Suns shine in Sydney

By Andrew Young / Roar Guru

It was an incredible result at the SCG today as the Gold Coast Suns are able to defeat the Sydney Swans for the first time in their history.

After dominating the first quarter, Sydney were held goalless until early in the last term, as the Suns piled on eight unanswered majors.

Gold Coast continued to apply manic pressure forcing a number of turnovers from the Swans for the better part of the match.

Skill errors remained a prominent feature of the match for both teams, but an overwhelming application was what allowed the Suns to run out winners in the end.

Gold Coast’s repeat entries in the last three quarters saw them finish the match with 61 inside 50s to 48, giving the Swans no respite.

Will Brodie and Touk Miller were the major ball winners for the Suns, while Aaron Young and Alex Sexton were the best in front of goal, with three and two respectively.

As for Sydney, they were unable to match it with the Suns for the majority of the match. Their skill execution fell away for large parts of the game and opened the door for the Suns to dominate the game.

This match was really a must win, percentage boosting opportunity, but it turned out to be a real embarrassment, as they were shown up by a vastly inexperienced Gold Coast outfit.

It does not bode well for Sydney, as their run to the finals does not get any easier – they take on Essendon, Collingwood, Melbourne and GWS in the next month.

Despite the result, the Swans can take heart from the performances of Allir Allir (who was crucial again) as well as their skipper JPK and Luke Parker who collected 33 and 29 disposals each.

Small forward Tom Papley was also impressive with another three goals.

Agree with you The Ghost, Swans are one of the worst kicking teams in the comp, our mids are slow Hannas looks done and Jack not much better Rohan hot and cold and Reid always injured if their all fit and well we wouldn't be doing much better, can't see us winning another GF until we get quality players, speed with kicking skills After a flogging by the Hawks in 2014 without a plan B our coaching hasn't improved rolling mauls are still the main focus for winning Reckon Horse should run his last race we keep getting beaten at the post

The umpires rarely influence the outcome of games. Last week we saw North Melbourne get a very clear advantage when playing the Swans, it was lucky the Swans got over the line or there would be a good case for a good whinge. The 2016 Grand Final being a clear exception with one team getting 15 free kicks while the other got 1 over 2 1/2 quarters.

The Swans are overrated, their midfield is pedestrian and poorly skilled. Most of them couldn't hit a barn. Their greatest attribute is causing congestion and forcing the ball forward in a rolling maul style which puts people to sleep. The crowds at the SCG are uninspired as they make little noise to lift their team. Bottom of the 8 for me.

I'm with you two as well. Can't stand the bandwagon types who jump off at the drop of a hat and who speak through their own failures in life. Horse, and his club, are absolute achievers.

Great result for the Sun. I thought they might go alright this year and they had a decent start but not gone well for them since they got back to Carrera. Not sure what it says about the Swans except they shouldn't want a home final. A Doggies path might be their go.

I don't do drugs, and I'm not here to make friends. You should read more comments on The Roar from Swans supporters. It's always the refs fault when they lose.

This is just an excuse. Fresh faces are needed at this club of geriatrics. Longmire needs to be sacked and McVeigh needs to be told his services are nolonger required. This club brought in Buddy and Tipett promising premierships yet they continue to disappoint. Real Sydney people are fed up with the gin swilers that run this club. A loss to the Gold Coast should never be tolerated.

At full strenght the Swans are a top 4 team, with the injury list we have more like 8-10. Not a great display yesterday and cant see 2018 finishing well

It's great to see Brodie finally getting an extended run in the side. It probably means Barlow won't get a look in again this season despite dominating in the magoos again yesterday. For the swans, Alir Alir was fantastic. However, is father time catching up with Buddy? Thomson wore him like a glove.

I did not see the game, but watching the Swans in a couple of recent games this year i thought the midfield was getting tired and slow. Longmire who i think is an excellent coach has done what most coaches do and stick with tried and true players may have to inject youth, enthusiasm and pace through his midfield.

'Of course, the refs didn’t help, but that’s the way things go for Sydney; everyone’s out to get them.' Is that right? I'm unaware of any Swans players/supporters making that claim about yesterday's match. The Swans played poorly. End of story. Can't help noticing how snide and nasty your comments are IAP. Why not try a 'nice' pill before putting fingers to keyboard. It makes you see life from a totally different perspective.

It’s was an in character performance by the Swans. For a while now they’ve been a team that just doesn’t show up on any given day. Having said that, they’re entrenched in the eight and still a chance of top four so let’s not get carried away. At this time of year the better teams are looking ahead and it would be hard to find motivation against the likes of the Suns, Carlton and Freo.

What an incredible win from the Gold Coast Suns. Out of character performances by both sides.
