Which top eight side looks the shakiest?

By The Roar / Editor

Another round down in the AFL and, as seems to be happening every single week, the finals picture has changed dramatically.

Brisbane and Richmond have gone from finals prospects to virtual certainties over the space of a fortnight, while Fremantle have gone from having one eye on a top four spot to crashing out of the eight – potentially for good.

With the landscape changing from week to week, which team currently in the eight would be feeling the most nervous about their finals chances?

Has Adelaide’s Showdown shocker put them behind the eight-ball? Are Greater Western Sydney faltering at the wrong time of the season? Can Port Adelaide be trusted all the way until September?

We analysed all the finals maybes with Roar editor Stirling Coates, before making a call on which sides, if any, slide out of the eight.

Listen to the discussion:

The finals plot thickened outside the eight too, with the Western Bulldogs stunning Geelong to launch themselves into the finals conversation, while Essendon and North Melbourne both picked up their fourth wins in five matches to keep very much in touch.

hi I think that spot 2 to 8 is not guaranteed, with 9-12 able to still make the top 8. I am a crows supporter and I was embarrassed by my teams effort last week, but never the less I stayed until the final siren at the showdown , because I believe you support your team through thick and thin no matter what, and this finals race is very shaky for everyone. I am very nervous especially since we have to play Essendon next sat at home here. 8v9. I will be there though to support my team the crows, as always and will continue to support them as I have since 1993 through thick and thin.

You really need to listen to the coach and management talk. There's plenty of comment available. Great unity there. Michael Johnson was never 'dumped'. He played every game until his retirement. Sandilands and Ballantyne have not been playing at all this year. Sandi played one game last week to give a break to the bruised and battered 20yo, Sean Darcy, who will be back this week in Sandi's place. Ballantyne is available but has not been played. Who are these 'small' forwards you refer to that are not getting a game? There's Switkowski who has been played all season, Tom North (more of a midfielder who was injured for almost all of his draft year and barely played at Peel), Stefan Giro (who is out all season with a knee). Our top 2 draft picks for this year, Sam Sturt and Luke Valente have missed almost of this season with injury, returning to Peel for the past 2 and 3 games. So much youth has been blooded over the last few years and are now established core players. Some are missing core because they are injured (Hogan, Taberner, Pearce). Look at the youth playing regularly; Pearce, Darcy, Ryan, Duman, Hughes, Nyhuis, Logue, Langdon, Blakely, Brayshaw, Cerra, Cox, Switkowski, Hogan...Pretty good reason for positivity. You seem to be arguing with events and issues that are not occurring.

Stop being so defensive. You sound like Donald 'the child' Trump. It was a genuine question. What is the Fremantle plan? In early 2016 RL said... "We don't rebuild but re-stump, we re-wire, we re-plumb." Three + years (4 seasons) down track (ok, I guessed 5) he says that the club is in a rebuild. Still? If Freo are in a rebuild, and have been through 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, why have they kept guys like Ballantyne and Sandilands on the list. There is no way they will be there for any post rebuild premiership push. All they have been doing is denying games to development players and taking list spots from guys who may turn out to be gems, and who WILL be there come the next push? Fremantle had a number of promising small forwards through 2017-2018 who would be so much better now with an additional 10+ games under their belt, instead of wasting games on HB. If the thinking was (and I'm talking the club management, not necessarily the coach) post 2015 'just a top up and we'll be there', why was Michael Johnson dumped whilst in career best form and the two above were kept? Fremantle just seem like a club where either the coach and management are on different paths, or they think they are on the same path but have opposite ideas on which road to take to get there.

Freo is fully competitive...as shown by only having 12 weeks in the 8. 3 of the 4 weeks they have spent out of the 8 has been in 9th position. This week it is 11th...the first week out of the top half of the comp. They have all the teams competing with them for finals spots to play...only Geelong to go of the favoured sides. Their destiny is in their hands. You mention 5 years. I don't think anyone would complain about where they finished then. Which "mature players" do you refer to? The oldest of their recruits is 26. What do you see as a problem there? Am I able to I "help" you? From the framing of your comment, I'd suspect I can't. You seem to be thinking like Freo's 3 constant critics on The Roar. Such thinking resists elucidation.

Port aren't a genuine contender? Bold of you. Port Adelaide have smashed West Coast (away), smashed the Crows (away showdown), and beaten the Cats and probably should've won by 5 goals if they kicked straight, however they are inconsistent. Losing to teams such as Hawthorn and the Bulldogs might come back to haunt them.

Don, maybe you can help me. To me it seems like Fremantle (the organisation) don't know what they are doing. Is Freo rebuilding/re-stumping/rewiring by going to the draft and building up on young talent for a push in a few years time? The coach mentioned the club being in a rebuild again in the post derby (sack the coach) press conference. Or are they recruiting mature players and retaining long past it ones (Ballantyne, Sandi) because they perceive themselves as in the premiership window? To an outsider it looks like they are having an each way bet and doing neither option very well. If you are rebuilding (still after 5 years) then why retain/recruit as you have?

"Don Nobody hopes you are right more than me..." Good to see that kind of support for Freo, Scott. Far better than the comment that follows which just wishes Freo would lose...always. Who knows what could be the benefit of that? Where's the joy of football?

Good call Scott, the team are bereft of a plan, skills are very poor which as you said has led to low confidence levels. Lost the last 3 in a row, one at home against Carlton . Head to Tassie this week to play the Hawks lost 11 from 11 down there against them. Miracle's do happen but unlikely. A loss sees us slip to 13th and closer to a new coach.

We have.. they're just resting (Cox, Hogan, Taberner). Lobb will have his second game back, Darcy will do the majority of the ruck. Ballas is needed but, you never know...this game might provide Matera's rostered quarter on.

Not sure Don, I think the wheels might fall off. Ross is a great coach but I'm not sure that's enough with last week's debacle and some pretty big outs. Ya got no forward line bro.

Not a fact. You might think it’s going to happen, it might even happen. Even if it does happen, doesn’t make it a fact. It’s still just an opinion.
