FFA suspends grassroots football as Wellington Phoenix head to Australia

By News / Wire

Wellington Phoenix are coming to Australia to complete their A-League season but the coronavirus pandemic has wiped out grassroots football for at least a month.

Wellington officials announced on Tuesday players and officials will fly to Sydney on Wednesday after receiving assurances they will be able to train during a mandatory isolation period after their arrival.

Phoenix agreed on Monday to play out the remainder of the season in Australia, which was the only way for the league to be completed under new travel restrictions during the virus outbreak.

After delaying their travel plans due to concerns the team might not be able to train during their 14-day quarantine, a club statement on Tuesday afternoon confirmed the club’s travel plans were back on.

“The decision to travel to Sydney in an attempt to complete this season, was made as a club,” Phoenix general manager David Dome said.

“We have discussed this amongst ourselves, consulted with health professionals and government bodies in Australia and New Zealand and taken all possible precautions to ensure those travelling are given the best protection possible.

“We are also conscious that the situation is constantly evolving and it may all change again tomorrow, but we are making this decision with the best information we have available at this time.”

It’s understood the club have identified an isolated training facility and given a green light by NSW Health to use it during their quarantine period.

Both the Phoenix and Melbourne Victory, who have begun self-isolation after returning from Wellington on Monday, will have two games rescheduled.

Dome said there hadn’t been a single complaint from the players and he expected the entire squad to travel, including defender Luke DeVere, whose wife is expected to give birth this month.

While the A-League will continue, there’s no such luck for hundreds of thousands of players across the country with the FFA announcing from Wednesday all grassroots competitions and training will be suspended until at least April 14.

“Today, more schools, universities and also public sporting facilities have announced that they will be closing so we have had to respond quickly to this,” FFA chief executive James Johnson said.

“It is very regrettable that grassroots football will not proceed for the next month, but as a good and responsible citizen, we recognise that our game of approximately 1.96 million participants has a significant role to play in slowing the spread of the virus.”

Well, like I said to Kanggas, contact the FFA and tell them to stop their supposed ludicrous plan (in your opinions). I can't stop them. Maybe if enough people complain, they'll stop it? I honestly don't know if they'll listen though.

You're all for isolation but happy for the A-league to go ahead? It's both "applicable and practical " to cease all sporting competitions. That way we can maximise the chance of keeping the essential work force at work

No I haven't Fadida. I'm all for isolation measures where applicable and practical. But the reality is we all need jobs and the country still needs an economy to run. If I refuse to go to work because of fears over Covid-19, firstly, that means I don't get paid, secondly, my employer might feel inclined to sack me...especially as they're already trying to limit potential for the staff to contract Covid-19, and even looking into offering free flu shots.

You have completely diminished the risks of ignoring the need for social isolation. You have completely dismissed the lives of the elderly. For a game. There is the potential for an A-league player to die, there is at least one in remission for cancer. Young people still end up in ICU btw. An A-league player exposed because he's still training or playing may end up in ICU, probably live, but deny another person who's tried to do the right thing a chance to live.... Stay home everyone. I'd love to but will be neck deep in corona virus again tonight. Scr3w the A-league

Reading Micko's comments on this forum usually makes me laugh at his ignorance about football culture. But, reading his comments on this issue makes me angry and frustrated at his ignorance. My only hope is that the people who intentionally don't take precautions to reduce the spread of this infection are the first to go. Unfortunately, it's more likely the ignorant people will infect their elderly family or extended family & those innocent victims will be the first to go. Whether it's anti-vaxxers or Climate Change Deniers or this issue. Ignorance & selfishness. Becoming more apparent in 21st century Australia.

I'm not criticising elderly people, I'm merely responding to Kanggas' hyperbole that an A League player is possibly going to be a Covid-19 fatality. I acknowledge that elderly people are more vulnerable to these illnesses.

Like the players you lack the education on the issue to have an informed opinion. Like the players you shouldn't be given a choice. Non essential activities and businesses must close. The lives of the estimated 50-150k Australians that may soon be lost are far more important than playing football.

How do these obviously unimportant elderly people get COVID 19 Micko? From exposure to others, often healthy hosts. Sympathies to you when your parent/grandparents dies in the coming weeks. If only we'd slowed transmission by social isolation, the only way to control this. We would have had an ICU bed for them. Because the government have been so negligent in their response, transmission is going at a phenomenal rate, and will only worsen. You realise that once ICUs are full that younger people who need the beds for non COVID issues won't get them?

I actually agree. FFA have made the right decision with grassroots, based on the need for social isolation. Unfortunately logic has gone out of the window when it comes to the A-league. Let’s make this quite clear, while the risks to younger people are lower, there are still significant risks, yet here we are, ludicrously going ahead, players going through airports and being in close contact. By next week I’d expect schools to be shut and non essential businesses closing, gatherings of more than 10 people banned. The government have showed appalling decision making, and FFA have joined in. Judging by what I have seen at work these last 2 days the $hit is getting very very real. Worrying about finishing a football season? Worry about living to the end of the football season. Stay home everyone

Micko compared world health pandemic to driving a car. Spain doesn’t go into 15 day lockdown because of car accidents Micko . Micko says “Living in a society means running an economy with logical risks we have to take in life “. Logical yes ,, people playing soccer games during a pandemic is not logical . Logical is following isolation policies, don’t do unnecessary things in the community and re assess in a month or 3 -6 months to see where we at health wise . Australia has been warned and has a chance to break the curve as they say I can’t help you Micko . I’m not engaging in debate, it’s people like you that make me sad for humanity my job which involved some high risk people(. Not old people) whose lives depend on the Micko s of Australia to contribute to common sense health precautions. I ask Australia to not be like Micko , tv sport is unnecessary and it just has to be abandoned for now .

No one has a gun to the A League players' heads. Ring the FFA up and demand it be cancelled if it bothers you. Technically my industry isn't absolutely essential to human life so we should shut down according to you. Living in a society means running an economy with logical risks we have to take in life. You could die driving home from work even! Over 1000 of us die every year on Australian roads! I hope you don't drive a car!

Micko says the A league must go on ,, Aussies deserve to see our soccer teams play to fulfill a contract with fox .. Micko loves fox sports and he can’t go without sport on tv for a while. He doesn’t care about world health pandemics because so far only old people have died apparently .... it’s the elderly fault for being old , they should have chose to play sport and not got old , those oldies need to go away , so Micko can watch sport on tv Does Micko know that old people have caught the virus from young people ? Derrr Micko ... see the link there.. don’t do unnecessary things , like play ef fing soccer . Meanwhile in Spain a 21 soccer coach dies from coronavirus. Spain , is in lockdown Micko , I wonder if Spain had a warning, they might have called la Liga and unnecessary things off 3 months ago ... Micko says no can’t happen in Australia The a league must go on , just so Micko can try to win a debate, next up Micko defies world health organisation as not understanding Australia is different mate. Aussie sportsman don’t care if they pass this deadly virus around , he thinks it’s reall Aussie to share things with relatives .. players wives passing on the virus to their girlfriend who Mum is in chemo etc . Micko tells it like it is Australia... eff you world says micko. New York 1800 schools are about to shutdown... does that signal to Micko , that a crisis is occurring, even rich countries are affected,, maybe if they had warnings like Australia does now . Micko would prefer to win an argument with me , then take this stuff seriously. Next up Micko tells me , that ww2 wasn’t that serious because only young men died and polio was not a big deal .

Once again you go off with hyperbole and an obnoxious attitude without thinking. The deaths from Corona Virus are the usual suspects: the elderly, frail and very sick. Assuming an A League player will die of Corona Virus is ridiculous! Are you refusing to go to work? What if one of your coworkers or clients get sick and you get it? Are you going to try sue your employer? This ridiculous hyperbole has to stop! No one is forcing these A League players to do anything they don’t want to do. We all have to interact with each other. If you suspect you have it, or might’ve been around someone who got it, DON’T go near elderly, frail, sick family/friends/acquaintances. THESE are the people who will be Corona Virus fatalities, NOT the average person on the street! Just for you knucklehead here is the info: Australian Covid-19 fatalities as of 17/3/20 :5 (age of victims: 90,77,95,82,78)

You are the most clue less. F k sake It’s sport fruit loop . Unnecessary in a pandemic. There’s already been a death in Spain of a cosch . Ding ding Micko wake up The warning signs say , don’t do unnecessary things to expose yourself to contacting a bad virus which may kill you or your mother or wife in chemotherapy , or child with poor immunity Etc This is a complex subject way above your cognitive ability . Locking ourselves in our homes would be ideal , but not totally practical yet ,, but that’s what is happening in Spain as we speak . 15 day lockdown Apology for the strong language, but wake up . Sport doesn’t matter for now . It will be there when the world recovers . I’m done with trying to help you. I hope you and your family are safe .... I’ll be here in Nsw trying to help the Mickos of Nsw get back on their feet if they are still breathing . Enjoy your A league guys while the doctors makes a choice between you or someone else for treatment.

Doing anything is dangerous by that logic! We should all lock ourselves in our homes! I’m coming in to close proximity to around 50 fellow employees daily. As far as I’m aware, all the big shopping centres are still open, as well as cinemas, theatres etc. What should they do? You still ducking down to Coles or Woolies to grab stuff? Are they open still?
