Super Rugby Round 17 teams: Rebels roll the dice with new halves and seven changes for Crusaders

By The Roar / Editor

Melbourne have made a host of changes ahead of their huge clash with the Crusaders on Saturday night, pairing Michael Ruru and Matt To’omua in the halves for the first this season.

The Rebels have been dealt a blow though, with Will Genia sitting out the clash with the ladder leaders under the rest policy, while Marika Koroibete and Quade Cooper have also been moved to the bench.

Sam Talakai, Angus Cottrell, Tom English and Billy Beakes headline the inclusions in the run-on XV.

The Reds have swapped Wallabies players in accordance with Rugby Australia’s workload management policy, welcoming Izack Rodda back at the expense of Lukhan Salakaia-Loto. That’s one of three changes to Brad Thorn’s side, with last week’s Scott Malolua being handed the starting scrumhalf role and Alex Mafi starting at hooker.

Elsewhere, the Highlanders will be buoyed by the return of Liam Squire (his first match of the season) against the Bulls, although Daniel Lienert-Brown will miss with injury. The Bulls will welcome back captain Handre Pollard from injury too.

True. Might be a fairer comparison if he had Genia on his inside. Still it's a great opportunity for Toomua. Also excited to see Ruru get a full run at 9.

The then ARU enforced a moritorium in the Rebels to specifically stop that. One could argue that the moritorium actually hampered the Rebels from the outset. The date that was lifted was moved forward after RUPA argued it was a restraint of trade.

Here is the chance for all you Roarers to see if Toomua is a realistic option at 10 for the Wallabies as some of you suggest. I do not think he is a 10 at all but no doubt this game against the Crusaders will show us all.

How many wasted millions on the Rebels for no results except for decimating the qld reds. REBELS GONE. Q.c was meant to save them.

He'll probably have a drink or 3 to celebrate. Seriously, he's completed his programs, counselling etc, been remorseful blah blah. Let him play for the Tahs (just keep him out of green and gold)

It probably won't be raining in Christchurch for the game but it will be cold and will likely have rained earlier in the day.

Depends if RA say he cannot play or not. He plead guilty in court and is now awaiting sentencing on the 14th of June. Tahs have said that his team suspension of two matches for not telling them about being charged by the police is complete but that they will comply with any additional sanction from RA.

Glad the Rebels have gone back to Meakes at 12. Also glad Uelese is back to starting hooker. Koroibete unlucky not to start, but English has been combining well with Meakes all season. Ruru will go alright, not out and out brilliant but reliable.
