Maloney, Burgess to fight at NRL judiciary

By Matt Encarnacion / Wire

Penrith star James Maloney will contest his tripping charge at the NRL judiciary on Tuesday in a bid to play in their crucial battle with Cronulla on Friday.

And South Sydney captain Sam Burgess will join him in an attempt to also avoid suspension and face ladder leaders Melbourne on Sunday.

Burgess was slapped with a grade-two careless high tackle charge stemming from his shot on Cronulla fullback Matt Moylan on Saturday.

The controversial incident came under the spotlight after the NRL admitted a technical glitch resulted in a belated head injury assessment for Moylan.

Burgess on Monday pleaded guilty to the charge, but will look for a downgrade at the judiciary that will result in a monetary fine.

He will then be free to play against the Storm on the Central Coast.

However, should Burgess be found guilty the English international will be sidelined for two games and will instead be back for their round 23 clash with Brisbane.

Maloney is facing a one-game ban for his grade-one trip on Canterbury hooker Jeremy Marshall-King late in the Panthers’ loss on Saturday night.

A grade-one charge normally attracts just 100 demerit points, however, a prior non-similar offence elevated the points to a minimum one-game ban.

Given a guilty plea would’ve resulted in a one-game ban anyway, it is a free shot for the Super League-bound playmaker.

Meanwhile, Parramatta forward Manu Ma’u is set to be fined for a grade-one careless high tackle in their win over St George Illawarra.

Whatever 'spruce moose' btw, I've played the game at 3rd and 2nd grade level (in the 60's and 70's) and played RL for 20 years, what is your repertoire? Lets leave it at that as it seems like you have no idea!

Yup - you've definitely had one too many 'concussions'. Buddy, 'unless' you played at NRL level, you 'are' as amateur as me.

HaHaaa, come off it 'spruce moose', your just too soft and probably never payed the game or if you did, it must have been at 'touch footy' level!

It's fairly apparent you've copped one too many concussions.

BA, the lawyers thing and million dollars compensations and now 'player welfare safety' has been around for decades as its building up in the NRL. IMO and in regards to 'Based on that Grade 1, it is pretty hard to imagine any player being charged with a Grade 2 careless for the rest of the year' its about time that the NRL started getting fair dinkum, RL is not a soccer game and never ever was intended to be! Just as an example, in Sunday's game Eels v Dragons, Gower copped a fair and square hit on the chin (which was high) not much different to what Moylan copped, the bloke felt it but, he went on and played as if nothing happened, there was no penalty and no dramas! That is how RL should be played. I've copped plenty of high tackles, have had a broken jaw and concussion(s) and in those days, it was all part of the course. I'm not saying that every high tackle or dangerous tackle shouldn't be penalised but, there are allot of the tackles these days that are ridiculously soft and the refs are penalising everything e.g. in the Eels v Dragons, where those crasher tackles were being penalised every second tackle!

There was nothing wrong with Sam’s tackle as the judiciary adjudicated, its simple, Moylan just can’t take it, its got nothing to do with your and the usual excuse of ‘Sams victims are little guys’ that’s not true and I’d put my money on Sam against any of your so called ‘big guys’!

Did you just say Moylan isn't playing this week because "he can't take a hard hit"...?! Righto.... Enjoy laughing. That $1,900 fine should have been a million dollar fine because the Lawyers see this interpretation of "player welfare and safety" and they will be queuing up... Mal Cochrane will bring this game to it's knees. Based on that Grade 1, it is pretty hard to imagine any player being charged with a Grade 2 careless for the rest of the year... Although Sam is free to play, so I suppose it is possible.

Shock horror because and as far as ‘spruce moose’ is concerned ‘God help the NRL if Burgess gets off. He deserves an additional week onto his punishment for having the hide to contest this’ HaHaaa! Burgess’s grade two charge for a high shot on Cronulla’s Matt Moylan was downgraded on Tuesday night, resulting in a $1900 fine and no suspension. Moylan (who can’t take a hard hit, nothing to do with Sam Burgess’s tackle) has since been ruled out of action this week due to ongoing concussion effects suffered in the tackle after initially passing his HIA and returning to play last weekend, hahaa what a cat!

WHF ...what sort of justice system is this.Moylan misses a week an Sam gets to play. Its self evident the Judiciary Panelist are suffering delayed concussion syndrome.

Yeah, bang on Steveng! While we are at it, lets blame all those wounded from the US shootings on the weekend for getting in the way of the innocent bullets. I mean, they are going to all live, so it’s all good isn’t it? No need to press further charges. Like I said: stupid babies need the most attention.

Chui, are you serious? Lets blame Sam Burgess for everything that happened to Moylan! Didn't Moylan play for the rest of the game or part of (except for the 15 min that he had to go off for an HIA) which the Sharks were very reluctant to do?
