Barrett red card 'ridiculous': Eddie Jones

By Daniel Gilhooly / Wire

England coach Eddie Jones has slammed the red card shown to All Blacks lock Scott Barrett as “ridiculous”, saying the Wallabies were beneficiaries of another case of inconsistent Test refereeing.

Barrett’s red card near halftime of New Zealand’s 47-26 loss in Perth on Saturday has drawn polarising views but former Australia coach Eddie Jones was in no doubt French referee Jerome Garces got it wrong.

Jones urged World Rugby to stop big games being “destroyed by inconsistent” match officials” after Barrett was marched when his shoulder made contact with the head of Wallabies captain Michael Hooper.

A Sanzaar judiciary is yet to rule on a dangerous tackle charge but Jones said the on-field red card was too harsh and feared such decisions would ruin key clashes at the World Cup in Japan.

“We need to get some consistency into that area of the game. In the World Cup if you lose a player through a red card as New Zealand did yesterday, it makes the game very difficult.”

Jones’ comments came in the wake of England’s 33-19 win over Wales at Twickenham on Monday morning (AEDT).

The veteran coach said there were two examples of similar Welsh indiscretions that result in penalties but no card of any colour.

He is believed to be referring to incidents involving Wales halfback Aled Davies and No.8 Ross Moriarty.

“I urge World Rugby – although I don’t think they do anything at great pace do they – to get some consistency in that area because otherwise we will have games being destroyed by an inconsistent official making a decision on a law that’s not clear.

“There has to be some common sense applied but maybe common sense was applied today really well.”

England’s win deprived Wales of the No.1 world ranking.

Victory would have handed Six Nations champions Wales the top spot for the first time, ending New Zealand’s decade-long reign.

Its never really a debate with you Neil is it? Have you ever listened or changed your mind even when exchanging with the experts on the site? You only come on here to pick a fight so you can keep your ad hominem 'debates' buddy. Best of luck in Japan

One of Eddies fly half’s has history in no-arm tackles. Could Eddies real agenda be to put pressure on WC refs not to red card? His other agenda is that he never misses an opportunity to piss on the ARU since his departure.

I think the coaches are more concerned of the impact of a red card. Depending on when a red card is given in match it has the potential of ending the contest. Its not just a penalty to the player or team. The opposition team is effectively given the match if it is given in the first half or early in the second. No one wants the contest to go away - not the fans, not the players, not the coaches, not world rugby. The red card penalty has to change so that the contest continues. 15 mins in sin bin or a penalty try but dont stop the contest. As great as the Wallaby win was, it looses he gloss when its 15 against 14

Yep, almost as if he has a vested interest in the standard applied to Owen Farrell last year being applied "consistently" rather than the one applied to Barrett over the weekend...

Utter dross as usual Neil. Does this clip mention Owen Farrell and his repeated illegal and dangerous shoulder charges? Daggett is bang on. Thank the rugby gods that we won't have to deal with the Twickenham tmo this world cup

I've no idea why you so publicly embarrass your self mate. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChCTVpp4OGw 6 minutes in the subject comes up and within a minute and a half he uses the word 'consistency' or 'inconsistency' no less than 5 times. Be a dullard if you like, but why not just do it in private?

The concerning thing is that there have only been two red cards given to the ABs in the last 50 years and both were from Garces. He will referee the NZ - South Africa pool match in Japan. We need to understand and follow his interpretations.

It is ridiculous! But seventeen years without the cup!? And suddenly 15 boys on 14 men seems nearly fair! Add in that French Folk-er and with a 8-4 penalty count and missing 14 neck roles against the All Blacks... This happened with mates-rates Wayne Barnes. Problem is, this gives a false sense of security. It would be like a cricket umpire allowing the Australian team one underarm delivery per over. But when the normal rules are applied reality hits. All Blacks by plenty in the gardenz that’s lethal Eden !!

Well Eddie, take a look at the Foxsports page, they have uploaded a new angle on the Barrett Red. Hooper was wrapped up and it was a cheap shot by Barratt with his elbow and shoulder to Hoopers head, nasty. Definately a red, correct decision. No wonder Hooper yelped...

He did specifically say he didn't agree with the Barrett card though. "I thought it was ridiculous. A bloke gets tackled, he [Barrett] goes to be second man in and his shoulder hits his head, and he gets a red card."

Yes but the point Jones was making was about consistency across the board. Let’s say Oz and NZ and England and Wales were in the same pool and last weekend happened. Next pool match NZ goes up against Wales one less because one ref got it right where wales get to keep their TWO players because the refs didn’t apply the rule consistently. That was Jones point. And not only is it the imbalance across the pool, within each match one side gets to keep its XV where another doesn’t. NZ in this case gets twice impacted- off and miss matches, where Wales- keep XV vs England AND match vs ABs. Huge discrepancy in the pool, or across the knockouts if players are red carded in one match and not another for exactly the same thing.

Well, no. I don't dispute that Barrett's red was justified (Eddie's wrong about that) but if the law isn't applied consistently then that's an issue.

Agree Mike B. To me it seemed clear that the contact was by forearm and elbow. An elbow to the head has to be a red card.
