Brisbane Roar and Robbie Fowler part ways

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Brisbane Roar and coach Robbie Fowler have parted ways, with the Liverpool legend not returning to the A-League club.

Fowler’s future has been in doubt since he returned home to England after the competition was halted in March due to the COVID-19 crisis.

When the Roar returned to training last week, Fowler and assistant Tony Grant were still in the United Kingdom with no plans on when they were to return to Australia.

In an interview with English television show Soccer AM recently, Fowler said he felt he was “not a priority” for the club and no flight arrangements had been made for either he or Grant.
The ex-England striker took over at the Roar as John Aloisi’s successor.

Taking over in the middle of last year, Fowler overhauled the Roar’s squad and after a slow start lifted them to fourth on the ladder before the league’s suspension.

In 22 matches in charge, Fowler led the Roar to 10 wins, five draws and seven losses in what was his first full-time appointment as head coach since the end of his illustrious playing career.

Fowler has been linked to the vacancy at English second-tier club Birmingham City in recent weeks.

Right-hand man Grant, who played professionally for several English clubs including Everton and Burnley, also won’t be returning to the club.

Former Wales under-21 player Darren Davies, who coached the club between Aloisi and Fowler’s reigns, will step in to coach the team for the remainder of the season alongside ex-Roar midfielder Warren Moon.

The Roar have four regular-season fixtures remaining in the 2019-20 campaign, which is due to resume on July 16.

i think he was being serious, these Queenslanders certainly have a funny idea of an ‘entertaining brand of football” because the roar dont play that way

Of course football is in the entertainment business. Is that a serious comment? What is it? Accountancy?

Now that what we all expected has come to pass, it surprises me greatly that the usual line-up of Roar fans who contribute to these pages have not once mentioned whether the players that came to Roar last season will be staying for next season, whenever that may happen. There have been many questions posed during the season just gone by,one being why Roar's best player of recent seasons.keeper Young, was dropped to the bench, poor distribution skills being cited as the cause. Was it an accident that Roar's "resurrection " came with Young's move back into the first team. It surely was no accident that two of the "imports" plus a close season signing made up what became one of the" tightest' back lines in the A-League closing the gaps that were so evident in the Aloisi reign. The ongoing "un-fitness" of the big Welsh striker was another questionable problem for when he was introduced as a substitute the Roar's formation immediately clicked into gear, and we were left to wonder why he could not last 90 minutes ?. That leads us to the best signing made, when the veteran McDonald was lured to the club. He could turn out to be the long term solution to the Roar's coaching vacancies that seem to drag on year after year. Don't know if he has qualifications, but a man with his professional experience could surely fill the job if he wanted a longer term involvement in the game. Cheers jb. '

If Fowler had been deadly serious about coaching the Roar he'd never have gone back to the UK. It turns out he's probably been nagged away.

at the end of the day, its a results business (always has been, always will be) not every team can play a eye pleasing passing game, or an attacking style. Generally english coaches arent known for ‘stylish’ systems or styles. This isnt brisbane under Ange it was brisbane under fowler; which was a tight defence and win a game 1-0, its efficient like a mourinho, allardyce, sean dyche team and there’s nothing wrong with that, different horses for courses…..

Was never going to stay but thought he'd be decent enough to see out the season. I hope he gets all the credit he so clearly desires in the UK.

It’s a little disappointing especially when the season is so close to finishing..This is just my opinion..because we are a world game , with obviously foreign coaches and players this is an example of where A League fans go through so much more emotional roller coasters than fans of AFL and other codes here in Australia will experience in the same way..like I said, just my opinion..this COVID19 has made a real mess of things so it’s understandable Some foreign coaches and players may feel the way they do especially when we are so far away from the rest of the world..

The boring tag sums up the problem with football in this country. AFL has to give 6 points for a score and 1 point if you miss in search of entertainment. Cricket wasn’t entertaining enough so they took it from 5 days to one, and then from one day to three hours. The complexity in football is massive, but if some people can’t see 6 points for a goal and aren’t entertained then they dismiss it as boring. And no; football is NOT in the entertainment business before anyone retorts that lie.

I think I do deny it was boring, but it took a long time to get there. He worked on defence from the get go, as it was all bad last year. And there was a lot of side passing across the back for the first half of the season. That started to change this year, to a point where they were playing an attractive game in the last few. Overall, boring I'd agree. But it was building and did reach a good point. But you have to ask yourself, why did he release D'Aggers?

LH - It'd be great to see a local transition to the top job. Moon is a former Roar player, isn't he?

what reason would Roar have for wanting him gone? Makes no sense?

I'm sure I heard Harry's name get a mention for the Victory job, could be wrong Warren Moon did well in the NPL with Lions FC and was a front runner for many fans when Robbie got the job. Moon's was appointed academy director (head coach I guess) and is now stepping up in the interim anyway. Would love to see him get it next year.

was always going to happen with what transpired with covid. Hopefully they can get a coach who plays a more entertaining brand of football, not the drivel that borler i mean fowler coached. bleiberg? kosmina anyone? both are living in qld and would probably be cheap

There’s been no confirmation that Roar let Fowler go but you’re happy to speculate on that?

Moon/Davies are taking the role “jointly” according to Pourre. Not sure what the logic in that is.

Agreed. In hindsight it would have been better going with Moon from the out set
