Broncos' woes overshadow Queensland rivals' slump

By News / Wire

The focus may be on Brisbane’s woeful form but Queensland’s other NRL clubs will be grateful its attracting attention away from them.

While the Broncos are in full-blown crisis mode following last weekend’s loss to the Warriors in Gosford, North Queensland and Gold Coast have also failed to find any form since the competition’s restart in June.

A 42-4 flogging by Parramatta last weekend was the Cowboys’ fourth defeat in five matches since the restart.

In that period Paul Green’s men have conceded 161 points.

The Titans have fared mildly better, ending a 12-month wait for a win over Wests Tigers in round four and beating the hapless Broncos in round seven.

Their 40-10 hammering by Cronulla at CBUS Super Stadium last Saturday is the third heavy defeat for Justin Holbrook’s team since the restart however, along with losses to South Sydney and St George Illawarra.

Those results mean the Titans are still second-last on the ladder, below both of their struggling Queensland rivals.

Brisbane (235), Gold Coast (233) and North Queensland (211) are also the only teams in the competition to have conceded over 200 points.

North Queensland will have the first chance to reclaim some state pride this week when they welcome Sydney Roosters to Townsville on Thursday.

The premiers were defeated in golden point last week by Melbourne – now based in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast due to Victoria’s COVID-19 outbreak – and will be eager to bounce back against the out-of-sorts Cowboys.

Last week’s thriller between the Storm and Roosters showed the standard that the Cowboys need to be striving towards, in the opinion of Cowboys fullback Valentine Holmes.

“The Melbourne and Roosters game, they were going at it literally for the whole 90 minutes or whatever with extra time and goes to show why they’re at the top and why they’re always playing finals,” Holmes said.

“I still believe in the team we have … it’s obviously there in us, we can do it.

“It’s just a lot of effort areas where we need to work on and it’s something that we definitely have to work on.”

I agree Rob . He has never been able to get 2015 out of his mind. He wants everyone to keep playing 2015 footy. He's like Bart Simpson playing Paper, Scissors, Rock.( Good ole Rock always wins) . Well rock never wins if everyone knows you are going to play it. As Smoky Robinson said, 'one day a change is gonna come '. I just hope I'm still around to see it.

Which team has won the least games since the start of 2018? A team that had the service of the best forward in the game and some would argue the best playmaker of his generation. A 2 time GF hooker 5 origin forwards, a couple of premiership winning back with origin experience. A coach that bartered a big pay rise and job security in 2018 whilst arrogantly letting extremely talented youngsters go to other clubs that are now looking forward to years of success? The coach that has had some of the most naturally skilled and talent youngsters based on the way they play 9’s under his nose. Has any player improved his all round game under this coach?

Fafita, Stagg, Turpin and TPJ all being available. Also a rule change that probably didn’t suit them especially coming out of isolation felling comfortable about there pre COVID results. They ran into a fired up Parra and Roosters down on troupes which completely rattled them psychologically IMO. Will Milford be a different player with Fafita riding shotgun or running off his hip? Will Stagg 37 gamer draw a bit of attention and defend a little stronger than Herbie a 10 gamer? Stagg has more than a season of experience on his slightly younger replacement.

I unfortunately don’t watch all games every week except for my Cowboys. It’s hard to stay excited about the game after they have played at this time. I can’t support Green anymore I’ve tried to hang in hoping he could coach talent but I think he’s limited to maybe just tweaking a good team, talking BS and pandering to established players to keep them loyal. He can’t adjust and evolve a team based around the talent at his disposal. He hasn’t improved any individuals IMO. I think the Broncos have a great bunch of young talent that will require a little patience before it comes good. The loss of quality like Fafita, Stagg and Bird can’t be underestimated. Turpin is a good defender and competitor also. The Broncos attack in the last couple of weeks is getting worse because they have 2 running halves playing together. In their frustration to make something happen both are playing little closer to the defensive line? The whole attack is cheating and standing flat after about 15min. I noticed many in the team standing almost level with the dummy half in attack? You can’t move the ball with any fluency with defender in your face. The pressure is compounded and mistakes are happening repeatedly. Hass is barely moving or standing still when catching the ball. The lack of on field leadership has been evident for about 4 years. I’m not sure the coach can make him do it. You can play flat when the defence is back pedaling but playing flat with little momentum is almost impossible. Maybe there attack is practicing against their own back pedaling defensive structures? The young players have lost all confidence in what they’re doing. If they are doubting themselves what chance the team mate beside them? It happens as losses start to mount especially with young players starting to question their ability. Not having any ISC to gain fitness and confidence is effecting all the young players of which the Cowboys and Broncos have a lot of right now IMO. It’s a huge step up. The Titans have continually tried to buy a match winner for overs and have failed to tap into the local talent? Those big $ imports only play for appearance money and generally have a selfish attitude. The depth of the squads talent is also diminished with has beens and left overs making up the numbers. Jarred Hayne, Cartwright, Peachy, are grossly over paid. Procter and Boyd are all probably burning some cash above their ability. Taylor to much to young. Ryan James, Corey Thompson and young Fotauika at least are a start in hopefully a different and smarter direction.

Masters, Drinkwater and McClean (probably not delivering his price tag) are non Queensland boys that have probably been at fault when it comes to defending especially. To be honest the retreating slide serves a purpose when you have speed, strength and size on the edges but the Queensland teams right now are young and physically they are struggling to compete especially over 80min. Parra are an example of the difference between where the Queensland teams and their southern rivals are at.

Yeah , Im just having a whinge day. Defence is mostly attitude and confidence. I really do have trouble with the amount of points the QLD teams are leaking. How can both teams just lose attitude and become so lacking in confidence.?

Don’t wanna jump on a bandwagon but Mango was better than your memory serves. His greatest deficiency was his size under the high ball but he was a 90% player everyday.

I get that Jimmmy. The way I look at it, defence is a team wide attitude. We could point the finger at a few players, well, for a few seasons now for poor efforts in D. It's not forgivable but it's workable. The point I was trying to make is, it actually looks like there's points in the team. If Green can get some attitude in defence across the group, getting a few wins is more likely than before.

Yep. Very much like Pearl said and I commented on above. Simply want to see a reaction. If your game plan has you down by 20-30 points it’s time to stop being a robot. There’s not a hell of a lot to lose at this point.

True Rob, individual Queenslanders are scattered throughout most clubs. However the Cows are the only hope for a team to qualify for this years finals. There chances are extremely slim though.

Last week, I watched the three queensland games. The question was "which was most depressing?". The broncos are at an incredible low ebb. The titans and cowboys are in a similar boat without eliciting anywhere near the same sense of disappointment. The titans can be forgiven a little due to the new coach and injuries. As for the cowboys, I only saw the one game. Without MacLean their pack was light. The only highlights were McGuire and Molo. Everyone else had at least one noticeable issue. Drinkwater only seemed to show up on the left. Clifford was barely noticeable. Feldt seemed flatfooted in defense. Tommy O messed up repeatedly. Oneil I think dropped the ball repeatedly. Taumololo doesn't dominate in defense like he does in attack. Defense needs to function as a form of attack. A high work rate while being overrun isn't a strength. A lot of the forwards made a lot of tackles per unit of time, but after taumololo, mcguire and Molo, none of the other forwards made even 80m (which might be a function of dropped ball, poor halves or gameplan AND a lack of incision). I had hoped with Holmes back, things might make sense. But everything seemed wrong to me. With the broncos, the halves may be terrible, but it at least means that deardon and sullivan may get their shot. And Farnworth, Haas and Coates seem like they're worth extracting from performances that are otherwise car wrecks.

Matt Bowen was a good defender he just didn’t go out off his way if the game was lost or he had plenty of points to play with. Like a bloke that runs just fast enough to stay ahead of the bloke chasing him. Matt was brilliant at doing what he had to when required. If the game was in the balance I’d back Marty to make the tackle, clean up and take an interception to win the game. Matty never wanted to be a hero or hog because he didn’t like the attention. He left the ones with the Egos do there thing. For the record he a supremely gift ball player and kicker of the ball. Much more gifted than we ever really got to see due to his introverted personality.

My advice would be to claim Melbourne as a Queensland team. Footy was much more popular than geography in our house when my son was growing up. He was convinced Melbourne was in QLD. Besides it wouldn't be the first time QLD have claimed players south of Wallangarra.

Couldnt do any worse. I would like both teams to be told to go out and hit . Stuff the controlled tackle. Run in hard , use your shoulder and drop em . TPJ can do, it Carrigan can do it, Glenn can do it . JOE Of an do it. Sure there would be a few misses and a few offload but it has to be better than escorting them up field every set. Somehow the mind set needs to change. Same ole same ole , won't cut it anymore. Both teams need a circuit breaker.

Haha. Love the Gilly/Soward call. Surprises me that he came through the Storm system tackling like that. Suppose it wouldn’t be as much an issue at fullback which would definitely be his best position. In fact a straight swap for Holmes would probably do wonders, but it’s just not gonna happen. Completely agree on the effort side of things. Here’s a game plan for Siebold: Kick on the 1st every set and get some bloody defensive practice in. At least we might gain something.
