My guilty pleasure: Seeing the Houston Rockets lose, again

By aussierad / Roar Rookie

It didn’t take long for the jokes and memes to come after the Rockets fell to the Warriors to lose the semi-final series.

For the fourth time Golden State crushed the dreams of Houston fans. In the immediate tragic aftermath Tilman Fertitta, who paid $2.2 billion to buy the franchise from Leslie Alexander, defiantly guaranteed that James Harden will lead his franchise to championships. Yikes – if I were Paige, his wife, I would be having a little conversation about promises that may prove difficult to keep.

James Harden, a supremely talented offensive player in the regular season, invariably disappears or chokes in the play-offs. Why that happens is somewhat unclear. Perhaps in the spotlight of the play-offs referees actually want to look like professionals and so don’t allow The Beard his usual leeway, such as his patented double step-back, also known as a travel in the NBA rulebook.

It was comical when Harden asked for sympathy and a fair go from the referees after Game 1 of this series, seemingly upset his Oscar-worthy attempt to bait the ref into giving him a foul against Draymond Green didn’t work. This is Harden, who has made his way into the free-throw line more than any other NBA player dead or alive since 2012, wanting a fair go from the referees.

And talking about disappointing, Chris Paul is right up there with James Harden. If the Warriors have the Splash Brothers, the Flop Brothers is an apt description for this pair, arguably the most frustrating duo to watch in the NBA. Paul’s efforts in Game 6, attempting to sell two flops within seconds, was hysterical.

Last year Clutch City fans claimed the Rockets lost – rather than the Warriors won – because Chris Paul tore his hamstring. As Daryl Morey famously said, they were one hamstring away from being 2018 champions.

In 2019 the Warriors conceded a quadriceps (Demarcus Cousins) and a calf muscle (Kevin Durant) and they still could not finish the job. In Game 6 this series, the Warriors emptied their bench and a couple of guys with names I’ve never heard off kept the team in the game, scoring 33 points with Kevin Durant out. Has anyone heard of Quinn Cook, who played 16 minutes?

Once again, a massive choke from seemingly misnamed Clutch City.

The response from the Rockets after a loss against in the play-offs is always entertaining, and this year was no different. Just like Game 7 last year, James Harden walked away from the court without shaking hands with his opponents, and of course there was all the usual bravado. Fertitta said, “We’re going to learn from it, and we’re going to come back next year, and we’re going to kick their ass at some point. I can promise you that”.

Fertitta, whose parents came from Sicily, where scary men wear dark suits, boasted, “I’m a fighter, that’s my culture, and I think the longer that I own this team, they’re going to pick up more of my culture.

“We had [the Warriors]. We should have stepped on their throat the other night and cut their throat. It’s not, ‘Let’s make a few shots and win’. It’s, ‘Step on their throat and let’s take it back to Houston and end it in six’.

“We’ll pick up a few Tilman-isms along the way in the next few years.”

Harden added: “I know exactly what we need to do. We’ll figure it out this summer”. Though he declined to elaborate on exactly how he was going to do that.

So there you have it, folks. The recurring Rockets versus Warriors finals is the gift that keeps giving, and like most NBA fans around the world, we just cannot help but take a little guilty pleasure in the inevitable outcome.

I was thinking of you when the Raptors fnished off the Bucks. Better luck next time! Nobody expected FVV to suddenly remember he is a NBA player.

I think Harden has improved and his states are good, but this year, just like previous years, he made a few key errors in the playoffs. For eg in the last game against the warriors, Curry nailed a three to have the warriors ahead at 107-102 with 1:28 minutes left, Harden collected the ball and made a disastrous turnover when the ball was intercepted. That was essentially the end of their campaign. Chris Paul was the better player in the last game.

Rockets don't have any more money to get a marquee player. The good news is the Warriors will lose at least one, probably two of their best players. KD will be silly to leave the Warriors, but I sense he seems to be the odd one out as he wasn't drafted to the warriors like Steph, Klay, Draymond and he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder wanting to prove he can do take another team to the promised land. Klay will probably stay. Boogie would have be a sure bet to leave but with his latest injury, he may not get the offer that he wants and decide to hang around. With the Warriors probably weaker next year, Rockets still have a chance, but I agree they are not getting any better.

The biggest question is do the Rockets break up? I think their championship window has shut, last year was their biggest opportunity, this year was a bit tougher, but still not (on paper) outside of their reach - obviously it was. Another year with the same roster, for the same result? Does the front office want that? Do players want that?

I'm no fan of the Rockets whinging (and it actually cost them dearly in this series), and I'm happy for you to dislike Houston, but.... Harden didn't "disappear or choke"...he averaged 31ppg, 6apg and 7rpg. He was pretty incredible during these playoffs. And Houston didn't "once again, massive(ly) choked"...The Warriors are one of the best teams in NBA history. If Houston had won last year or this year, it would have been a major accomplishment. Even without Durant and Cousins, the Warriors had 3 of the best 4 players on the court, so again, this won says more about GS than Houston, I think.

I am biased as I am a Bucks fan - however if the regular season is any guide the Bucks should come through. I just can't see Kawhi being able to carry the Raptors to 4 wins against the Bucks, as the defence will be better and Toronto will need to score more than 105-110 to beat Milwaukee. Not sure who scores the remaining points for the Raptors.

To be fair to the Beard, he has been getting better over the years. Agree about the Splash brothers - I think KD will leave - curry and china klay will make a comeback. Can't wait for the game against Dame and the blazers, and curry vs curry!

I don't really buy that harden chokes in play-off. There's an excellent article on the ringer that goes into depth on the strengths and flaws of the way the rockets have been built, but essentially they have no scoring or screening prowess in the front court, which exposes them again elite teams like the warriors with athletic switching defenders (capella being a non-entity in this series). On a different note, I love seeing the splash brothers rise again without Durant - media was under-valuing Currys greatness, but it's because he is team oriented and defers to durant

Always have a little enjoyment seeing Harden lose too, although he's an amazing player - deservedly in the MVP conversation. That step back three is insane as a move. The flopping & carry on is playing the ref, which I respect although dislike. I just can't enjoy Houston winning. The real enjoyment for me so far has been to see all the Boston hot takes and supporters have to swallow all the crap they put out after game 1 of the Bucks v Celtics series. The NBA media has so many Boston fans that poo-poo every other teams chances, and over hype their own expectations, that this series victory has been immensely enjoyable and satisfying. It's been staggering the narrative even after the win - it was all Boston/Kyrie/add Celtic here playing awfully, then on to the other series. Screw Boston, and go the Bucks!

"It's like he's got the plague, and you don't want to touch him. That's how we've got to treat him." This quote courtesy of Popovich to describe Harden's ability to draw a foul. I have to give him credit for his witch-craft, but indulge in a little schadenfreude at his reaction when the ref doesn't fall for it.

Aussie I liked the flop brothers. The video of Harden shooting normally and shooting into a defender was illuminating.

There is a video of Steph in the tunnel with Draymond, with CP3 walking behind them...hilarious! Steph: “Kick me off the court again, boy!” And Green replied to Curry’s taunt by screaming, “Kick him off! Kick him off!”

Chris Paul apparently kicked Steph Curry off the court before the last game, and Chef Curry's reaction at the end of the game was amazing! No need to feel guilty, everyone except Clutch fans enjoy it!
