Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has slammed former Irish lock Neil Francis for calling David Pocock a “cancer on the game”.
Writing in UK paper The Independent, the player-turned-pundit criticised the Australian flanker after his star performance in the Wallabies’ opening win over Ireland.
“I think David Pocock is a cancer on the game,” wrote Francis, who played 36 Tests between 1987 and 1996.
“Yes, I do have grudging admiration for all his abilities and it is great when you have a player like that in your side …
“He had six legal turnovers and three illegal turnovers and he and his buddy Michael Hooper managed to slow the ball down more than enough to stop any rhythm that Ireland looked like they were beginning to achieve.
“You have to make special preparations to counter Pocock.”
The description of Pocock, who was playing his first Test in 18 months after taking a sabbatical, riled Cheika.
“That guy needs to choose his words better,” Cheika said.
“It’s not a very nice term to use to say … there are people who are really sick out there so I’m not into that.”
Cheika said he himself had been in Francis’ firing line when he was coaching Leinster.
“He used to say a lot of stuff about us when we coached Leinster, some unflattering words he would use for his own publicity.”
Francis courted controversy in 2014 when expressed his belief that gay people had no interest in sport.

I'll lay off pointing out your flaws, if you stop being so anti Australian, and willfully ignoring facts when they are presented to you.

John are you aware that you dont have to read all my cr-p? Just saying...try laying off the personal insults from now on tho please as they do no one any good and they just make you look bad and im sure they dont do your stress levels any good

Sure Fionn...its all me getting upset eh? It kinda looks like it hits a massive nerve with you judging by your comments and the speed at which you have jumped down my throat over my throw away comment. Richie and Ben did not take a year off...they took parts of a year off. Smith took the end of year tour off and Richie took the beginning 10-12 matches of the SR season off if i remember rightly without looking it all up...Im sure you can correct me if I am wrong. Also they had salary deductions to reflect this. Its your SR side that has failed to make the finals because of it so not my concern at all. However at least you do not get all personal and insulting like John does

He didn't want to get the surgery, Jacko. He wanted to play through it. Brumbies were the ones who wanted him to get it. If he was planning on playing through it why would he have gotten the surgery in 2017? It also meant that a good 6-8 weeks (or whatever it was) of his sabbatical would have been spent doing rehab. I wonder why he didn't want to do it? 'Its not that he got paid not to play its that he got paid and did not play' Then what is the issue? Do you have a point? Did you complain so much and get so upset about McCaw's sabbatical? How about Ben Smith's?

You don't see the irony in reacting to something and telling that person to not react? Agreed with the general sentiment though, I just think these guys probably have a history together (beyond what we know as public knowledge already) so I think it probably goes a bit deeper. This line gave me a good chuckle as well: "Now, point your index finger out, bend your elbow so your hand, and finger is pointing directly at yourself" very vivid.

Intelligent comeback there John! Not sure what your point is.....Be specific. Pretty sure I am advocating chilling out and not making such a big deal out of nothing comments.

Geeze, what a beat up! Cheika, mate, you take the bait - every time! Do this for a calming exercise....Stretch your right arm out in front of yourself, wiggle your fingers and then curl your hand into a fist. Now, point your index finger out, bend your elbow so your hand, and finger is pointing directly at yourself. Now repeat these words, “This guy needs to choose his words better,” Sometimes, it's better to not be so reactive, take the positives outta the comments made. (I actually thought Neil was being complimentary - in a clumsy sorta way!) And before we all get antsy about how terrible cancer is, we all know what a terrible disease it is, and no, you are not the only one touched by it. Pretty sure we all have a family member or close friend that has been affected by this horrible disease. Doesn't mean we all have to be so very P.C all of a sudden. What ever happened to the "Laid Back Aussie" attitude? So stop being soooooo reactive, and taking sooooo much offence at nothing comments.

Fionn...Surely its a crap thing to do to your team to get injured in 2016 ...have 2017 off...dont bother getting injury fixed until the Brumbies insist...IN 2018...great team man...perhaps if he had been around the RA he would have got better medical advice and got it sorted way before coming back AGAIN..... if you get paid for 3 and only play 2 its called getting paid while not playing...As TWAS said above....Its not that he got paid not to play its that he got paid and did not play

What are your favourite episodes, Piru? I've narrowed mine down to Last Exit to Springfield, Homer the Great, Lisa's Substitute, Cape Feare and And Maggie Makes Three. I am open to changing though ?. Except Last Exit and Lisa's Substitute. I'm sure of them.

But the RA don't pay him a top up to play for the Brumbies. They pay it to him to play for the Wallabies.

Yeah pretty weird using a pun of native Aus fauna to describe something that "hails from Oamaru".

'Why give teams more motivational triggers than they already have?' No idea... Maybe he is secretly not a fan of Schmidt? Otherwise, I'm quite baffled by it. It isn't like it was a high quality sledge that was likely to impact on Pocock's (and the Wallabies') game. Quite the opposite, I would be willing to bet.
