Highlanders cruise past Blues in NZ derby

By ZSport / Roar Pro

The Highlanders have broken a five-game losing streak by defeating the Auckland Blues 24-12 in the New Zealand derby.

Under the roof in Dunedin the Blues made one change for the clash, with Sione Mafileo beginning in the starting line-up and Ofa Tu’ungafasi assuming his place on the bench. The Highlanders brought Jackson Hemopo back into the starting line-up and co-captain Luke Whitelock came onto the bench. James Parsons started at hooker for the Auckland side, his 100th match in Super Rugby.

Both sides struggled for momentum in the opening encounters, with five penalties and a knock-on occurring inside the first 20 minutes. Much of the first quarter was played between each side’s 22 and neither side could mount a meaningful offensive.

Enter Ma’a Nonu. The 103 Test All Black sold a dummy and burst through the Highlanders defensive line. He made his way past the 22 before unleashing a pass to young flanker Tom Robinson, who slid in on the left-hand touchline. Otere Black was unable to add the extras, but the deadlock had been broken.

Just two minutes later, though, with the Blues camped inside their own half, scrum half Jonathan Ruru failed to hear referee Mike Fraser’s call that the ball was out of the ruck and as a consequence a Highlanders defender latched onto him. Ruru could only manage to slice the ball back into his in-goal, where, fortunately for the Blues, Caleb Clark beat two Highlanders players to ground the ball.

A five-metre scrum ensued and the Highlanders were determined to score some points of their own. The ball spilled out of a ruck and Shannon Frizell had quick enough reactions to pick it up and jump over the chalk to hand his side their first try of the night. Josh Ioane’s conversion gave the hosts a two-point lead with just over ten minutes until half-time.

With just over a minute left in the half, the Blues were hot on attack five metres from the Highlanders’ line. A rushed past from Ruru allowed Sio Tomkinson to pounce with an intercept. He was cut down by Melani Nanai, but not after running 50 metres downfield and getting his side out of trouble. And so the Highlanders went into the break up by 7-5.

The first ten minutes of the second half began much like the first. But the Highlanders were persistent and found themselves with a five-metre scrum after being held up over the line as adjudicated by referee Fraser with help from the television match official. After a few resets the Highlanders pack put a big shove on the Blues scrum, and when the Blues illegally stopped the Highlanders scoring from the back of the scrum the referee ran under the sticks and awarded a penalty try.

The momentum had shifted dramatically and the Highlanders looked to build. The Blues went about trying to close the now nine-point deficit, but they couldn’t chase down the elusive Matt Faddes. The right winger managed to rake in replacement scrum half Sam Nock’s pass and had a free run to the line right in front of ‘The Zoo’. Ioane’s kicking had been faultless all night, and he stretched the Highlanders lead to 16 in the 58th minute.

Ioane’s perfect night continued as he knocked over a penalty goal after Ofa Tu’ungafasi was pinged by the referee for not rolling away. Since half-time the Blues had struggled to get into the game due to the rock-solid Highlanders defence.

They eventually scored a late consolation try in the final minutes. Sam Nock scooted down the left-hand touchline before being taken high by Tevita Li. The Blues took a quick tap and Melani Nanai collected a cross-field kick to stroll in for the try. Harry Plummer converted the try, but it was too late for the Blues. The Highlanders secured a drought-breaking 24-12 victory.

It was a great all-round performance by the Highlanders, which gives them their first win in nearly two months. They travel to Tokyo next week for a clash against a Sunwolves side that continues to improve.

The Blues struggled to gain any momentum in the second half, managing only a late consolation try after the break. They have the bye next week before travelling to Canberra to take on the Brumbies.

Yea, what the hack happened to him in the whole match? He didn't make any impact like he used to. Dude was literally M.i.a

Poor old Blues, couldn't take a trick in the second half, ref, Paul Williams, with his offsiders didn't help at all either. The game really swung after that penalty try. But the ruck before that scrum, the Blues should have been awarded a penalty prior to that for a double movement by the Landers in the held up situation. Geez, they even went up to the TMO for the potential try & it was clear as day the Landers forward had 2nd dibs at the line. The other shocker was Faddes intercept try, it looked like he was at least 2 foot offside at that ruck. Yet again home sides getting the rub of the green from the officials.

Your 100% correct about the Highlanders loose-forward trio of Frizell, Dixon and Lentjes. They are quality. To keep a player like Akira out of the game is a special effort. The quality of the game compared to the others was noticeable. The handling skills were much cleaner and after the Blues scored the first try, the match really opened up. For me, I really like the look of Josh Ioane. His kicking style reminds me of Sopoaga and he seems to be very calm under pressure. The more he plays with guys like Aaron Smith, he will continue to improve and could be one to watch in the future.

Geez Istanbul, It would be a fool to dismiss, this current team, that the Blues have at hand. Try looking at the NZ conference, as there is really sfa, between all the teams outside the Saders. Cheers.

well, being the best of the games on show, so far this weekend, the quality, of the game, really stood out, as you might have noticed Zanden?. Even without many of the top players still unavailable, mainly though injury, the Landers, just showed what depth & emerging talent they have at hand. Hammington's game has been showing improvement every time he starts, but it was so noticeable that he has still the yards to do, to be of the quality, of Aaron Smith. Geeez he is real class, & apart from his brush off from the still improving Ma'a, he did play well. So noticeable, was how the Landers loosies, & forwards in all, shut down the impressive Akira. He will learn from that game, if he still wants his star, to continue to rise. In mentioning Ma'a, I do IMO, reckon, barring injury, he will be there with Shag, come September, as he would be a valuable asset to the squad, in more than one way or another.

Copy and paste this for the past 10 seasons. “The missing link does seem to be the halves, they certainly have the pack and the back line to perform.”

Would have been a long time since Akira Ioane registered zero run metres. Highlander loose forwards were immense -

The Blues seem to make chances, but can’t convert. I was pointing this out to my wife when they had a 5m scrum. I told her they would blow this in a second without scoring... and then they fumble in the first phase and lose possession and the the Landers counter attack 60m up field. It was one of more better prophetic moments. To take 20mins of dominance to get one try, then to let the Landers straight in with their own (converted) to give them the lead, must be so frustration for Leon MacDonald. The missing link does seem to be the halves, they certainly have the pack and the back line to perform. A good example is when Ruru has the ball at a ruck, ref clearly calls it’s out as there was no one even pretending to stand over it, just people blocking over to the side. Instead of picking it up and clearing, he hesitated, got rushed and lost possession. That’s not to say they were completely bad, but it feels like if they had a good combination there they could be that much better as a whole unit.

well as long as the blues continue to play second rate halves they will never amount to much , This has been there big problem for 10 years . The replacement halves that came on in the 2nd half cost them the game , it s that simple . The blues forward pack is the equal of any in the competition ,
