Why Perth Glory was right to sell Jason Davidson

By Chen Yang / Roar Pro

And just like that, Jason Davidson is gone. A key cog in the purple machine has now been sold off to K1 Giants Ulsan Hyundai, the bane of Australian teams in seasons past.

A substantial transfer fee is all that remains of the jet-heeled fullback.

Yet, despite all that, Perth should be commended for their decision. Football history is littered with examples of unhappy players poisoning the dressing room. No player is bigger than the team, and it is much better to sell on a player for a considerable fee than lose him on a free after a couple of low effort seasons.

To be sure, there are critics of this policy. No ambition, they claim. Small club mentality, they complain.

How can we sell one of our best players?

As far as I am concerned, that kind of talk is utter and complete garbage.

Such a short-sighted policy might reap short-term benefits but would be detrimental for a club’s long-term future.

Think about it. Which quality player would be willing to come to the a league knowing that they would be tied down and shackled as soon as they arrive? They would be stuck at the club, unable to move on to pastures new.

This is not how modern football works and it is not how modern footballers think.

It is much better to have a flexible policy that would encourage quality players to come to the league where they would be secure in the knowledge that they would be able to move on when circumstances call for it.

These players would also spread the good reputation of the a league to their compatriots, allowing the recruitment of a higher class of players.

So well done, Glory, for selling Davidson. All the best to Jason – enjoy your Korean sojourn!

I think Berisha did have 1 more year to go, but MVFC were happy to let him go because he was no longer required. If he stayed, that's probably $750k wage that MVFC would have had to pay for a player who would not be in the Starting XI. It's a contract. If both parties agree to tear up a contract, then the contract gets torn up & both parties walk away. Mutual Termination of contract happens a lot in football, particularly in ALeague.

you make a fair point, mark, but i dont think that a league players are disadvanteged due to their lack of marketability. Very few players outside the top tier, such as neymar( a prick but a big social media presence), ronaldo and messi have that kind of draw. Look at jefferson savarino from the mls, whose being chased by west ham for 6 mil or thereabouts. Hes a virtual unknown outside of us football circles, yet costs 6 times as much as the avg a league transfer. Is he really 6 times better than, for instance, iknomomidis? (They play in similar roles)

Much of the discussion about overpaying and underpaying is said with the benefit of hindsight when risk at time of purchase has become known facts. Sometimes a player bought for little will turn out to be a gem, so it is easy to look back and say the buying club underpaid. The circumstances of the selling and buying club can also be a factor (desperate sellers/desperate buyers). We get low fees because our players are high risk, and there is a very limited market for buying them. Sure, in some cases the local club also needs the cash from the sale, but I don’t think A-League clubs are consistently getting below market value because they’re all desperate sellers.

No. Buyout Clauses are intentionally set low by Player Agents who don't want their client to be ignored by high Transfer Fees, which a club might demand. Mitch Langerak didn't have a Buyout Clause in his MVFC contract & his move to Germany was jeopardised by lack of Buyout Clause. Milligan's move to Crystal Palace was stymied because Palace refused to pay MVFC the Transfer Fee it asked. So, Agents now have started insisting on low Buyout Clauses for their players. It's also a reason why Davidson was able to be lured back to ALeague. He comes to Australia for a lower wage than he might get overseas, to restart his career but with a Low Buyout Clause in the contract.

Market values and wages are reactive in nature. By this logic, there would be no bargains in the trasnfermarkt. It would be an easy task. Look at MValue, buy player. Unfortunately its more complicated then that, thus the terms over and underpaying. Also pls dont insult those whose opnions you dont agree woth yeah nemesis? U were a little harsh on mark there:)

Seriously, do you even read posts before spewing your nonsense? Buyout clauses in the A-League are low because our players have little value in the transfer market, for the reasons I described.

Utter nonsense. Most A-League contracts have a Buy Out Clause which are set very low to allow a player to move for a low fee. A pity, but these contracts also generally include "On Sell Clause", which gives the ALeague club a percentage of all future Transfer Fees for that player. So, CCM will keep getting a Percentage of the Transfer Fee for Maty Ryan; Melbourne City for Aaron Mooy; MVFC for Mitch Langerak, etc. If you want an accurate estimate of the Market Value of a player, then the wage he earns when moving from ALeague is a good guide. Topor Stanley went from WSW to Hatta Club (UAE) & his wage was: A$1.2M per year. Thwaite went from Perth Glory to Liaoning Whoin (China) & his wage was: A$1.25M per year. Milligan went from MVFC to Baniyas (UAE) & his wage was: A$2.1M per year Spiranovic went from WSW to Huangzhou (China) & his wage was: A$5M per year These are the market values of players, moving straight from ALeague to foreign clubs.

I don’t agree at all that A-League players are undervalued in the transfer market. It’s easy to look at the transfer fees paid in Europe and what we get for A-League players and think it’s not fair, but what we get reflects commercial realities. Like any other asset, the price of A-League players in the transfer market is based on what others are willing to pay, rate of return and risk. A-League players offer marginal commercial value and a high risk of mediocre on-field return. That doesn’t create substantial demand for them, so clubs interested in buying them will start the bidding at rock bottom. The best chance for A-League clubs to get substantial transfer fees from selling players overseas is through sell-on clauses.

I remember when the Mariners sold Jedinak for it was reported at the time for $1.something with a % of any ongoing fee. The mariners traded in the black for that year only because of that fee. Good decision glory, the money can used for so much. But agree a-league clubs don't get enough money for some of our transfers.

That shows you why you shouldn;t pay attention to these awards. Only Krishna would make the top five in my book, and Davidson would be one of them as well. Goodwin I would put in the top 10, though he has a tendency to slack off, and he mainly started and ended the season well, without Kurz I feel he will go back to his old ways like he did against the Socceroos.

How do you know Davidson was unhappy? Glory now have only 1 full back as Neville has left.

Look at the voting in the Johnny Warren Medal. Roy Krishna (Wellington Phoenix - 31 points) Isaias Sanchez (Adelaide United – 29 points) Neil Kilkenny (Perth Glory – 29 points) Diego Castro (Perth Glory – 28 points) Keisuke Honda (Melbourne Victory – 28 points) Not only are they the best players in the league, all but Krishna are older than Isaias, suggesting he has plenty in the tank.

For sure. As a measure of the a leagues quality, a top a league keeper (danny vukovic a couple of seasons back) could work his way into a championship winning european team and pick up the fans player of the yr award to go along. The a league has aome seriously good players thatre massively underrated

Over 50% of A-League players are on one year contracts. Anyone in that situation, leaves for free.

By the way, did berisha leave on a free last season? Some say there was a 1.3 mil fee but others say it was a free?
