National anthem won't be played at NRL All Stars match

By Matt Encarnacion / Wire

The ARL Commission has scrapped the national anthem at the annual All Stars match on the advice of the game’s indigenous players.

The decision was ticked off after a meeting on Thursday between the ARLC and the NRL, and included consultation from the ARL Indigenous Council.

It comes a year after a number of indigenous players had opted not to sing the anthem during the clash with the Maori All stars team.

“The All Stars game was created as a celebration of indigenous players and their culture,” ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said.

“We have listened to our players’ concerns that the words of the anthem do not represent them or their families and does not include an acknowledgement of First Nations people.

“We respect their wishes and have agreed that the anthem will not be played at the All Stars match on February 22.”

The move has been described by some as the game’s Colin Kaepernick moment, in reference to the former NFL star who knelt during the US anthem in 2016.

He was protesting against the treatment of African American people in the United States.

Indigenous star Latrell Mitchell posted a photo on Thursday of him leading the indigenous war cry last year alongside another of Kaepernick in TIME magazine.

Mitchell controversially claimed NSW selectors “went funny” on him and other indigenous teammates after they chose not to sing the anthem in game one last year.

Meanwhile, the ARLC has also provisionally signed off on the introduction of a captain’s challenge for the 2020 NRL season.

Only the captain, or a second player nominated should the skipper be off the field, are allowed to challenge calls that involve a structured restart.

Teams are granted one unsuccessful challenge per game.

The rule change will be trialled during the traditional Charity Shield trial between St George Illawarra and South Sydney on February 29 in Mudgee.

Clubs, players and broadcast partners will be consulted before the commission makes a final verdict before the start of the season.

Don’t you Rellum “think that traditional burning of the bush is a great idea” and the only solution to reducing these devastating bushfires? Australians bush fuel has been allowed to grow without taking the proper evasive measures, as an example, the back burning that should have been done yearly and over the last 5 years, was only reduced by 20% of what it should have been. This was due to conservationists blocking legislation throughout Australia, it’s all there and has been proven.

I agree 100% KenW, I have no problem with either changing any parts of the anthems wording (to suit all) and/or including any indigenous verses into our anthem but, what's holding this up?

Simplest version? There has been a suggestion that replacing that line with "for we are one and free" would do the job. I would think a minor change like that would be easy to digest for all. There have been bigger suggestions including a change to that line + a new 2nd verse which references the long history of Indigenous people. Personally I think that's a good idea and would probably have minimal impact on anyone as well, especially when most couldn't recite the current 2nd verse anyway.... I've not seen any serious suggestions that it should be sung in Indigenous languages. While I think it works well for the Kiwi anthem, the fragmentation of Indigenous languages here likely makes that impossible and bound to leave people feeling excluded.

No Rellum. Our diggers fought and died for our flag which is more representative of nationalism than the national anthem. At the time they sang "God Save the Queen" because Australia was lacking in a sense of national identity on the world stage and had no anthem of their own to express their own nationalistic pride or sense of unity. I'd like to think that they would have been just as proud to sing a national anthem that better represented the nation they fought and died for instead of one that represented a foreign power that first imprisoned Australians and then later exploited Australian soldiers as cannon fodder without any true concern for their welfare. You've had a long holiday mate. It's good to see you back. If you missed the News Flash I'm a "North Korean" like you now. ;-)

I have major issues with the Anthem being played at any Anzac day event. That is far to much nationalism for a day when we are meant to be remembering all the suffering people went through in our name.

Perhaps it’s the fact that him and his loudmouth mate hijacked one of the biggest games of the year for their own political agenda. And then played like a couple of crumpets, and were quite rightly dropped. But of course it’s all about raycism , isn’t it. You’re a clown Dug , perhaps you and a couple of ya big tuff anttifa buddies should be out prowling for old men such as Andrew Bolt , to beat up.

KenW ok, so what should our anthem edited edition be? I'm sure that the majority of Australians would have no problem with that! But and If the indigenous people of Australia want an indigenous bit put into the current anthem, lets go and stop whinging, moaning and complaining every time for attention and divisiveness "LETS DO IT"! Its easier to be at conflict with this than solve the issue, that is why it keeps going on and hanging on! Remember this, that the Australian Aboriginal languages, is a family of some 200 to 300 Indigenous languages spoken in Australia and a few small offshore islands by approximately 649,200 people (as calculated by the 2016 Census) who reported being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin in 2016, 91% were of Aboriginal origin, 5% were of Torres Strait Islander origin, and 4.1% reported being of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin.

Higgo, firstly “I have read allot of your crap” the feeling is mutual as is this post of yours! If the “TRUTH AND REALITY HURTS YOU AND OTHERS” then “BAD LUCK”! This national anthem, pay the rent, stolen land etc etc projected by the “FEW ONLY” which has never ever been a part of the Bunnies and/or the RL, NRL ever, is very unfortunate and damaging! I’ve been following the Bunnies for over 55 years mate, Sattler, Simms, Longbottom, Churchill etc etc were my heroes and in NO instance did these sort of issues ever come up with these legends, they were pure champions and sports elites, politics was never ever their agendas and that is how sport should be and not like sport has been used for divisiveness and conflict! The Bunnies are doing wonderful things with the indigenous people (which is a joint effort between white and black Australians). What this anthem nonsense is starting “IS NOT GOOD FOR THE NRL” as I and many fans thought that we were way above that! This is very unfortunate and it will be the beginning of the end of the NRL if this continues and we don’t unite and get over these divisive and racial nonsense! If you really want to know what established indigenous leaders like “Nyunggai Warren Mundine” philosophies and goals are, then read this “It irritates me that every time it comes up, every year, you get the same old people…trying to divide the country when we should be actually trying to work together”

Good on you Papi! That is exactly my ideology and what I mean! Its amazing that "The Roar" gets so "SENSITIVE" and overlooks what is going on within the NRL and the racial problems that are surfacing in the last few years, that were NOT in the NRL before!! Without letting people of different opinion(s) express themselves with actions like these "This comment has been removed for breaching The Roar’s comments policy" which my comment was NOT racial!

This is a discussion about Australia’s identity - why isn’t this relevant? “Belligerent” & “disgraceful” - as you say. Why? For linking this article & comments to Australia’s colonial history? “Gutter tactics” - for remembering the past? Much much easier to whitewash the past to save you some discomfort, clearly.

Hi Nat, I think he is referring to the KARI (Indigenous Support Services) jersey sponsorship, ground advertising and give aways. I could be wrong though.
