Cheika safe for now as RA rule out play for White

By Darren Walton / Wire

Michael Cheika is safe from the axe for now after Rugby Australia’s decision to cancel a scheduled telephone hook-up with former Springboks coach Jake White.

Rugby Australia has resisted Jake White’s offer as a gun for hire and ruled out making a play for South Africa’s World Cup-winning coach to take charge of the Wallabies.

RA boss Raelene Castle had agreed to a telephone hook-up with White following an approach from the former Springboks and Brumbies mentor.

But that hook-up has since been cancelled.

White’s offer is believed to have come after Sunday morning’s season-ending 37-18 loss to England at Twickenham on Sunday, a defeat that prompted further calls for besieged coach Michael Cheika to be axed.

Under Cheika, the Wallabies have lost 11 of their past 15 Tests, including nine this year.

But the governing body has since opted against considering White as a potential replacement to guide Australia through to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Despite growing pressure to remove Cheika, Castle has continually voiced her support for the 2015 world coach of the year.

Before the Wallabies’ underwhelming spring tour of Europe – which yielded a try-less loss to Wales, a lacklustre win over Italy and a record sixth straight defeat to England – Cheika was called in to RA’s head quarters in Sydney to outline his plans for the team through to next year’s World Cup.

He convinced Castle, RA chairman Cameron Clyne and high-performance chief Ben Whitaker that no changes were needed.

But a full season review is now under way, with Castle refusing to guarantee the positions of Cheika’s assistant coaches Stephen Larkham, Nathan Grey, Simon Raiwalui and Mick Byrne.

The board will meet on December 10 when any changes to the Wallabies’ coaching structure will be announced.

Well White was contracted at the time. They renegotiated in 2016, but it was on the back of good performances and little appetite for change, as well as known real available options out there.

Chekko wrote his contract ; tighter than a fish’s bum. We will all have to go down with the Titanic that is RA . It’s all down the Pulver so far but from now on it’s down to Di Castle.

They renegotiated the contract in 2016 though. They also had options in 2014, Jake White was always an option.

Exactly correct, Cheika was literally railroaded into the job with him requesting/demanding the package and Terms he wanted and put to the ARU, and apparently he was given an over the top remuneration package as requested and by him taking the position he put in a proviso that he could choose select players of his choice, which the ARU agreed to, meaning he could choose who he wanted in the Team proper, that let Beale back in after the debacle of that smutty business regarding Links Office Girl or whatever she was! It appears that his packaged remuneration was a very lucrative one because he was at that particular time in a win, win, situation so at a guess the sacking of Cheika it seems prior to the exhausting of his contract right now, would cost Aussie' Rugby big money that they very likely don't have as they will still need to satisfy a new Coach coming in! ~ Interesting

So the guy who publicly came out to the media saying he wants the role doesn't want it to become a media circus?

If he did then it's probably a move to try and push them to act rather than weighing things up properly.

That may well be the case. But maybe he also said "Look, I don't want this to become a media circus" and got cold feet when he saw what was happening. Who knows? Regardless, nobody here can envisage a scenario that exists where this isn't anything other than a total botch.

What if he did? A phone call to another rugby person is hardly news in and of itself - unless it's made out to be sneaky by, say, cancelling it when people found out. Of course the general rugby public would gossip about it, but we'll spend two weeks arguing over where a player was standing when we can all see the video, our opinions are easily discounted.

Are these muppets the same ones running Cricket Australia at the moment??? Seriously, wipe the whole lot of them - starting with both CA and RA boards - and begin again. cheika should have been sent packing ages ago, along with all his wallatahs mates. There is no rugby in Australia anymore, there is no cricket in Australia anymore.

Imagine if you are Jake White or any other coach capable of taking on the WBs at short notice , sitting on the sidelines watching the farcical goings on If it was me I would be hearing circus music and thinking are you kidding me .Dealing with RA would be way to hard no integrity ,who could I trust? next to no back up and by the looks of it can you pay my bills? This episode of the Jake White phone hook up says a lot about the organisation and the people who are running the culture A SHAMBLES !!!

Yeah, something isn't right here. If RA were just worried about appearances, they would have been FAR better off just coming out and saying they are keeping all options available and looking to the future - even post World Cup. It looks FAR worse to just cancel the meeting. If RA were threatened by Cheika then surely they would have told him the same thing - i.e. said "you can't tell us who we can and can't talk to". If Cheika threatened to walk immediately unless they publicly cancelled the meeting, they'd have been better off accepting this outcome than be bullied into cancelling. The only way this seems to make and sense to me is if WHITE said it's off. And that would be an understandable stance for him to take. After all, who'd want to join this farce at the moment? If White said he didn't want to meet any more then MAYBE RA might announce the meeting was cancelled and do this in a way to try to save face a bit? I dunno. Something ain't right.

No need for DOR if White is the HC. It's a call that has to be made with consultation. Remember it comes at a cost of probably close to $1M. Ultimately they want Cheika to walk away, or agree to a reduced pay out, so are required to tread carefully.

Considering that when he was originally appointed he was the only option and when he was re-signed, he was rumored to being chased by Argentina who knows what conditions he was able to negotiate. Ultimately in 2014, they really didn't have too many options other than getting him.

Johnson director of rugby, and White as coach. Why not have both? Answer: RA seems to lack the courage to make this decision, which at this point is not a knee jerk reaction, but entirely logical.

Again, unless RA negotiated the most spectacularly poor contract imaginable (actually very possible, sadly) then I cannot see it ever being heard, and if it was then I would imagine Cheika would pay costs.

I thought Cheika presented his plan at the review prior to the European tour, what is another review going to tell you. Cheika believes in his plan and does not show any signs of being able or wanting to change. There can only be 2 options from this current review. 1. Blah blah blah - we are fully supportive of the plan 2. Dismissal of Cheika and assistants - new plan

Apparently they have already met with Johnson. Fills me with a lot less confidence than the prospect of White.
