Peter Siddle in line for shock Test recall in latest Australian squad news

By The Roar / Editor

Peter Siddle has officially been added to Australia’s Test squad as the side looks to replace injured fast bowler Josh Hazlewood.

The 35-year-old, whose Test career has been revived more times than Kenny from South Park, is a shock addition to a squad which already includes James Pattinson and Michael Neser.

Siddle played in three Ashes Tests. While he was very economical at Edgbaston, taking 2/80 with an economy of just 2.05, he went for well over 3.5 an over at both Lord’s and The Oval, taking just five wickets for 215 runs.

Australia’s XI to play in the Boxing Day Test will likely be announced at the toss.

The Test series with New Zealand may still be underway, but Australia have also revealed the ODI squad they’ll take to India for a three-match tour in January.

Marnus Labuschagne’s incredible form with the bat has been rewarded in the form of an international white-ball debut, while Glenn Maxwell won’t make his ODI return just yet after he took a break from the game recently to deal with a mental health issue.

National selector Trevor Hohns said it was “great to see Glenn Maxwell returning to the game in the Big Bash League,” while promising to monitor his form closely.

Selectors have also opted to stick with the ripping T20 combination of Sean Abbott and Kane Richardson, while Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar will handle all the spinning duties (although Agar has been included as an all-rounder) with Nathan Lyon left out of the squad.

“Adam Zampa and his growing combination with Agar is also something the selectors want to see more of while Nathan Lyon remains in the one-day squad selection frame,” Hohns said.

Justin Langer will not travel with the side, having spent almost a year and a half away from his family. Senior assistant coach Andrew McDonald will take charge of the side for the tour.

“Macca is an exceptional coach in all forms of the game and has been fantastic since coming on board. He will do a great job with this squad. We are in very, very good hands,” Langer said.

Well last year lyon just didn't get a wicket and got carted , and year before cook mastered him. Meanwhile jadeaja took wickets last year so a spinner was effective there not just lyon. I think swepson would be a surprise packet there, his seven wickets at mcg in shield demonstrate he likes it there. He may go for some more runs but he gets wickets , same can be said for starc who can get big bags of wickets but often has the higher economy rate of the pace bowlers . Just food for thought going in to mcg . Nothing will change with selectors though. It cost us last year.

Id be surprised too. Theres a big argument to say if its flat they could do without lyon and use labs/smith /head and wade as filler with four seamers . On the last two matches at mcg that holds up to an extent . Lyon loves to have that bounce in aussie pitches. We’ve discussed it all before of course and know they selectors are glued to lyon every match. I still can’t help but think if theres less bounce at mcg then swepson would be a good gamble and invaluable experience as we are 1 nil up in the series but as you say the selectors just won’t budge on lyon . Of course you’d play him every day of the week at adelaide and perth particularly with new ball and probably at brisbane too given the bounce and conditions he likes and the amazing ability and consistency he has demonstrated at those there grounds . We are almost at a similar dilemma to last year where starc and lyon came off great tests at perth and were relied upon at mcg. I think the two variables are that starc has righted up his bowling and pace is well and the status of the mcg pitch. If starc were to have three other seamers who can bat well around him then it gives me a bit more comfort with him if its a flatter deck and he can be targeted in short spells , not to mention we can rest and not rotate him as much otherwise if the pitch is flat , we bowl lyon in long spells and generally thats allowed cook to flourish on a flat deck two seasons ago and india to rack up decent runs last year without losing wickets. It was a mistake on last years evidence but perhaps the curator will juice this pitch up a bit more. I notice jadeaja did the job last year which Is why I think about swepson potentially being effective at mcg. , he’s a test bowler for me swepson , less of a one day spinner. Selectors won’t have a bar of it until sydney which has been exposed in a roar article as a potentially floored concept going for two spinners there more recently.

He was injured early at oval though chris, massive side strain, paine said he had to play through a huge pain barrier. The bigger question there was did they know he had a strain going in to the match . If so the buck stops with the selectors at the oval again, unless siddle didn't fess up out of desperation to play

Id agree with that off the field unless specific comments are made by the person, on the field we can be honest about a lot of things we are witnessing if they keep happening though over a series of tests of course. Langers improved the squad and the mentality for me since lehmann , its definitely seems like a happier team across the board. We do have some room for improvement with selectors preparing for abroad and they way they select abroad in particular, Our overseas tour performance and results (like many teams) need big improvement still, we still haven’t had a decent series win abroad for some time really. this season is like a confidence building one off as not much cooking with foreign tours after it , next summer will be critical against india as we lead in to the SA tour and we may need to consider who needs the experience before heading to SA in early 2022 so thats the challenge for langer. I think hohns has had a long time at the helm for mixed results in his last tenure.

Disgraceful to drop Maxi after averaging 33 at a 133 strike rate in 2019.

Much better to be playing cricket than carrying sunscreen, aeroguard and drinks. That a job for Sidds. If I was Richardson or Meredith, I'd be hoping for 3 or 4 BBL games rather than watching a test and bowling in the nets. It's cricket season. Ashton Agar must have been 12th man for over 10 games in the last few seasons. These guys need to play.

Just silly centering in on one individual. Some blame Hohns, some blame Langer, lots blame Chappell, some blame Waugh... Hohns gets blamed for when Inverarity was in charge, Langer when Lehmann was running the show, yet none of them are praised. These guys are a team and some of the posters who zero in on one selector really surprise me. We know some, like anon, do this as their thing but others who uzually write really good cricket posts just lose it when it comes to imagining how a selection panel operates. These are professional men, not backyard haters waving a grudge at Australian cricketers.

Who was that all rounder who was lied to? Surely not Maxi. Top player but not an all rounder. Maybe they monitored his bowling and found it wanting.

That's why singling out one person...especially someone who wasn't even involved...is an indication of personal hatred of a person ( in this case, Langer) rather than a sporting comment. I don't know why anon reads sporting websites.

I find he’s never had an original thought, bends with the wind and doesn’t back his promises. —- He was party to sacking Ferguson. An experienced selector doing that shows he’s a either a dilettante or a reprobate. —- I’m like Shakespeare and Dylan. I am at the cutting edge of the English language. ROTFLMAO.

From the Urban Dictionary... "Often well-meaning, empathetic, and creative, the dilettante shoots him/herself in the foot over and over again by forsaking specific skills and knowledge and starting from scratch." ---- That fits what he did to Glen Maxwell, non?

He's monitored players before. Promises were made. Promises broken. They keep searching for an all-rounder. They had one and lied to him. Everyone lived happily ever after.

Then your knowledge of the correct usage of words (as opposed to “merely dropping them” much as one would casually drop that one “knows” Russell Crowe) needs some revision.
