Teen sensation Sam Walsh is one of three new players in Carlton’s seven-player leadership group for the 2020 AFL season.
The 19-year-old midfielder and defenders Jacob Weitering and Liam Jones join Blues co-captains Sam Docherty and Patrick Cripps and veterans Marc Murphy and Ed Curnow in the group, chosen by their teammates.
Reigning AFL Rising Star Walsh was the number one pick in the 2018 draft, while 22-year-old Weitering is entering his fifth season in the AFL.
Jones, 28, has enjoyed a career resurgence since moving into a defensive role in 2017.
“Weiters, Jonesy and Walshy are exceptional leaders in everything they do, whether it be on the training track, during games and living the values of our football club – that is why they have earned their place in the leadership group,” Docherty said.
Veteran Kade Simpson has decided to step aside from the group for 2020.

“Every chance as a player it could fail” or every chance as a player it could succeed. I hope the opposition coaches think the same as you Jonboy and don’t put one of their good defenders on Eddie. If he doesn’t perform to the standards the club wants then I am sure he will be playing at the Northern Blues but if he can kick a couple of goals a game then he will have done his job.

Doesn’t ring a bell or strike a chord with me, your holiness. Did I miss much?

When the blues have a massive small forward shaped hole in their list why not have Betts play as well as mentor? What is the downside? I would call 30 goals a pass mark for him, on that basis the chances it "fails"are less than the chances it doesn't. Why is putting Walsh, a player who has demonstrated his leadership qualities ever since he walked into the club, into the leadership group "stupid"? The kid is already leading and having a massive impact on the other under 22 players why not reward his effort?

Betts should have been appointed as a coach and mentor, not as a player. Every chance as a player it could fail. Just my opinion, Crows fans won't be to concerned. Like wise with Walsh, stupid decision for mine. But of course you think it will help his progress.

"there really is no point in debating Carlton with you" Only because you can't refute the facts. FWIW Betts was 32 when we recruited him and we don't have any first year players in our leadership group. Further on the recruitment of Betts last year he kicked 11 more goals than our leading goal kicker and 21 more than our best small forward - sure he isn't a long term on field investment but he is a big step up from what we had and the knowledge he is passing on to his team mates is invaluable.

Your terribly biased macca, there really is no point in debating Carlton with you because i have never known you to not agree with any other opinion or any club decision at all. When your club recruits 33 yo hasbeens places first year players in leadership groups are bad decisions that won't lift the club of the bottom. It is like the ABC if you just keep agreeing with one another nothing changes, you stay on the bottom. Like Don at Freo.

1 good game against weak opposition? How about his 29 touches, 5 tackles, 4 clearances and a goal against the Tigers? Or 31 possessions, 7 tackles, 5 clearances and a goal against the Cats? He had more than 28 possessions or more in more than half his games last year - but sure it was just 1 good game. As for Betts he kicked multiple goals against the Hawks, North, Saints (Twice), Lions, Eagles, Demons, Giants & Tigers - but he only played well against the Suns.

One good game against weak opposition freo, similar to Ballantyne who averaged 1-2 good games a year in his last 4 years. Like Betts 2 great games last year 12 goals against GCS. but they will get a game at weak clubs, but they are old and past it for mine. Eddie left because he would not of got a game at Adelaide this year, ask any crow fan that.

" Murphy can find the ball but they don’t hurt the opposition or impact games." There was a game last year where the blues were without Cripps, & McKay and lost C Curnow in the first few minutes Maurphy had 34 touches, 3 tackles, 7 clearances and kicked the match winning goal in the dying seconds - who was that against again? How many clubs only have 3-4 players in their leadership group

I find that hard to believe, gotta pass it through the BSI

Yeah, Marc Murphy.

So tell me Jonboy, what problems having 6+ in a leadership group cause a club. As long as the players agree and are happy with their leadership group I see no problems at all.

Nice, but I know who I would take and I suspect you would choose the same man.

3-4 is plenty for a leadership group. Conca should not be in the leadership group full stop,In his first year. Conca is similar to Murphy can find the ball but they don't hurt the opposition or impact games. I don't think Conca is best 22 and Murphy was a handy player in years gone bye, Both B graders now for me. Cerra and Brayshaw both had better first years than last year. Brayshaw is touted as a future leader but it is way to early yet to take a role.

Murphy has played 4 more games than Boak and has only received 6 less Brownlow votes than Boak. Boak is a 2 time AA, Murphy 1. Murphy has won the AFLCA while Boak hasn’t. So if Murphy is an absolute spud then Boak isn’t much better.

2 of Freo’s leadership group have only been there 2 & 1 years - Hamling & Conca. Don’t they have any other players who have been there longer than them worthy of leadership?

That makes two of us, happy to let the male model run around and pick up cheapies. I didn't know that about Cripps, sounds like something he needs to work on, usually it's hard to take the inside bulls because they go and find there own ball.

Cripps had 12 possessions against the Giants when tagged by De Boer and 11 against the Bombers when tagged by Dylan Clarke. He was also kept to 17 possessions against the Swans the year before when tagged. It can be done. As for Murphy last year he had 9 of 19 games where he had 28 possessions or more and only had 1 game (where he got injured early against the Giants) where he had less than 20 possessions. Under Teague (where he returned to playing more midfield minutes) he averaged 30.33 possessions and 5.5 clearances over 9 games. If you think that is the efforts of a "spud" who isn't worth tagging I'd be more than happy for Murphy to run free.
