Canterbury re-sign Jackson for three years

By Scott Bailey / Wire

Canterbury have ended any speculation over captain Josh Jackson’s future, re-signing him on a three-year deal.

The Bulldogs confirmed the back-rower’s signature on Sunday, on a contract that will keep him in the kennel until the end of 2023.

A one-club player at Canterbury, Jackson was the Bulldogs’ clubman of the year in 2019 and remains in contention to return to the NSW State of Origin team.

“He is an incredibly popular figure here at Belmore,” chief executive Andrew Hill said.

“He represents everything that is great about our club in the way that he carries himself on and off the field.

“He is a quality player who leads from the front every week but just as importantly he is an outstanding person who contributes a great deal in the community.”

There had been some speculation Jackson could be on the look out for a new club, but realistically it would have been a shock to see him leave.

Jackson will turn 29 in January and had groin and hip surgery earlier this month, however he will be fit to return to training in the new year.

The captain will be turning 32 by the end of this deal meaning it could potentially be his last in the NRL, and he could be the club’s most-capped forward by the end of the contract.

Possibly , but who would they have shafted to get him in the team that many times? QLD have less players to chose from and need to have more so called 'loyalty' but they haven't been so loyal in the last couple of series when they've been losing. It will be interesting to see if Meninga chooses Mitchell for Australia. NSW got the Mitchell non selection right.

If he was. QLDER , I expect he’d have 20 origins under his belt by now.

Yes Chris I am a Roosters supporter .....and regardless of the fact that Josh is a distant relo, I have admired the bloke as a player for some time. I was also a big Fan of Luke Lewis & also Lachlan Coote who both funnily enough played for Penrith.

Nicely said ND (...and you're a Roosters supporter!) ;) Jacko's certainly a very well respected person both on and off the pitch. As a Bulldog supporter I'm certainly glad to have him to the end of his career (and beyond if he chooses a future career path at the Dogs) and I know that those in the Bulldog's community feel likewise. An absolute workhorse and legend for the 'barking beauties'! Go Bulldogs!

I know you said that tongue in cheek, but Josh never wanted to play for any other team. I suspect he may have actually retired if they had not signed the contract extension.

Yes Tom, honest tough country boy. His Grandfather is a solid bloke too . He is related on my wife's side of the family and I despite not being a Canterbury supporter I have followed his career for many years and his parents and Grandparents are mighty proud of him. On the field he is a truly inspirational leader and I do not think he receives the accolades he should from the media in regard to his consistency as a player & team leader.

well done Canterbury, Josh never wanted to play for any other team . He is a solid reliable player and if you have a look at his stats they are pretty impressive and very consistent. He is in that Luke Ricketson, Mitch Aubison mould , solid reliable and a one club man. He is a highly inspirational team leader and the Club has made the right move in extending his contract

Josh Jackson is possibly the most honest player going around. Always puts in at 100%. He reminds me of some of the greats of a bygone era. Whilst I’d love to see him at my club, he is a Dogs man through thick and thin and deserves to see out his career there. Besides could you even imagine him playing anywhere else?

He should have said ... “Thanks for the offer but I’m going to test the market”.
