All Blacks starting XV player ratings

By Offside / Roar Rookie

A magnificent performance by the All Blacks in wet and windy conditions. Keeping the Wallabies scoreless was perhaps the most satisfying aspect of the night.

Only one player (Dane Coles) can put his hand up as lacking, but he has enough history to be allowed the odd mare.

1. Joe Moody (7)
Part of a reversal in the All Blacks’ forward pack from last week. Not as dominant around the field as Nepo Laulala but held up his end of the scrum.

2. Dane Coles (5)
Worst performance I can recall from Coles. Lineout was dysfunctional and copped a rather rough yellow card.

3. Nepo Laulala (9)
Dominant in the scum and around the field. Has Owen Franks played his last test?

4. Patrick Tuipoluto (9)
A colossus in the forwards, his best game for any team I have seen him play. Looks like he’s lost 20 pounds and replaced it with muscle. The All Blacks have locking options to burn.

5. Sam Whitelock (6)
Part of a dominant scrum, but largely missing-in-action around the field. As the chief lineout caller, has to take some responsibility for the dysfunction. However, has a history that makes any faults at Eden Park irrelevant.

6. Ardie Savea (9)
Massive game from the number 6, or should that be 8? A physical shadow of the giant Jerome Kaino, but with as much go forward and stopping power. Runs like he’s got a dozen Energizer batteries inside him.

7. Sam Cane (7)
A standard performance by Sam Cane. Made a number of turnovers and a lot of tackles. Unfairly penalized.

8. Kieran Read (7)
His best game for the All Blacks for some time. But with Savea playing 8 for attacking scums and his go forward while playing 6 for defensive scums and his stopping power, you have to wonder if Read is hanging on by way of being captain. Great effort at lock for Tuipoluto.

9. Smith (8)
His best game for the All Blacks, again for some time. Box kicking was excellent, his retrieving his own box kicks was just as impressive. Good service to Mo’unga who thrived under the service.

10. Richie Mo’unga (9)
Easily his best game for the All Blacks ever. Kicking, running, passing and defense were all impressive. As one of his harshest critics, he has proved me wrong. However, needs to back it up in the 4 tests before the RWC playoffs.

11. George Bridge (10)
Absolutely into everything. Couldn’t put a foot wrong and was a constant threat. Scored a well-deserved try. Cannot give the man enough praise. My player of the day.

12. Sonny Bill Williams (7)
Another player who had his best ever game for the All Blacks. Good defense, some good offloads and a very good try. Would have got an 8 but for all the time he spent looking at himself on the big screen.

13. Anton Lienert-Brown (8)
This was a night of the bests from the All Blacks as ALB was yet another player who put in his best performance for the team. Great distribution, excellent tackling and a constant threat in the backline all night for the Wallabies.

14. Sevu Reece (9)
A serious threat to any team. Denied a try when the ref decided a knock-on advantage gets the same consideration of a penalty advantage.

Yes, we knocked on after the kick-off but Australia had secured the ball and released their backline. Advantage over. Absolutely brilliant try earlier though.

15. Beauden Barrett (8)
Hardly put a foot wrong. Did very well under the high ball on a wet and greasy night. Nailed his one kick attempt from wideout and with his nemesis Adidas ball. Excellent defense as evident in the giant doughnut for the Wallabies.

Overall, the best performance we have seen from the All Blacks in many a year. Hansen proved me wrong and alleviated my fears. He does have a plan. He has been keeping his powder dry and watch out world, here we come!

That was one of the reasons I went into meltdown last week. Dropping Smith for not playing the superstar on the wing instead of where he's the best in the world at. But I think his comments about his hammy indicates he'll be taking him. Hopefully not on the wing though. Mounga/Smith to start and Barrett off the bench at 60?....

"Another player who had his best ever game for the All Blacks. Good defense, some good offloads and a very good try. Would have got an 8 but for all the time he spent looking at himself on the big screen." Agree about Hansen's love child. If he performs like that throughout the RWC and doesn't get injured, I'll be glad he had him.

After he played like that I would expect to see him in Japan too

Offside this is rugby...The last 20 is critical for a win and the quality of subs can certainly decide games but the first 60 will decide the game 80% of the time...BB is 2 times world player of the year and in rugby that does not go to a sub or a player who should be on the bench....

SBWs only skill is drawing in 2 or 3 players, he's bloody good at that, his offload is now part of a team that can offload just like him, he has gotten slower over the last few years, Hansen loves him, so expect to see him in Japan.

I think we will see a slightly different team against Tonga, Hansen will want to give the bench players game time, so he can pick some of them for his final team, based on form of course.

The best Fullback in the world isn't even in the mix, played him at wing Ffs!!! I still question Hansens tactics, and I hope he is only resting Ben from Accounts for the RWC.

I disagree, he had a good try, but obviously you haven't been watching the ABs games, the whole team offloads like him now, and just as well, he has been over rated for years, but, he will be there, as he is Hansens love child.

Kieran Read was a beast on defence and is now basically playing blindside flanker while wearing the 8 jersey, while Savea is doing the opposite. Interestingly, Read and Savea have been the two best All Black forwards in both tests vs Australia since Hansen unveiled his new look back row.

Is the author aware that Sam Whitelock made more tackles than any other player on either team in the test? Missing in action? Really?

Thought that was Sonny's best game since he got sent off in the Lions series Jacko. I was surprised at the amount of turnovers the Wallabies conceded actually; it stifled any momentum. Coles should know better; White was obviously baiting him and milked the outcome.

Best game I have seen from Patrick. Needs to sync better with the line-out tho. Laulala was impressive wasn't he. Loved the 7-man scrum annihilating the Wallaby scrum. Nice comment Pete...

Don't want to negate the author's obvious enthusiasm but I agree with your assessment. The back row was brilliant at Eden Park. Cane carried and made some big hits. Read was outstanding but it was Savea who stood out for me. Great leg-drive, well past the gain-line, almost every time. So many turn-overs. As for Whitelock? Fantastic. A tackling machine. We are still missing Retallick, especially at line-out time.

So basically, 8 for SBW, -1 because you don't like him?

Serious question...was there an article like this after we lost last week? Think I missed it, would be interesting to see the ratings after that game.

Dane Coles was a “3” more like it. Ref blatantly warns him, next play does something worse, lucky Nic didnt land on his head. Yes Dane Coles is brilliant and served NZ very well, but that makes his stupidity stand out more.

Speaking of guys who like watching themselves on the big screen: Anyone notice O'Connor being done for pace at least twice? Can the Wallabies afford so many backs of mediocre foot speed?

150 points would be all 15 players getting 10's. If that were the case, we'd have won by 100 points. Coles got an above average rating because he is a brilliant player. He started at 8, lost a point for his penalties, lost a point for his yellow card (albeit harsh), lost 2 points for his lineout throwing, a key component for his position which he sucked at. He got a couple of points for his turnovers and general play. 8 minus 4 plus 2 = 6.

Like I said, he'd have been given an 8 if he didn't look at himself on the big screen all night. He played his best game yet, but wasn't as good as Mounga or Bridge. So he gets an 8 -1 for vanity. 7.

Start at 8, points off for the penalties, points off for the lineout that he commanded gives you 6 points. Accept with those stats I didn't give him credit for his defense. Obviously lots of tackles in and around the ruck that aren't as noticeable. Typical tight forward play. So I'll give him another point. 7.
