My All Australian side after Round 23

By Doran Smith / Roar Guru

Based on the 2019 home-and-away AFL season, I have picked my All Australian team.

There are no players that have been selected in the team after Round 23 that were selected in the after Round 6.

There are eight players that have been selected in the team after Round 23 that were also chosen in the team compiled after Round 11: Daniel Rich, Jeremy McGovern, Michael Walters, Jeremy Cameron, Brodie Grundy, Andrew Gaff, Marcus Bontempelli and Lachie Neale.

There are just seven players that have retained their spots in the team from the team compiled after Round 17: Daniel Rich, Brad Sheppard, Andrew Gaff, Lachie Neale, Michael Walters, Marcus Bontempelli and Jack Macrae.

There are two new co-captains in the team compiled after Round 23: Bachar Houli from the Tigers and Marcus Bontempelli from the Bulldogs.

My All Australian side after Round 23
B: Dylan Grimes (Tigers), Harris Andrews (Lions), Brad Sheppard (Eagles)

Backs
Dylan Grimes has been an important part of the Tigers’ defence this season. Grimes is one of the reasons why the Tigers are considered contenders.

Harris Andrews has been a pivotal reason why the Lions made the top four.

Brad Sheppard maintains his spot in a side from Round 17 as he has still been an important part of the Eagles’ defence.

Nick Vlastuin has stepped up in the absence of Alex Rance and embraced his role playing on half back.

Jeremy McGovern is an important part of the Eagles team. Mcgovern is probably the best centre half back in the AFL.

Bachar Houli has great leadership qualities and has become an elite player in the competition.

Midfielders
Patrick Dangerfield is one of the best players in the competition.

Nat Fyfe is the second favourite to win this season’s Brownlow Medal for a reason.

Andrew Gaff has been a pivotal part of the Eagles’ midfield.

Forwards
Dustin Martin has been instrumental in the Tigers being the current premiership favourite.

Jack Darling is third on the goal-kicking list in the competition. Darling works hard around the ground, too.

Charles Cameron is also third on the goal list this season and has been an integral part of the Lions finishing in the top four.

Jeremy Cameron won the Coleman Medal this season.

Marcus Bontempelli is a great leader. He leads by his actions and never wastes a possession.

Followers
Brodie Grundy is unanimously known as the best ruckman in the competition, Grundy’s performance is Round 23 is indicative of why he is selected in this team.

Lachie Neale is a chance of winning the Brownlow Medal as he had a consistent season.

Jack Macrae doesn’t only accumulate plenty of the ball, but uses it constructively.

Interchange
Mark Blicavs fought his way into this All Australian team as he can play defence and as a second ruck.

Daniel Rich makes the Lions a better side as he provides a lot of run out of defence.

Michael Walters has played a pivotal role in the Dockers being a mathematical possibility to make the top eight up until Round 23.

Adam Trelaor has accumulated the most possessions in the AFL this season.

Harris Andrews over James Sicily?? Really? I know he rubs people the wrong way, but he still deserves his spot in All Australian. Has had a far superior season than Harris.

WC finished 1 game off first place. Irrespective, the AA squad is not a team award but rather an individual one. 7 Eagles in the official squad of 40.

You mean the time we played with no Astbury, Ellis or Riewoldt? Our best forward and tallest defender? Not sure that's a fair indication, tbh.

4 Eagles for the team that finished 5th? No cats in starting defence when they gave up 139 points less than the next best team?

I mostly agree with you here, far too many premier midfielders. Dusty doesn't deserve a spot, a fine first half of the season followed by an excellent second half does not an All Australian make. I would say the most important part of an All Australian gong is playing at an elite standard consistently. For that reason I would put a line through Kelly and Cripps both of them have had too many quiet games. The most consistent mids this year have been Neale, Bontempelli, Fyfe and Macrae. They should take the 2 rovers spots and 2 other mid roles. I would then select a wingman like McCluggage as you said for the spare wing and then either Gaff or Yeo for 1 of the half forward spots, then no more mids except for the bench

I think you forgot about a bloke called Sicily, had an outstanding year. Him in for Houli or Vlastuin.

You did well knocking out the western pretender too. But the Cats flogged you.

Think Daniel Rich is a lock for one of the defensive small positions in the starting 18.

I agree, the strength of the tigers this year is their evenness across every line. Almost impossible to shut down an entire team as opposed to the one or two standouts the cats have.

Tigers don't have spots! You must be thinking of leopards.

So many players picked out of position in this team. Dangerfield is not a wingman. Bontempelli is not a forward pocket. Houli and Vlaustin should not even be in the running - Sicily obviously ahead of both of these. McCluggage is actually a wingman, so he should be on the wing ahead of Dangerfield, though room for Danger should be made elsewhere. And where is Tim Kelly? Did the first 14 rounds of the season just not count. Seems as though your team is based on the last few weeks, but the actual team is based on the season.
