Brendon Bolton, it's time to pack your bags

By Michael Thompson / Roar Guru

Brendon Bolton needs to stop with ‘the wins will come’ – they won’t with him as Carlton coach.

On Sunday, the Blues blew an 18-point lead to lose to the Suns by two points and are now the only team that hasn’t won a game in 2019.

Bolton is now 15 wins and 55 losses as coach – grounds to be sacked, as is the fact Carlton are three from their last 36 games.

The honourable thing for Bolton to do is resign and let John Barker coach the rest of the season out.

In 2020, Carlton need to target Paul Roos and Blake Caracella to bring them back from the abyss.

Roos saved Melbourne from oblivion, reinvigorating them over a few years before handing the reins to Simon Goodwin, and Dees supporters are forever indebted to Roos for what he did for the club.

Richmond assistant coach Blake Caracella was a focal point behind the Tigers’ 2017 flag success, and is close friends with Cain Liddle. Caracella is a coach in waiting, and would benefit working under Liddle and Roos to make Carlton competitive again.

The Blues are a good three years behind the rest of the competition, including the Gold Coast, and if we are being realistic they will not win a single game in 2019.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Carlton are in a worse state than 2018, which they don’t want to admit – but they can’t score over 100 points, keep a lead, or score points in that instance.

Brendan Bolton, your time is up. It’s time to do the right thing and begin life outside of the AFL.

How many goals can we expect Bolton to kick because he sure won't be recruited as a coach!

Travis, you don’t get to put out the crap you do and call it your club.

Macca - not sure what is going on with Dow. He is looking very dangerous breaking from the contest but his disposal/decision making with ball in hand has been sub-standard all year Hopefully they can soon work out is it technique or a confused mindset. I’m sure it can be fixed

Jack and Macca I also wondered why Kennedy didn’t play - then I saw he was injured.

Absolutely much more balanced team. You have to admit 4 talls was a diabolical fail. Have not been impressed with gibbons either tbh. Loving setterfield though

I have been thinking a lot about the 4 talls and I think it largely came down to having to play Lobbe as the ruckman with Kreuzer, Phillips & TDK all injured. In 2 games this year Lobbe has taken 2 marks and simply can not be a forward option. This means that if we were to ruck McKay the forward line suddenly looks pretty small. I also think playing Lobbe caused some of our issues with Gibbons ending as the deep option going inside 50 as our talls had to push higher to create the option coming out of defence that should have been the ruckmans job. Hopefully with Kreuzer coming in this should be rectified. I would think we go Lobbe, Casboult & Setterfield (susp) out for Jack, Kennedy & Kreuzer. Makes us bat a lot deeper in the middle, especially around the stoppage, and look at little more dynamic up forward.

Well said. The thing that gets me is if McGovern stood just 1m further back and marked that quick kick, the blues win and none of this nonsense is written. The line between complete disaster and being on track isn't that fine. I would love to see what all these sack em all types have to say if the blues go on to win the next 3.

Unfortunately Timbo, we need a lot more than that ! I'd take Bolton for Pyke instead.

Yeah! Sack 'em all! Then replace them and then sack that lot too! And if that doesn't work, then go and get the best and most experienced and expensive people and give them 12 months to turn the ship around! Madness. The emotive irrationality on display is the worst approach to management. And for those screeching that Carlton needs to be shaken up, this is exactly what has happened for the past 3 years. Huge list changes and off field also. We now have a good list to move forward with and grow together as a team. But don't let this stop the screeching and baying for blood.

I can see Carlton maybe winning four this year, they are the worst team in the league but Hawthorne, Fremantle, St.Kilda, Gold Coast, North & the Bulldogs are winnable games & maybe ad an upset against a top team. Bolton will hang on to the end of the season then get replaced with someone who knows what he is doing.

Oh, here comes the Paul Roos myth again. What did he do for Melbourne? When he was coach they were the same old Melbourne as always—in fact, they lost to Essendon when the bulk of Essendon’s players were out suspended. Otherwise, they had typical Melbourne losses, promising with a sterling win, then dropping games they shouldn’t have. Roos is a solid coach, but he’s nowhere near this messiah figure people think. He introduced a stodgy gameplan to the Swans that most people rated unwatchable and won one flag. Wow. If Melbourne improved, it’s because a ton of players (and lots of top 10 draft selections) got games pumped into them. Nature does the rest. How far Melbourne has improved is yet to be seen. And I don’t understand why senior coaches now need to serve a further apprenticeship under a senior coach. If Caracella is a ‘coach in waiting’ then give him the job outright. Did the likes of Alistair Clarkson and Adam Simpson and Damien Hardwick serve as heir apparents? Carlton had to turn over the entire list, and have had a wretched run with injury. They’ll get there. Right now, though, Alistair Clarkson wouldn’t be faring much better with them.

I wouldn’t be to concerned, look at Brisbane, once the wheel starts turning for Carlton and confidence grows the results will come. Even if we finish last this year and hand Adelaide pick 1, it’s where Adelaide finish is important. If Adelaide finish 13th or below it’s a win for Carlton any Top 5 pick is of the same value when you look back on history. If you don’t win the premiership it’s best to finish in the bottom 5 and top up on talent.

This arricle is very dramatic and I think with out young guns we will make ground next year. I also hate our history of sacking coaches however , Bolton should not now get a free run. We have been getting over run in games and he goes for 4 talks wtf was he thinking . Casbolt was worst of field, this is not list management it’s selection disaster. Kennedy got 30 of possessions in the twos plus 29 last time he played for blues. That one change and we proabaly won by 20. It may be time to look at a new coach however I think the list although raw and young looks pretty gun to me

You state that 'the club’s list was a travesty at the end of 2015'. I'm not going to argue with you, but it raises the question of how did Carlton get it so wrong. Since 2005 they have had 5 #1 draft picks; no-one else comes close. They have also had an additional 7 top 10 picks; only the expansion clubs can beat this. So why are they so bad? As a comparison, the last two Premiers haven't had a #1 pick in that time, and only 4 (WC) and 6 (Ric) top 10 picks.

I turned on Pyke last Saturday. I get it, but please, please keep Bolton and keep losing. I would love for the Crows to get the first draft pick this year.

Actually I was talking about the old University team that used to exist in the VFL from 1908 to 1914. From 1911 to 1914 they lost 51 games in a row. They had 27 wins from 126 games. Your interpretations are apt too.
