Hey Wayne, Newcastle regrets you too

By The King of the World / Roar Guru

After being told he was unwelcome from 2019 onwards at Brisbane, Wayne Bennett is on the move again.

Bennett and Anthony Seibold have successfully made a trade for Wayne to come down to Redfern and Anthony to return the favour at Red Hill. However, Wayne has said he still regrets to this day his decision to sign with Newcastle in 2012 and not South Sydney.

Hey Wayne, we regret you too.

I won’t take anything away from him. He built the Broncos from the ground up right from their debut season and in his first run as their coach. He had a 100 per cent track record to get them in the finals. He racked up premierships from six grand final appearances, very impressive.

He then won a grand final in his second year with Dragons in 2010. However, most of that team was built by Nathan Brown. From 2012-2014, Wayne Bennett took over the Newcastle Knights and promised them success.

Sure Nathan Tinkler did hire Wayne for instant success but before Wayne got the job, the Knights weren’t in the best shape. Sadly Wayne made things worse for us on and off the field. He told many juniors to pack up and leave, wrote off Nathan Ross and hired a bunch of has beens looking for a fast buck.

The worst thing for me is he took the team from the community, that’s an absolute dishonour. The only player I can thank him for is Danny Buderus, because he wanted to come back to Newcastle.

When Wayne Bennett left I was absolutely thrilled. Why? Because the Knights could bounce back and undo the damage.

How wrong was I? The history books say it all. In 2015, after a promising start winning our first four of the year, we only won four of the next 20 and got the spoon – the first of three on the trot.

I have got a lot of respect for Rick Stone, he tried his best to rebuild the Knights but sadly, he wasn’t able to get far. After all, he only had a pair of sevens against the royal flush.

In 2016, in comes Nathan Brown. Once again I was absolutely thrilled. Did he make any bogus promises? No. Did he tell us we’ll be an instant success? No. Did he actually think with his big head instead of his little one? Unlike Wayne, absolutely!

When he arrived he immediately laid the platform and said we will get the wooden spoon in 2016. I wished he wasn’t right but sadly he was. In 2016 and 2017, we only won six of 48 games and added another two spoons to the collection.

In 2018 and despite missing the finals, I personally believe it’s the Knights’ best season since Andrew Johns retired. The team gave more to the community then ever and we gave it right back. This may be wishful thinking but I’m calling 2021 to be our year.

I don’t condone the actions of Wayne Bennett, Nathan Tinkler and the previous board one bit. However, it made us supporters stronger than ever and we stood for our team when just about all was lost.

For the Knights, whether the players, staff or supporters, we’re not a community, we’re a family. I do hereby declare myself as the biggest supporter of the Newcastle Knights – but I don’t hold that title alone.

Who else holds it? Every single supporter of the Knights who wears the Knights jersey, bleeds the same colours (some like me have it proudly inked as well) and never gives up.

So now we have the off season for our next step and in 140 days (20 weeks) we have our first match of the season against the Sharks. I’m looking forward to it. Sure the Sharks have a streak against us but all streaks are made to be broken, just ask the Undertaker.

I live in Newcastle, and I can tell you the knights fans welcomed tinkler and Bennett like the messiah. A few of us warned against these ego maniacs , but you reap what you sew.

Let's take the easy path and blame it all on Wayne. The Knights supporters weren't too unhappy when they signed him. I seem to remember there were a lot of people that were upset that Robbie Tew was holding up the process of Tinkler and all his money coming in to set the club up for life, when all he was doing was his due diligence. A few short years later and when Tinkler's money runs out and the coach leaves, it's the coaches fault. And all of a sudden Tew isn't a bad guy and Bennett is. Let's not blame the people running the club who firstly, gave Rick Stone a NRL gig and then realised he wasn't up to it and went after Bennett and then when Bennett left gave Stone the job again. I'm pretty sure Bennett didn't sign up Snowden on his massive contract. Mullen wasn't worth the money they paid him either. Please enlighten me on who the local juniors were that Wayne ignored or didn't resign? Nathan Ross is a fan favourite with Newcastle and rightly so. He was told he wasn't good enough and he still made it. But tell how many clubs are looking at him now the Knights don't want him? His options are looking slim. The truth is Ross was only good enough to play on the wing of a team that won 3 spoons. Now they are looking at being successful, Ross doesn't fit their plans. Code for he isn't good enough for a team that isn't running last. Look the Knights are a proud club and have had great players play for them, but please, let the Wayne ruined us mantra go. It is holding you back. The Cowboys were held back by the 'Refs ruined our season' mantra as well. The season they stopped blaming the refs and actually took ownership of their results they won a premiership. Take ownership of your results Newcastle and you will be successful again.

I can completely understand Newcastle fans being dirty on Bennett but there definitely seems to be a lot of rage directed his way that should directed at Tinkler. Tinkler is infinitely more responsible than Bennett. Signing any coach for “instant success” is always a risky move. You certainly can’t bag the bloke if he’s hired for “instant success” and foregoes the time consuming route of developing local juniors for bringing in hired guns to win a title. If the Knights wanted to build based on their junior base then bringing Bennett in for “instant success” was their mistake. There weren’t too many Knights fans decrying Bennett’s methods in 2013 when in his second season he got them to within a game of the grand final, beating both of the previous seasons grand finalists in the semis. I would challenge any coach to be successful in 2014 with the club going broke, players not getting paid and the McKinnon tragedy. No one could coach a team to success under those conditions. None of that is Bennett’s fault. So the mercenary coach brought in for “instant success” saw out his three year contract and then left. How else was it ever going to end? I’ve gotta say I agree with Emcie around the spin that Brown has put on things. “We will run stone motherless last for three years before we even start to turn things around”. Really? In this day and age it just doesn’t take that long to refresh a roster. Brown has spent three years saying we’ve got to build our juniors, be patient it’s going to take a while. Then he’s signed Ponga, Pearce, Watson, SKD, Heighington, Lillyman, Ese’ese, Moga, Sio, Buhrer, Griffin, Glasby, Ramien, Lee and Lino. He’s sorta saying one thing to buy himself an inordinately long leave pass but then doing the opposite and taking four seasons to do it. The Knights and the Cowboys have always been my “second favourite” teams so I wish the Knights nothing but success but I have to say if a coach came into my club and said “I can rebuild but I’ll need four years, three dire, virtually winless wooden spoon seasons and an open cheque book to get to an 11th place finish” I’m not sure I’d be super stoked regardless of how dirty I was with Bennett.

The Roosters didn’t get the spoon in 2012, that was Parramatta Eels and Roosters were 12th. In 2009, Roosters got the spoon and in 2010 they made the grand final but lost. The only team to win the premiership the year after getting the wooden spoon in history is Western Suburbs Magpies (1932 with the wooden spoon and 1933 with the premiership).

I think the Roosters got the spoon in 12 , and won it all in 13. I expected big things from Browny , but in my opinion he has underperformed. As far as Bennett goes, he was only one of multiple factors.

Are you from the past? "Jail" has been used (and taught in schools) for decades. But I'm really not sure why you'd think an american board game would use "gaol" as the spelling anyway. I mean, I couldn't care less but it's hard to respond with anything actually meaningful when your entire arguement seems to revolve rebutting which keys i hit on the keyboard rather then any of the actual points I've made. I would love to see Bennetts actual quote though. People keep referencing it and it's not like anything Bennetts said has been taken out of context by the media before...

The author of the post that says you have no actual understanding of what happened in Newcastle most certainly did comment on your post and he is right. There are no get out of gaol (note correct spelling) cards but ignorant people like yourself use such comments to justify your ignorance. As one poster said earlier the great Bennett himself said the repair job he caused would be a five year fix so we are still within a year of the forecast. Could you explain "torn apart buy (means to purchase something) cap missmanagement, maybe you meant mismanagement." You make more grammatical mistakes than me mate and I make too many.

Well the author hasn't actually commented on my post, but I'm not sure I get you're point. No one's saying that Tinkler didn't have a massive effect on the club and the area (not entirely sure what Bennett has to do with local businesses not getting paid though) and there's obviously a lot of hurt around Bennetts departure, but how long can you use something that happened four years ago as a get out of jail free card for current performances? The very core of the Bulldogs squad has been torn apart buy cap missmanagement for the last two seasons and in a year they've been heavily affected by it thoughout the season the knights only finished one win better with four years of "recovery" in comparison.

Yep, you're right, I guess salary caps and roster management is an important aspect of the recovery process. What I should have done was include a club that had a similar experience related to cap and roster management issues and how their next season went (like Parramatta in 2013 for example). Ah well, next time

Well there you go, 2014 wasn't that bad after all. And yeah, that's pretty much how it works. Can't remember ever trying to leverage a title I never requested for credibility though so I'm not sure why you're bringing it up

I'm sure Bennett is a good coach but does two grand finals in the last decade and one title put him in a league above Robinson or Hasler for example? The next few years will be telling for a few coaches regarding their legacy.

"I mean even if you’re going to blame Bennett and Co for what happened in 2014 clubs simply don’t take this long to “bounce back”" ?? Do you have anything more than just a passing interest in football ? Salary Cap, Roster management ? Heard of those ? Bennett left Newcastle in a very poor state. The great myth himself said it would take 5 years until Newcastle would be competitive again.

" No one getting paid to actually play for months" ?? that is a myth. Everyone was paid and on time. Boyds 3rd party deals fell through- that has nothing to do with the club. You're a Roar guru ? I dont know how one goes about getting that status but I can only assume if you hang around long enough they hand that status out to everyone. You know nothing of which you talk.

The author is right, you have no idea about Newcastle. The whole community felt the aftermath of the Tinkler era. You have no idea about the local businesses that suffered from not being paid for goods and services thanks to Bennett and Tinkler leaving the club broke. Do you have any idea how long some players waited to be paid? By the way, who is the "Stewart" involved with Parramatta?
