NRL Round 5 teams: Injuriy and suspension forces stack of changes

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The NRL has been rocked by injuries and suspension ahead of Round 5, forcing a stack of changes across the competition.

There were already plenty of changes heading into Round 4, and after a series of injuries, it’s going to be a very different landscape again this week.

Out of last weekend, injuries were picked up by Manly fullback Tom Trbojevic, Canterbury front rower Dylan Napa, and Dragons recruit Korbin Sims. The trio will all be out for at least six weeks.

Sharks prop Aaron Woods also broke his foot and will miss a significant chunk of time, while there is still no sign of Greg Inglis.

Elsehwere, both Tevita Pangai Junior and Suliasi Vunivalu have been suspended and will miss some footy for their respective clubs at the Broncos and Storm.

It’s better news, Joseph Tapine is back for the Raiders, while at the Warriors, Issac Luke and Sam Lisone have been named to return after stints on the sideline, although, in the case of Luke, it might still be another week given he is only on the reserves list.

Other players to return are Shaun Johnson, Paul Gallen (both Sharks) and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (Roosters), while Payne Haas and James Roberts are both amongst the reserves for Brisbane.

In an interesting manouver, Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has decided to move Dylan Edwards to the wing in a direct swap with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, who will start at fullback.

I think most astute followers of the game have seen what happens to teams that play negative grinding football against the Storm. Several teams have worried and been successful against them by playing hot potato. They struggle to wrestle when teams are willing to move the ball and especially down their edges. Nothing to lose mentality should be the Cowboys mantra especially this weekend Jimmmy. Get Clifford into first receiver and let him feed it to Morgan and TTM down the edges. Good to see young Tuala get an opportunity but I actually thought Kahu might have been the one replaced. Is anyone in the Cowboys backline playing in their best position?

He just plugs up the middle and at the moment the Broncs have too many wide running show ponies and not enough grunt up the middle to do the little things like win the wrestle, bend the line on the 4th to give the kickers time, take the ugly hit up on your own 10 meter line. Lodge dies it Joe O also a bit but they are one or two shirt in the rotation

I gladly swap McGuire, Bolton and Barba for Flegler and Oats. The more I watch McGuire the more I think of Gallen. Loves to take the ball up and niggle the opposition but slow, dumb and a hog.

Cowboys v Storm could be very ugly. On paper we should be able to match their pack but we are totally under performing in that space. If they control the ruck , we have nothing left to throw at them. Seriously, I don’t care if they win by 50 , I just want the Cows to play some footy. I don’t care if we muck it up , drop the ball , throw intercepts or whatever. That doesn’t matter. But If we play the same style of insipid footy we have played in the last four weeks I will jump out the window. ( luckily we have a ground level house). The Dogs showed how to worry the Storm and to their credit executed it very well. I fear these skills have been beaten out of the Cows so I don’t expect us to execute this as well as the Dogs just to have a go. Is that too much to ask.?

“Injuries and suspension force a stack of changes” Of course, that is unless you are the North Queensland Cowboys – who have a habit of putting out the same names week in week out week out. That tactic seems to be going well for them!

For all the young stock, alternatives are slim in that role. Of the other big young fellas, he's probably the most mobile. I see Fifita filling out more and into a prop role in a few years. I'll be interested to see Pat Carrigan get his shot but I do wonder why Haas hasn't walked back into the team as coach indicated he would?

Brimson still not playing fullback? He killed them when he came on the other day.

Re the Broncos I don’t think Fifita is a middle forward. They are missing Maguire more than they thought.
