Where did it all go wrong for Queensland in Game 2?

By The Roar / Editor

After heading into last night’s State of Origin Game 2 feeling very confident of wrapping up a series victory, the Maroons now head back to the drawing board after suffering one of their worst ever Origin defeats.

The 38-6 shellacking at Perth’s Optus Stadium has seen all the goodwill and confidence generated by Game 1’s upset victory evaporate almost instantly. Now, Queensland enter the all-important Game 3 – in Sydney, no less – as massive underdogs, needing a monumental shift in momentum to take back the shield.

But where exactly did it go wrong for the Maroons?

Did Kevin Walters miss a trick from Game 1? Were they just outfoxed by Brad Fittler, Mad Genius? Was it really a case of poor attitude and discipline?

We were joined by Roar editor and NRL expert Scott Pryde on the Game of Codes podcast to dissect just how everything went pear shaped for the Maroons – and whether they can turn it around in Game 3.

Yep, gotta say I agree with this analysis. One thing I might add is the lack of dare and belief in our playmakers to pass the ball right before the defensive line, not 5 metres before it. A good half works on committing his opposition then passes the ball.

I thought their win in game 1 was a bit overstated.

Agree with your call regarding defense. Maroons couldn't stand and offload, smothered and then to add insult to injury another around the legs; slows momentum every time. I seriously don't know why it has taken so long to figure this out.

Mushi, I'm a Queenslander. I'm NOT happy this morning.

They ridiculously thought that Hunt is a hooker at origin level and that going sideline to sideline with the ball works in wet and slippery conditions

Where did it go wrong. Paul Vaughan called it prior to game one. The middle, NSW won the ruck comfortably as QLD’s depth issue was highlighted rotating in two middle forwards due to injury who showed why they weren’t selected in the first game. It also showed what might have been if Fittler didn’t have the game management mishap that allowed us to regain our footing in the second half of game one. Then it was Tedesco against a retreating line. If that middle third dominance happens Game One there would be Gus calling for a statue of Latrell Mitchell and Cotric would be a cult hero. I feel a little bad for Cleary, that second stanza was a wet dream for half and there’s going to be all the “see how good we were without Cleary” comments when in reality it’s an apples and oranges. I think he came into the year overrated but getting judged on the first half of that match vs lacks context.

This is why Freddy is king & we're all pretenders. He broke all the rules with mass changes, & came up trumps. I don't know if Queensland sent themselves over the Nullarbor, or cardboard cutouts, while they lived it up in some exotic Pacific island. Even after 20 minutes, it was evident Qld didn't have the energy or enthusiasm they displayed in SOO1. NSW deserved their win, playing with much greater intensity & smarts than in the first game, but Qld also made it easier for them with their collective lack of effort.

The game reminded me a lot of game 1 in 2017 where we had problems with our defensive structure the number of times a hit up was met with 1-2 tacklers rather than 3-4 was enormous. When you don't gang tackle in origin they can get a roll on and bring their backs into play Qlds line speed was too slow and their line wasn't straight. It looked like a loss from the very first set
