Dismal start to the season proves costly for Kurz as Victory show head coach the door

By The Roar / Editor

Melbourne Victory have reportedly sacked coach Marco Kurz just 13 games into his tenure at the traditional A-League powerhouse.

Victory are sixth on the ladder but have won only four games this season and are coming off a 3-2 loss to lowly Central Coast – in which Kurz was shown a red card late on for abusing the fourth official.

Prior to the Mariners loss – Victory’s first defeat to the side in more than half a decade – Kurz had seemed to have turned around his side’s early-season woes; a draw with the surging Wellington Phoenix was followed by a narrow derby win over Melbourne City and a 4-0 thumping of the Jets.

However, Sunday’s loss and red card – for which Kurz was handed a one-match suspension – were enough for the Victory board to axe their new coach half a season into his stint at the club.

Former Adelaide United coach German Kurz, 50, took over the reins at the Victory after Kevin Muscat’s long and successful tenure, and leaves Melbourne with a poor W-D-L record; just four wins, three draws and six losses.

That record is despite bringing in a number of high-profile signings prior to the 2019-20 A-League season, including Socceroos Robbie Kruse and Andrew Nabbout, although injuries have been an issue for the side.

With Kurz’s main assistant, Filip Tapalovic, also headed for the exit, it will be left to one of the remaining assistants from the Muscat era, Carlos Salvachua, to take over as interim coach.

Victory’s next fixture is this Friday night, when they make the trip to Adelaide to take on Kurz’s former club.

I’m glad to hear you’d never behave in the same way but your statement was the official deserves to be berated, or worse abused. No they don’t. They deserve to have their flaws pointed out in the hope they can improve themselves and in time if they can’t and there’s a better option, then yes axed. To suggest they deserve abuse is plain wrong. Professional coaches do not lose their jobs because of inept officials, generally they lose their jobs because over a sustained period of time they show themselves or the players they’ve chosen not to be good enough. My experience, and yours for that matter, doesn’t come into it. Officials do not deserve to be subjected to sustained, systematic and often tactical abuse. I stand by my statement, if you really believe that you should never have been involved in sport. Melbourne Victory didn’t lose that game because of Ams, they lost it because their forwards were not good enough to score enough goals with the many gilt edged chances they had and because Broxham displayed poor decision making for the first and third CCM goals. Do I have any comprehension of Kurz’s coaching experience, happy to corrected but I think he’s been coach of at least 4 clubs where he hasn’t been good enough to last 15 games. I wonder if it’s cause of all those bad refs, or could it be Kurz isn’t good enough? My bet is he believes it’s the refs.

Do you have any comprehension of the experience Kurtz has? And affording the term.professional to out officials is very generous. Look at what Ams turned that Mariners game into. There are some really talented young refs getting about in the NPL and they should be given their opportunity. I can only hope that our new CEO of FFA dispenses with the contracted refs arrangement and goes to a pro/rel arrangement. Ams would never see the top flight again. Players have to earn their place on the pitch, the same arrangement would only be a positive for the refs.

"his Manu will be taken apart regularly by teams like Man City, Liverpool and Barca." Unlikely ManUtd will play Barcelona in competition for some time. But, in the EPL ManUtd has beaten ManCity in the Etihad; drew with Liverpool, which has been the only occasion Liverpool has dropped a point this season. But, don't let fact interrupt you bias.

I should have elaborated on ethos too. Back in the 70s Utd had a cracking side with the likes of Lou Macari, Steve Coppel and Sammy McIlroy who were all United born and bred. Tommy Docherty built that side with the same mindset as mentioned in my previous post. When Dave Sexton took over he stuck to the United way, complimenting United grown talent with the likes of Gordon McQueen and Mickey Thomas and Ray Wilkins. The Man Utd ethos continued in the 80s when the Utd talent was complemented by the likes of Arnold Muhren under Ron Atkinson and when Fergie took over he continued to so the same thing. Utd is not like any other club. They produce loan and sell more youth than just about any other club on the planet. You either fit, understand, identify with the United culture or you don’t. Countless players have said it and Mourinho proved it

Good man Kangas My apologies re Sky Blue comment. If you look at the teams that have been consistently successful over time, they have had a mix of youth and experience. Perfect example is the class of 92 and Cantona. OGS is about to bring in Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and Bruno Fernandez from Sporting Lisbon. He hasn’t just brought anyone, he’s been calculating who will fit the team the ethos and will compliment his young fellas. I have got a fiver that says what OGS is doing is quietly being overseen and mentored by Sir Alex. Before he got injured the cohesion that was developing between McTomminay and Fred was a privilege to watch. Bottom line is that rash decisions, knee jerk reactions and buying just anyone does not work. Patience, calculation and nouse are the key to success

I believe that assumption is the mother of all errors, but I have to ask how much football experience you have and request that your responses be delivered with context, perspective and underpinning knowledge

I have been involved in all aspects of football for over 40 years and I would never behave in the same way as the point of this discussion. But when you consider that we are talking about professional football with a global viewing audience, and what is consumed directly effects the opinions and perceptions of international personnel considering the A-League, the standard of refereeing is laughable. The officials we have are dealing with personnel who have experience way beyond anything Kurt Ams and co.have ever dealt with and when you factor in the likelyhood of reactions like Victory’s, these guys know that their living is on the line and they are victims of gross amateurism. In closing how are we to go about winning over new supporters of the game when all that makes the news is controversy and VAR. I stand by my statement, it’s embarrassing.

I agree. I don't think the refereeing is as bad as some people on here make out. They are somewhat hamstrung by VAR and are left doubting themselves and deferring decisions etc which makes them look incompetent.

Solskjaer's style is a throwback to his playing days. It's antiquated. It will never cut it against teams that sit back. It will work ok against attack-minded teams but his Manu will be taken apart regularly by teams like Man City, Liverpool and Barca. Solskjaer will be gone shortly because, unlike Klopp, he has no reassuring coaching pedigree to insulate him against mediocre results. In fact, his lack of coaching pedigree means he won't even be able to recruit top quality footballers, making his eventual demise even more likely.

Which is why he should just sign for Sydney now and skip the wasted years. He'd excel in the ACL and eventually score a huge deal with Yokohama or Vissel Kobe.

I followed United since Robson Ince Hughes etc. I can accept they are dross because , and for the good of the game.. i don’t really want one team to be all conquering and dominating like United However back to ogs, I don’t see the building that you do, they have probably the worst midfield in the epl, the central defenders are poor . They are 6-8 players away from being near Liverpool. I would think the wolves coach or potch or bielsa are better options then ole .

Please tell me you have nothing to do with managing or coaching any football teams. Yes referees are frustrating and make bad mistakes but if you think that gives anyone the entitlement to berate or abuse them then you need some serious counseling. Of course mistakes are frustrating, but the expression of that frustration every once in a while is very different to the systematic abuse Kurz, Muscat, Arnold and others heap on professionals trying to do their best, to improve themselves, to contribute and maybe even enjoy their job every week. In other leagues there are plenty of bad decisions, I can't comment on the general standard of them compared to the ALeague because I don't watch as many games, but I see plenty of highlights and plenty of decisions I don't agree with. And in answer to your question, there are more ALeague coaches that don't systematically abuse officials than ones that do. Please tell me where you work so I can come and scream vile abuse at you for miss-spelling a word or serving my coffee cooler than expected. @Andy from Adelaide same applies to you. Kurz's abuse isn't passion, it's years of conditioning to do so either in the belief extra pressure on officials makes more calls come your way or, more likely, shifting the blame from his own deficiencies in coaching or his players in skill.

If you think our officials are not worthy of abuse or berating you have had one heck of a holiday. The Australian officials embarrass our league. They are an absolute abomination. You can only wonder what foreigners think when they come here. Watch an EPL game and tell me how prominent the ref is. In most cases you hardly know he or she is there. The Plonkers we have here seem to think they should be the star of the show.Tell me which gaffer has not gone ballistic on one of our officials!

Are one of those horrid sky blue supporters? Under Solskjaer United are starting to play football reminiscent of the class of 92. Look below the surface, the comment from Alan Shearer said it all, “Look at the football these kids are playing, and they are kids. What Solskjaer is building is nothing short of impressive”. And just in case you support Liverpool, think about it Klopp didn’t get success immediately either. Liverpool had the football nouse to give him time for cohesion and building. Same applies to Espirito Santo at Wolves. Too many clubs have become, rash inpatient and bereft of good football nouse. It’s a sad and sorry situation
