Mitch Marsh, Matthew Wade called in to cover for injured duo in World Cup squad

By Scott Bailey / Wire

Mitch Marsh and Matthew Wade have been drafted into Australia’s World Cup camp as cover for Usman Khawaja and Marcus Stoinis.

Khawaja and Stoinis’ World Cup campaigns hang in the balance as they await the result of scans on Sunday in England, after suffering hamstring and side strain issues respectively.

Marsh and Wade will meet the team in Birmingham ahead of Thursday’s semi-final against England, ready to be officially called up if needed.

MORE TO COME.

I would be looking at a batting lineup of Finch, Warner, Smith, Hanscomb, Marsh and Maxwell with Carey at 7 and the bowlers.

Maxwell needs to be batting in the later overs and send Carey up the order if Aus lose early wickets. Maxwell's average and strike rate is significantly better in the later overs and Carey is better for building that platform for Maxwell. Finch has had a good record by cashing in against B side teams and getting alot of luck early in his innings. He could have been out like 3 or 4 times in previous innings earlier on he is too risky and Wade would provide a safer option or even Khawaja opening. Unless the next wickets are flat Finch will get out or get lucky if Eng openers dont perform.

???? Technical means capable of excelling in different conditions. Like difference between Ro and pant.

Actually, I don't know what kind of technical form you're talking but Matt Wade is a clean striker of the ball and in brilliant form too yes, PSP Handscomb also good player but at this stage and against eng I would prefer Matthew Wade and he has played nearly 100 ODIS for AUS

Not former. Was Australia's wicketkeeper-opener in the last World Cup - has played 94 ODIs and 22 Tests

I believe I will disagree. This world cup have been proven to be batsman's who has technique. But I believe Peter Handscomb will make a very good replacement because he is an excellent batsman too. I said left hander because they are classy to watch like our shikhar.

It says Mitch Marsh, Matthew Wade. Mitch Marsh played before as all rounder. I do not recognise the other name. Is he a former player too?

Yeah it does seem to happen all the time doesn't it? Then having sat in a squad from which they are not played, they then get parachuted into the XI for a different format - and lo and behold string together a couple of poor performances and get pilloried.

The selectors have a nasty habit of bringing players into squads (where they are unlikely to actually play) and killing their chances of pressing for a recall in A or domestic games.

I don't think he's been ruled out due to injury yet. Khawaja has.

I like that side but I'd still have Handscomb over Wade unless Wade is going to open. That's where he's been making all his runs. If we need a number 4, Handscomb is your man. Wade's ballistic batting in the A games overshadowed the fact that Handscomb made scores of 64 (57), 28* (36) and 57 (54) in the middle order. That follows 13 ODIs this year where he made 479 runs at 43.54 with a SR of 98.15. Those are elite numbers and he was desperately unlucky not to be playing in this tournament already. If Langer is willing to risk breaking up the prolific Finch/Warner partnership by shuffling one of them down to 3 to accommodate Wade then fine, go for it. Otherwise it has to be Handscomb.

Yes, he'll miss 2x A games. His only 4-day game to press for selection will be Aus v Aus A.

Given the way the standard of tour matches has declined in recent years, it's good to see CA doing something about it (for our away tours, at least).

I wonder how Wade will feel about this. On one hand, it's great to be recognised for his strong summer. On the other, he's unlikely to play in the semi and he misses a chance to press his case for a spot in the Ashes squad.

Handscomb was next in line for a batting/keeping spot anyway. He'd earned that.

They couldn't really pick him after he didn't play in India or the UAE, especially since Carey performed well on those tours. The time to give Wade another chance was back in March, not on the eve of a World Cup.
