Hot Sharks beat Cowboys in thriller

By Ed Jackson / Wire

A pregame temperature check drama hasn’t stopped Cronulla notching a 26-16 win over North Queensland to claim their first NRL victory of 2020.

The Sharks got one over former player Valentine Holmes as they secured a thrilling 26-16 victory over North Queensland in Townsville on Saturday night.

The win came after six members of the Sharks team, including halves Shaun Johnson and Matt Moylan, all failed pre-game temperature checks at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

All of the players subsequently passed a second test and after withstanding an opening barrage by the Cowboys, the Sharks powered to a deserved five tries to three win.

Centre Jesse Ramien, the player of the match, and winger Ronaldo Mulitano scored doubles for the Sharks with Briton Nikora also notching a four-pointer for the visitors.

Kyle Feldt grabbed a double of his own for the Cowboys, including a 75m breakaway effort in the second half, with Justin O’Neill the other tryscorer for the home team.

Both teams also had tries denied by the bunker, with Ramien having an effort scratched just before halftime while a potentially vital effort by Esan Masters in the second half for the Cowboys was ruled out after the officials spotted a knock-on by Shane Wright.

“It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win for us at this point of our season,” Sharks coach John Morris said.

“I’m just real proud of the boys that they kept their nose in front and a really good commitment in defence.

“They worked real hard for each other and took away a valuable two points for our season.”

Holmes, facing the Sharks for the first time since he walked out on the club in 2018 to pursue an ultimately unsuccessful NFL career, could only manage 101 running metres and made three errors.

He wasn’t the only Cowboy to be sloppy with the hosts making 18 errors to the Sharks’ nine and only completing 24 of 41 sets.

The hosts, who were already coming into the game without wrecking ball forward Jason Taumalolo (knee) and Coen Hess (ankle), lost two more forwards in the opening half.

Backrower Mitchell Dunn failed a head injury assessment while John Asiata didn’t feature in the second half after injuring a knee late in the first term.

Frustrated Cowboys coach Paul Green admitted his team’s crucial mistakes had proven costly.

“We created enough opportunities to win the game but at different times we weren’t good enough to be tough enough to defend it either,” Green said.

“I can’t fault their effort…but we didn’t play a smart enough game to get the reward for all that effort we put in.

“It’s just a frustrating loss because we were a fair way off our best there at times.”

Green will be eager for his team to bounce back when they play the Warriors at Central Coast Stadium on Friday, while the Sharks face St George Illawarra at Campbelltown Stadium next Sunday.

As an act of desperation,I'll take the win. But ugly wins don't send me into any sort of excited lather. The Narks will have to handle a darn side better ,if they want to reach the pointy end of the season. 5.5 out of 10.

Okay Albo, I suspect every try is down to some error whether in defence or something you did in attack. I certainly believe the Sharks got the for a lot of reasons other than JT13 being out. Anyway I have to live with the fact things happened that only usually occur once every couple of decades and somehow my side came out on the losing end. It’s a pandemic Eels are winning the Comp, Panthers won without Cleary, Titans had a win and Broncos lost by a record all on the same weekend? Go figure.

This what I want to happen. Win every game possible. Win the minor premIership of course and then GF. Someone has to why not our Cowboys? Please I’m trying for extreme positivity Jimmmy LOL don’t answer that question. Seriously thou I think the clubs winning consistently have that attitude and so do their supporters. We can’t expect to be middle of the road at least not accepting that this early of the season. A few years ago JT, Scott out for the season I still believed we could make and win finals. The supposed good teams will lose players and games. The Cowboys can beat them if they really want it bad enough and stay fit. Any team can IMO.

Yes, they didn’t deserve to win with a stack of silly errors. I just don’t agree “ The red hot Sharks “ ? it was a game were almost everything went wrong and the Sharks benefited from the misfortune. I actually think the ref maybe didn’t penalise Johnson because he thought the Cowboys were a certainty to score. The Cowboys butchered the advantage and then the Sharks score? 10-12 point turn around. Sort of summed up the game when 2 Cowboys having a go for the same ball deny themselves and the team a try. Another 6 point moment. They say you make your own luck. Last night it was more Cowboys made their own bad luck. I’ve seen enough of Shaun Johnson’s kicking game to realise the grubber behind the winger try was a 1 in 50 moment.

Come on Rob ! The Cows only scored their three tries from awful Sharks errors ( Katoa x 2 & Kennedy) , and if they were playing a better side than the fumbling ” over heated” Sharks, it could have been cricket score. They need a lot more than they showed last night. If JT13 isn’t playing , I automatically rule out a Cows win against any opposition in the tipping comps. When I heard before the game that 6 Sharks players might be ruled out , I thought of changing my tip …for about 2 seconds. Then I remembered JT13 was out. I’m with jimmy here, I think scraping into the 8 will be great result for the Cows this season.

At least Marsters will look to off load, which is something a lot of our players refuse to do ( or more probably are not allowed to ). He just needs to learn the time and place to do it. Plus we need to make sure someone always follows him and Molo around.

I feel for young Dunn. He’s got a long neck and the knock he got was just so unlucky as he was falling in the tackle. The copped a really unlucky injury last year falling also. Just when the kid gets an opportunity he unfortunately gets an injury. I thought Masters was one of the boys really playing well. I know we all got annoyed that the off load that turned over possession was right when we didn’t want it but the support player Robson did a Ninja turtle move to avoid catching it allowing the Sharks to fall on the ball. Can you captain challenge offside? Fair dinkum Johnson was so far offside in Ramien run away try it wasn’t funny. Johnson picks up the lose ball.

Did Cows deserve to win ? Simply and definitively no. It was 5 tries to three...2 (10 points) were from Katoa errors and the other from rookie Mulitalo poor positional read..you’ll be better when your main man comes back for sure but the score pretty much reflected the difference last night.

I agree totally on that game. We could have won it . We did really try but as you say errors and poor decisions cost us. We are better for sure with Hess and JT13 but better than, Storm, Parra, Roosters, Raiders, Manly? I don't think so. The Sharks don't look top five to me so no guide there. So what do I think will happen. ?? We will fight out for 7th or 8th, Why ? I don't think our pack is up to any more. We are short one top notch prop, plus our halves are not settled and we lack strike power in our backs. ( although we may bring in that gifted kid you talk about). What do I want to happen?? We win every game, take the minor premiership and win the GF. Don't confuse what I think is the state of play with what I would like it to be.

Jimmmy why do you always think we can’t top5 more hope we can scrape into the 8 hope? It’s 2-2 with the 2 guns coming back soon. They also have a freakishly gifted kid sitting waiting. That game was diabolical and I didn’t think we got beat as much as we just couldn’t take a trick and invented ways to let the Sharks win.

That’s as frustrating as it gets. Sharks get 2 tries from poorly defend but essentially fortunate bounces from kicks in hope, 1 try from a kid dropping a ball fortunately backwards into tackler (Drinkwater’s leg) and goes straight to Ramien . Another try where Val Holmes completely murders a 2 man overlap with the only defender in no mans land. That was ego from Holmes throwing a bullet cut out pass when O’Neil was going through a hole to stroll over. As dad always said “showboating will bit you on the a...”I still Couldn’t believe the ball gets deflected enough to cause Hampton to drop the ball straight into a Shark players lap and they can then go 95m to score with Holmes and Drinkwater both tackling no one. All I can remember is Holmes running 95m in a Sharks jersey interception against the Cowboys to win a game at Shark park? Losing Hess before kickoff was bad but then having two Backrowers going off injured? The comical Wright getting a desperate touch on the ball to deny his fellow team mate a certain try beside the post was the icing on the cake. Did Hess suddenly feel sick when Green put pensioner Cooper straight back into the starting side? McGuire played his best game but I’m worried I just seen a lot of player having a bad day and has beens around him? Clifford is a smart strong kicking 7 with a good pass and solid D. Drinkwater is a touch footballer that struggles in D especially one on one when tired. 9’s suited him but he’s got a bit off work to do. Green needs to learn when players are done, not going to improve but slowly dying in front of you it time to move on, not bring out the Zimmer frame, oxygen bottle and strapping tape. The Sharks are a bogey team not a better team. Did they deserve to win ? Well the Cowboys were doing everything they could to make it happen from coach to fullback.

I agree , but i never thought we could go top five . All i want is for us to improve as we go along. That should put us somewhere between 7 and 10. Make the finals and who knows . Improving the roster. Well that's gonna take a bit longer.

Making up the numbers this year for both unfortunately..don’t have the rosters and most importantly the inert discipline to stay with the top 5..every win savoured as if it’s the last.

Wasn't pretty jimmmy. Poor handling killed the multiple chances the Sharks kept offering up. Agree about Molo and Moose played well but it shows the importance of JT13 to open the middle up. After my last 2wks, at least you guys were in it. What can you say about Ramien? In that mood, he'll destoy most opposition centers. Mulitalo might find himself in rep honours soon enough. I do have concerns over Johnson and Moylan. Is it just me or have both slowed up significantly? Cronk summed up Johnson quite well, he just plays at one speed now, not fast but not slow. He looks like he's bulked up and lost 5 yards of pace. I'll give Moylan soke grace coming off injury be he also let play run past him a few times as well.

Mmm not really what we wanted . 24 from 41 is awful and some really dumb ones in there like Marsters trying an off load in our own half after we had just got back to within 4 points. I thought the effort was good overall. No Hess, no JT13 ,Dunn off early , then Asiata. Positives? Molo , he has been huge for us, and he can offload. Love him. Clifford, i really thought he played well. Without Morgs he is running things and looked good. Kicking and passing fine but he needs to run a bit more. Robson, the more I see of him the more I like. He needs a rest but so what , he's young and will get tougher. His passing is top notch. Downsides? Everyone had a mistake in them , not good at all. Granville is about finished. His key was his speed off the mark and his judgement . Both seem gone. Drinkwater, just can't tackle. Clifford is getting better and better in D , Josh is not. Val, i am loathe to be too critical because he wasn't woeful but his effort is 20% off. The effort plays make a FB . Tommy T , Teddy , even Pappy from the Storm make the effort. Val, not yet. Plus he needs to play heads up . Sure a set play is fine but when it's not working adjust. ONeill would have a couple more trys this year if Val looked at what is unfolding instead of following 'the plan. Hampton, really I can't blame him too much for being short but it's an issue. Every team will kick to that wing If they have a Fergo or Vunivalu. We ' could ' have won that game so onward and upward.
