NRL Round 18 teams: Graham returns for Dragons, Roosters and Knights bulk up for blockbuster

By Stirling Coates / Editor

The NRL Round 18 teams are in, with the St George-Illawarra Dragons welcoming back James Graham from long injury layoff ahead of their must-win clash with Penrith.

The white-hot Panthers have stocked up too, however, with halfback Nathan Cleary returning from an ankle injury suffered in State of Origin Game 2.

Saturday’s SCG blockbuster between the Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights has seen both teams improve their run-on 13’s. James Tedesco and Boyd Cordner return after being rested for last Sunday’s shock loss to the Cowboys, while Jake Friend moves to the starting lineup after coming off the bench last week.

Newcastle, for their part, welcome Kalyn Ponga back to fullback, while David Klemmer also moves back into the starting lineup.

South Sydney will again be without Sam Burgess after he suffered a setback in his return from a shoulder injury.

You're right, but that was for not resting guys during the Origin series, not after.

You now what if JWH does that to most other player i’d back the NRL in a good suspension. Seeing it was McGuire I actually think it wasn’t that bad. Might knock someone sense into the boof head. Besides both JWH and McGuire love it.

Interesting the Roosters go with Ryan Hall instead of BMoz.

To be fair he was smashed last year for NOT resting players coming off Origin. I guess the difference is that last year they could afford to drop a couple.

Dean Britt starting in the front row, Mark Nicholls (aka "The Yeti") on the bench and no sign of Sam Burgess or AJ? Not Souths best side. Given that Sam Burgess, Tom Burgess, George Burgess and Liam Knight are all unavailable I would have taken a punt on starting the Tevita Tatola clone, Tom Amone and played Bayley Sironen off the bench in lieu of Dean Britt or Mark Nicholls.

This is a nightmare…. Hunt actually came out of Origin with some kudos, not like last year, so he shouldn’t be that short of confidence or fitness. He also works well with Norman. And this is a MUSt win game. And, like Adam notes above/below, if he must be rested, Jai Field would be seriously better than Nicholls. I’m really having great difficulty copping this. This is like ‘Scorched Earth’ theory, if you can’t win – leave a trail of destruction they won’t recover from. Dan Murphy’s better have more Chivas….

I have no idea why Hunt is being rested for a must win game. I also have no idea why Nicholls is playing and not Field, who at least would threaten the defensive line. Also Graham at lock for no apparent reason

Mac Gregor has finally dropped the ball completely. Here he is telling everyone the Dragons can win the comp and he leaves out Ben Hunt for a vital clash. Not sure what is wrong with Ben (paid $1 million a year) but if it is to legitimately rest him, Mac Gregor must go.
