Wallabies DIY player ratings vs Wales: The results

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have lost their first Test of the Spring Tour against Wales in a dour affair, and the results to The Roar‘s crowd voted player ratings are in!

If there was a general trend across the board in voting, then it was the fact that most Wallaby supporters were less than happy with the teams performance.

Only five players had an average score of five or more when the results were compiled, with David Pocock well ahead in the race for the Wallabies best on ground, ahead of Will Genia.

Unfortunately though, there were far too many poor performances across the ground and that’s reflected both on the scoreboard and in these ratings.

The Wallabies take on Italy this coming Sunday in their next match of the 2018 tour.

I would suggest you re-watch any game and just watch Hooper. Than go back and watch the game again and just watch Pocock. Then come back here and make the same statement. I guarantee there is no lazier loose forward in the game than Hooper. He is a stats player. Knows how to rack up the stats but does zero hard work.

I agree that the ratings are harsh. I also think generally we're overrating the Wallabies' players and assuming we're still better than most of our opposition - we have one absolutely world class player - Pocock - and then 2 or 3 thereabouts, but after that i just don't see why we assume we should be winning. It might be worth crediting how tightly and smart Wales played here, similarly to when Argentina beat us

You`ll be Fine Jameswm, as long as the Waratahs fill the Wallabies and Hoops is captain you`ll be fine.

As a 7 he is totally ineffective, as a support and link man for the backs he is effective. What do we want a #7 or an assistant to the backs?

Marlin: If the Kiwis make a great player out of Jack Debreczeni then most roarers thoughts that we have lousy coaches and environments will be proven beyond question.

Beale is and has been in really poor form for the past 18mths. Can’t tackle, runs across field, don’t recall the last break he made. Impact bench player to cover inside backs and 15. At his best he was a really good 15, but I suspect he has lost his speed off the mark now. His rating probably reflects deep fan frustration with his play over the year. HE IS NOT A STARTING 10 or 12 at the moment, really out of form in attack and needs to be hidden in defence.

Yes,Rebel, last time I read the Roar player ratings I promised myself I would not waste my time doing it again.Unfortunately I am a glutton for punishment and read these, which only reinforced my earlier decision.Too much hate.

Actually, as a player he also got knocked on his ass - he lost more collisions than he won in the central piece. And aside from the well-documented and eye-wateringly poor game day strategy, Hooper was responsible for the two failed cleanouts that gifted Tipuric both of his forced turnovers at the ruck and dropped a clean ball cold with the Wallas hot on attack. Always industrious. But how effective? His rating is correct.

Not sure the meters have much relevance as they were mostly gained on the wing - not the hard yards up the centre that make a difference

I'm not saying some players played well but it's obvious that this is just an exercise for people to express state greivances, not a true reflection at all.

These ratings or should I say “raters” are a joke. Wallabies lose by 3 to 3rd best side in the world and captain gets a rating of 1. Sure he stuffed up not taking penalty kicks, but apart from a couple of steals, why does Pocock get an 8? And Kurtley gets a most common 1, yet both he and Genia kicked the ball away in the last minute for no result and Genia gets a 6. You lads need to take a pill. Having said that I would give Cheika et al a 1

As does a most common rating of 1. There are some serious haters out there. He made some very poor decisions in a few circumstances but there is nobody in the country with a bigger engine and very few who give as much.

Hey SM, We understand it's not the greatest thing they weren't published, but things got very busy in that time period for the editorial team and unfortunately, it was a bit of an oversight. It's our intention this won't happen again. Apologies for the inconvenience of not having them published though as we know people enjoy being able to read them.

DNZ (or anyone else), do you reckon that the people at ARU read these forums? Or are they at least alerted to the sentiment on here and other sites? I wonder if the players read it? I do feel sorry for them because I agree if some of our guys played in NZ they would get a lot more out of them

Long time listener first time caller - is it possible to publish the ratings for some of the recent Wallabies games where the Roar didnt publish or provide a view as to why the roar didnt publish ratings?

Left 6 points on the field, easiest 3 anyone would ever turn down. Major factor to us losing the game. Add in the poor direction and leadership 3.5 seems generous. Sure as an individual he stood up... but as a leader he was knocked on his ass.

Hard to justify sticking around for many players while you watch your earning potential decline. Players like Banks and Arnold could make a lot more overseas. If it were my decision, I wouldn't be putting my nest egg at risk while Cheika continues to play lesser talents instead. I doubt Ben Mowen or Joe Tomane regret making the move, and I am sure a lot of other players would enjoy the lifestyle/challenges that come with living overseas. It might just be the sort of thing the big wigs in RA need to notice they're actually frittering away talent.

I didn't watch the game but read Hooper had 16 tackles and 50 odd run metres. 3.5 seems harsh on those numbers.

AB's not losing good players is a myth, it's just that they get replaced fairly seamlessly. Current players that are good enough to get picked for the AB's playing overseas include John Afoa, Charlie Faumuina, Victor Vito, 10. Carter/Slade/Taylor/Cruden/Sopoaga, Malakai Fekitoa, Charles Piutau, Ben Tameifuna, They may not all walk into the team because the replacements have stood up, but that is a hell of a lot of talent playing elsewhere in the world. At 10 is 5 players who would make most other test teams
