Quade Cooper swipes at outgoing Wallabies coach on social media

By The Roar / Editor

Former Wallaby Quade Cooper has wasted no time waiting for the dust to settle after Michael Cheika’s resignation, having a crack at the outgoing coach on Twitter.

Responding to a tweet reporting the news of Cheika’s departure, Cooper said “If he actually cared about Aus rugby he would have done it a while ago.”

Cooper, who made 70 appearances for the Wallabies between 2008 and 2017, is one of the most hotly debated players in Australia.

His move from the Queensland Reds – where he was dropped for the 2018 season by coach Brad Thorn – to the Melbourne Rebels led to speculation he could work his way back into the national team.

However, he was left out of the squad going to Japan, with Cheika preferring Christian Lealiifano at No.10 for the majority of the tournament.

Cheika announced on Sunday that he would step down from his position as Wallabies coach, following a 16-40 loss to England in the quarter-finals.

“I got asked the question in the press conference, you would’ve been there and listening, about what’s going to happen going forward and at the time I wasn’t keen to answer but I always knew the answer in my head, I just wanted to speak to my wife and tell a few people up there about it,” said Cheika on Sunday.

“I put my chips in earlier in the year I told people no win, no play.

“So, I’m the type of man who always going to back what he says and I knew from the final whistle but I just wanted to give it that little bit time to cool down, talk to my people and then make it clear.”

Where are the "former All Black or two that’s had something to say" names? You know, the mouthy petty criminals who think the world revolves around them. And can't tackle - did we mention that? Or will it be just more distraction and whataboutism? Because there's a lot of that about as well.

Hey Danny, Well were you also critical of Rona or Lance who both had a little chip at Cheika on the way out.? I must have missed your heartfelt condemnation of them. But lemme guess they are not Quade Cooper so it don't matter. Hate to tell you this but a Kiwi who just can't get over Cooper ain't an unusual thing on the internet. (Not to mention the Thorn hero-worship)

Ruckin you're a master of the fine art of whataboutism I see. If there are current or former ABs who are behaving like Cooper please point them out and I'll be equally as critical. I can't think of any but I'll wait to hear back with names. And if there are valid names I'll cop the implied bias or hyprocrasy or whatever it is I'm having tagged with in the final para. Otherwise I won't and perhaps it'll look more like projection.

Hey Danny, I admire the guy and hope he can turn the Reds around Ditto, so far it ain't happening though, much the reverse. He took on Qld Country and won the comp in his first year. Nick Stiles did similar with City, didn't seem to do him much good though. “did not fit the culture or direction he wanted to take the team in”. Well firstly the direction has been down so that's fair enough I dunno who would want to fit in with a downward direction. Other that that all we really have is a meaningless platitude. I look at Cooper’s background and see incident upon incident – What 3 maybe 4 - for a guy who's been in the public eye for about a decade that's pretty small. AND he's been spot on a few times too. . I called Cooper out for public ill discipline again. Which is a huge stretch why can't Cooper make public comment, a number of others have without condemnation. There's probably a former All Black or two that's had something to say about the AB's / Hansen. Is that not allowed ? Do former players sign some kind of vow of silence on the way out ?

I don't think deification is accurate Ruckin. I admire the guy and hope he can turn the Reds around. He took on Qld Country and won the comp in his first year. Reds has been a much tougher challenge obviously. It was widely reported he sacked Cooper for reasons that I paraphrase as "did not fit the culture or direction he wanted to take the team in". I look at Cooper's background and see incident upon incident - especially ill disciplined public statements. I put one and one together and call it two. Wallabies lose the QF and Cooper fires off publicly what a lot of people obviously thought privately. I called Cooper out for public ill discipline again. That seems to have upset you. I'm sorry that it has. I never meant to do that.

Hey Danny, Well generally I like my team to finish as far away from the bottom of the ladder as possible. So when they have a season that sees them move down the ladder towards the bottom I generally see that as a bad thing. You personally might well say "bewdy we're headed for last spot, how good is that". But that's not how I see it. my language suggested something something That was probably a poor choice of words. my apologies. You didn't suggest - you stated that you knew exactly why Thorn sacked Cooper. That you had the inside scoop, the good oil, from the horses mouth. Then it turned out you were just guessing. AND that's all against a background of your deification of Thorn.

So this is reduced now down to whether 13th is better than second last and whether my language suggested something something somehow don’t go to games or know someone so be quiet?

Hey Danny, But to suggest one has to know someone to comment on them is a bit out there surely Your comments seem to suggest you have inside information as to why Thorn sacked Cooper. Yet apparently you don't. So make all the comments you like, but you're just guessing. And it might well be a spot on guess - but it's still a guess. Don’t know the back story to Frisby. Well there'e nothing publicly to suggest he fits the "loose cannon" theory. And you don't know the back story to any of the others but that hasn't stopped you commentating ;) Why is Frisby the exception to your guessing game ? won more games attractively in the recent two years So you don't get to many Reds games - fair enough. As to results Lets keep it simple. 2016 Reds 4th last, 2017 Reds 5th last. Then Thorn - 2018 Reds 3rd last, 2019 Reds 2nd last. It's waaaaay to early to call any kind of trend but so far under Thorn the trajectory of the Reds is down. So your point is that the Reds needed to make a change, and it doesn't matter that the trajectory of that change is downwards. I'd disagree. But then I'm only judging Thorn on the results, not the god-like status you've attributed to him.

Everyone has a bias Ruckin and sure I have mine. But to suggest one has to know someone to comment on them is a bit out there surely? Have you ever made an observation on someone you don't know? Perhaps not? As to the loose cannons I was meaning Cooper, Hunt and Slipper mainly. Don't know the back story to Frisby. As to results - since 2014 Reds have come 13th, 13th, 15th, 14th, 13th and 14th winning 5 games, 4, 3, 4, 6, 6 so I can't agree they are worse under Thorn. If anything they've won more games attractively in the recent two years. All this after dumping so-called stars and having a tough time recruiting because - well who wants to go there when for 20 years they've been generally awful. In 2010-13 they came 5th, 1st, 3rd and 5th which is the only bright period in the Super 12+ era. They won twice in the Super 10 era 1994 and 95 - was anyone here alive for that? Otherwise since 1999 when they topped the table but lost the semi it's been 7th, 4th, 4th, 8th, 10th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 12th and 13th in 2009. But by all means the Reds should keep doing what they've been doing because it's just been awesome.

Quade hasn't played well for a few years. Foley in 2015 was better. After the last world cup - both had negatives - not much in it. I think Quade was let down by Deans. Quade's biggest strength was his amazing creativity and his freakish skills. Deans coached that out of him - he became less creative and more structured. He through less stupid coach killer passes, but also became less impactful. Fans hated him when he played for the Wallabies. Personally I thought in his prime the players around him just couldnt keep up with his creativity. Shame. He could really open a game up. I wish he hadnt of commented re Cheika. Didnt need to do that.

Totally agree. So few can handle the ego of the brilliant, even though they know that they’re brilliant. My grandmother once said to my Dad, “who does this Dennis Lillie think he is?!” My dad replied, probably one of the greatest bowlers of all time. Likewise when 1966 surfing world champ Nat Young got beaten shitless by a guy I know at Angourie point, even some of his mates said he deserved it. Dreadful reactions from people he liked and respected who quite simply just couldn’t deal with the fact that he was one of the greatest surfers of all time. Understanding ego is what’s the problem with rugby globally. Between nations and within nations. Between the governing bodies and the coaches and refs and the TV match officials and the touch judges and the players. I adore the game but gees there’s a lot of shit to get removed.
