Jerome Garces to referee Rugby World Cup final

French referee Jerome Garces has been appointed to control the Rugby World Cup final between England and South Africa in Yokohama.

Jerome Garces will referee the Rugby World Cup final between England and South Africa in Yokohama on Saturday, the first Frenchman to be given the honour.

Garces will be joined by Romain Poite (France) and Ben O’Keeffe (New Zealand) as assistant referees and Ben Skeen (New Zealand) as the television match official.

“It is a dream as a referee, but this is a team sport, and as a team of four, we will be out there to do the best for the teams, the fans, the sport, but also the entire match officials team, selectors and support team, who have worked so hard over the last four years,” Garces said.

England’s Wayne Barnes will take charge of the third-place playoff between New Zealand and Wales on Friday.

South Africa’s Jaco Peyper, who was not considered for the semi-finals after posing with Wales fans mocking his red card decision in their quarter-final win over France, will be one of his assistants, along with Pascal Gauzere of France, with Marius Jonker (South Africa) as TMO.

More name calling? You know it doesn't make your argument better (or even exist) if you add insults.

Ralph, in the pub as in the field it’s all about the referee’s/publican’s feel for the flow. In either case, you don’t want a tight head playing havoc with the put-in - and don’t even get me started on the hookers! :-)

Exactly. Now do it in real time while keeping 40 other things in mind.

Possibly, but I reckon they feel compelled to look at it when something like that comes up on the big screen, focussing directly on it. There is a lot of other things for the TMO to check.

“The protocol on how it should be applied” sounds suspiciously like “matters for referee’s judgement on the spot.” in which case you are saying that if the referee agrees with you it was a sound, nay Solomonic, decision. Otherwise the man’s a born fool.

Garces managed Skeen regards a forward pass in the Eng - Aust 1/4 final. He completely disregarded Skeen's opinion.

Maybe however the TMO has multiple screens available to him so he might have seen it anyhow.

Yeah true but many comments in here regards referees - many before the game is even played - go beyond boorish.

Have just looked at the first 3 Dave. Not offside at all let alone 2 to 3 metres offside.

"Shouting “Offside! Geez ref!” in the pub while you chug your seventh schooner does not count as experience in this context." When did this rule change come in??

Ha ha ha. No matter how hard you try there is always that one thing you missed in preparation.

Don't try too hard. I suspect things could easily fall apart.
