters, only 9 points in it wasn't there?

Fair points about Coleman and Rodda, mate. Yes, it was, and with a large degree for improvement too. While there's a few changes I would personally like to see, I also totally understand if the same 23 plays next week. Great feeling as a Wallaby supporter, aye?

Yep that's about how I saw it too, Fionn, maybe Rodda and Coleman both 0.5 higher. Most importantly, it reflects that everyone was at least solid, across the 23, and key positions were good-to-excellent.

16:27 Sunday and still Alan Alaalatoa's name is there. I actually gave Teletubbie Tommie a 5 just for his 18 minutes as he was quite good in the scrum, as always he tackled well and was up quickly to plug any hole in the line. I gave Tongan Thor a 7 on the basis of his 25 minutes of mayhem in scrums and solid tackling. This was pretty good score as most players on the field got a 6 or a 7. What was so good of this WB effort is I couldn't see any starter who got a below 5 score so everyone played well. Building up to the RWC2019 nicely.

It was a good team win, so 7's across the board. Pocock more but BPA less. Someone needs to own up for the linout mess at the start. Not looking to crucify the guy, but I think 5 for his debut is fair. Timu and Hooper perhaps quiet.

777 PooperSam worked out ok. Can anyone confirm Pococks weight? Wallabies site has him at 103 kg 2016 I saw he was 120kg Last night he was listed as 115kg by Foxtel.

Paul, a decent number of Irish fans commenting on Irish sites actually think scrummaging is his weakness, and that he is the weakest scrummaging Irish THP in the squad. No idea how true that is, but it is what a considerable number of the Irish fans say. I'm sure Poth would be able to tell us.

Genia is too slow to pass.... his step-step-pass is becoming an issue. All other aspects were very good. Pocock is the reason for our win. He alone is worth 2 other forwards. Kerevi was too quiet...he should have gone off instead of DHP Beale was dangerous in attack but his defence lowered in last 10 mins, trying to rip ball rather than simply tackling MC still an embarrassment. His players went to more trouble to look clan and respectful. He talks like a Bogan I noticed hopeless Ned in the background....is he a replacement in a couple of weeks. MC boy should be no where near the team.
