Beattie doubles down on NRL's Folau exclusion

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Despite a renewed plea from Israel Folau to make a return to the NRL, chairman Peter Beattie has all but slammed the door shut, saying that the NRL’s position hasn’t changed.

Folau was recently found guilty of committing a high-level breach of contract with Rugby Australia for a social media post in May, which saw his $5-million deal over four years torn up, and the former backline star banished from the sport in the country.

While it’s thought Folau might have been able to stay in the sport by moving overseas, his chances of ever representing the Wallabies again appear dashed after the three-day hearing which found him guilty.

Folau, who began his professional sporting career in the NRL before jumping to the AFL and then rugby union, reportedly made a plea to the NRL to take him back, despite Beattie previously saying it wouldn’t be allowed to happen.

The Daily Telegraph reports Folau was prepared to give the NRL complete control over any future social media posts in a bid to return to the code.

However, Beattie told The Australian that the NRL’s position was unchanged despite the supposed offer.

“Our position on Israel Folau remains the same,” Beattie said.

“We are an inclusive game with a respect for all. Israel has social media posts online that go against what our game stands for. As it stands, he will not be considered for registration.

“What Israel chooses to do in relation to his social media posts and his faith is a matter for him.”

Folau last played in the NRL during the 2010 season, when he finished up a stint with the Brisbane Broncos, after starting his career at the Melbourne Storm.

I watch many of the BEST NRL players with a history of domestic violence drinking problems and depression which seems to be wide spread but Mr Beatie does not want Israel Folau in the NRL. This man a real clean skin? Mr Beatie please explain to me why? I played both codes but I swear I will never support either code ever again. There is no lace in sport on in decent society for your leftist ideologies.

You are allowed to believe the bible from which falou is quoting but you are not permitted to express your views which may offend someone who may be offended according to the NRL. NRL is full of crap fortunately the game is still enjoyable(sometimes) .I dont agree with Falou but an adamant that he has a right to express his opinion without being deprived of his employment. NRL management are pretty gutless and can be leant on by corporate supporters

John RA should have made a statement saying they did not hold the same views as IF and that these views do not reflect the views of our organisation......Just the same as the NRL came out and said they did not agree with the few who chose not to sing the anthem because they did not believe it represented them........As for the Dude bit....do your own research

If Folau's treatment is found to be illegal by the courts as is expected, how can the NRL legally exclude him, given they have already used the same justification as Rugby Australia?

Lol...the irony of you accusing someone of a lower intellect than yours. You do realise you've used a label against Qantas and Joyce because of an inability to argue the point? The dangers of cousins procreating are the births of people like you.
