Too bloody right!! Ya bloody cheats!!

The nationality doesn’t affect the coaching ability. What nationality does affect is supporter tolerance during the inevitable hard times.

Same nationality -> patriotic support -> easier job.
Different nationality -> patriotic suspicion -> harder job.

Of course it won’t matter if the Wallabies win a lot of games, but I’m not betting on that. Far more likely, the losing will continue until the ruin that EJ left behind is rebuilt, and that won’t happen overnight no matter how talented the coach is.

Coaches that are rebuilding need people to have faith in them that things will improve regardless of results. Whenever the Wallabies lose Schmidt will need support, but that’s also when people will remember Schmidt’s nationality. I wish him luck.

I wonder how much he’s being paid. Enough for a good retirement? Surely more than RA can afford.

Still pretty difficult to prove that a discussion was never had. “Shall we change our policy?” “No” is still a discussion. 😂

Seriously though, I reckon what they have is perfect. Currently new talent seldom gets frustrated by the way ahead being blocked by incumbents because the incumbents eventually, inevitably, head overseas to the big money. And ex-All Blacks look more attractive (and command higher prices) than never-weres. So youth redoubles its efforts to get into the All Blacks because that’s the path to the big money, and the All Blacks retain their mana. And it’s that that’s most pivotal to their success.

It was a crying shame when Carl Hayman, best tighthead prop in the world at the time, headed off overseas. But the ABs weathered that, as they will weather all departures, as long as they remain the conduit for talented new players to head through. I hear the question, how does NZ at a piddly 5 million expect to compete with the Japans and UKs of the world? Well, how do you think they compete at the moment? The day there is no more quality talent coming through is the day rugby is done in NZ and we all switch to tiddlywinks, and you get to win back your house. 😂 😂

'It wasn't discussed': All Blacks to keep selection ban on overseas based players, even as more head abroad

How long is “eventually”? As long as you want it to be to keep your house safe? 😛

I look into my crystal ball and I seeeee…

O’Gara is hired and, despite all odds, achieves a 38% win rate!

Then in 2026, the year before the next RWC, Mickey Cheikamouse is fired by rugby Argentina and there is a brief window of opportunity to obtain him…

RA must not fixate on an Aussie coach - why Ronan O'Gara is best choice to lead Wallabies after the Eddie calamity

But misplaced parochialism is what it’s all about!!

Seriously though, I agree with Bobby. If the new coach is not Australian, and doesn’t achieve an impossible (in the short term) win rate, they’ll cop too much criticism for them to do their job properly. Pick a local up-and-comer without a clown’s ego, don’t pay them a mint to start with, give them the chance to learn on the job, it’s a win all round.

Hamish: “We should spend $50 million to publicize rugby in Australia.”
Treasurer: “Can’t afford it. How about hiring Sua’ali’i?”

Rugby News: RA hunting missing million after contract blunder, Suaalii worth 10x more than his deal, McKellar's big win

Salty. Smith was one of my favourite players, no joke. He was just really unlucky to be around at the time of McCaw. McCaw was simply the best, end of story.

COMMENT: 'Best interests of the game'? Hamish's dummy spit proves RA was right to cut him loose

It was important that Hamish went. There had to be some accountability for the debacle, and he was the logical choice. Now the board knows that they are not immune.

That said, there’s no benefit in bagging the new replacement yet, nor demanding the removal of any of the rest. There’s a limit to how much power fans have. We’ve had our scalps: EJ has gone; Hamish has gone; for the good of Australian rugby any criticism should be constructive now, at least for a while.

I don’t subscribe to the “we wuz robbed” mindset at all. You win some, you lose some, and I agree with the cards and their colours.

That said though, I totally think Aaron Smith’s try should have stood. It was unlikely to make any difference – the red card had already happened, and we shortly scored a try after the knock on was ruled anyway. And if it changed everything, well we might just as likely have lost by a greater margin. But going back that far was a ridiculous decision.
