Toronto Wolfpack players: 'We haven't been paid for months'

By News / Wire

A number of Toronto Wolfpack players have urged the Rugby Football League to help them as they have now gone three months without pay.

Darcy Lussick, Gareth O’Brien and Gadwin Springer took to Twitter on Monday evening to shine a light on their plights, with Australian prop Lussick saying he was about to be evicted from his home.

In a series of tweets, Lussick said: “3 months with no pay for the players, staff and families of the @TOwolfpack .. #mentalhealth @TheRFL @SuperLeague.

“Technically stranded in UK. No visa so I can’t work, no help getting home to Australia as promised. About to be evicted from my house. A lot of people have it a lot worse then me but this situation has gone too far now. @TheRFL.

“@TheRFL when are you going to step in and help the welfare of players who are contracted to your competition?”

The Wolfpack – Super League’s only transatlantic club – last month cited “overwhelming financial challenges” for their decision to temporarily withdraw from the competition.

O’Brien and Springer posted: “Third month of no pay for the players, staff and families of @TorontoWolfpackOfficial @RugbyFootballLeague #Forgotten #Mentalhealth”.

It's actually the opposite. There's actually a poster on this site who goes by the name 'kick'n'clap' - try reading some of his anti rugby rhetoric. And by the way, I stand by my PR comment 100%. Clearly you care more about the 'transatlantic concept' than the players. If the TWP were playing in a rugby competition they would be torn to shreds on this site for not paying the players etc. If you want to see how its done from the ground up take a look at the Major League Rugby Competition - I think they have around 13 teams now.

Once Perez left it was more or less curtains. It's all very well to have a wealthy sponsor - many EPL sides rely on this, but once that sponsor leaves the reality hits. Covid only hastened the demise.

No, not at all. Most of your comments have been fair and I hope my replies to you haven't been taken in a manner not intended. I'm trying to give you some historical relevance in my replies to those who make a habit of these types of BS comments about league. I'm happy to discuss anything with anyone but when it starts with that type of attitude - I'm also happy to reply in kind.

As I said, you need to not take this all so personally. It's comments on a sports forum mate. You seem to be assuming that I'm bashing league or something. I'm not, I prefer union, but I both watch and like League. Lots of people do, you need to not assume that everyone who likes one hates the other and wants to attack it. You can like something and also criticise aspects of it - if you looked at the rugby pages on this site, you'd see a lot of people who like rugby criticising Australian rugby. My comments about COVID being a cop out (re-read the sentence) are very clearly about it being a cop out to not pay your players because COVID tanked the season. As I said, that's rubbish when you're owned by a billionaire. The French rugby season was tanked by COVID - the clubs didn't stop paying their players. That's what this article is about anyway - the Wolfpack not paying their players. No one's having a go at them for not being able to play.

Valid points? Show me one valid point that I have unkindly replied too?The WP are a Canadian based organisation plying their trade on the otherside of the world but, to you, COVID is a copout? COVID is not a cop out, open your eyes, your mob are playing a tiny round robin thing because of COVID. Yes, they should be paying their players but there were no comments about that was there? Why aren't the Reds travelling to South Africa/Japan/NZ? Don't cop out with the answer now. Again, you don't notice because some of us are classy enough not to bother commenting on something they have no interest in. This article isn't on the rugby, afl or front page, these types specifically come looking on league tabs to spruke their BS.

I don't think I would notice because I'm not personally affronted by people who don't like union and want to criticise it. You know you don't have to take this personally. There are some pretty valid criticisms of Toronto's conduct here - it's not just rah rahs trying to run down league. And it's not just about COVID, that's a cop out - lot's of sports are struggling because of COVID but they're still paying their players or at the very least not abandoning them. And it's pretty valid to point out that a team which has built itself up like the Wolfpack has, is backed by very wealthy people and which wanted to make SBW the highest paid player in either rugby code should be able to pay its players their wages. Cos you know COVID may be happening, but David Argyle is still a billionaire. I'm sure him and the other owners could stump the cash.

The feckless SL should have stepped in three months ago and upgraded the Wolfpack contract to reflect the extraordinary circumstances. Pathetic.

I guess I'm coming from a perspective of where they came from to get to where they were. Covid has been unfortunate but you can hardly blame Toronto for that. They did things different and despite all that was stacked against them they got a team from Canada into the SL. That's an achievement in my view. Granted a small minded view may be to only see 6 losses though.

Yes Soda, an absolute bonanza for the game let wither on the vine. Great momentum stymied by pandemic and the money dried up. Let us hope someone or some company is going to take this on and continue to grow the fantastic platform layed down. Sad to see Argyle having to quit and leave the players in the lurch after so much personel sacrifice. No doubt he is hurting badly. These extraordinary cumstances demanded a positive response from the feckless SL. Give the players a hand.

Yeah maybe, I don't think it's unreasonable to say though that coming last makes you unsuccessful - it's professional sport, you don't win a prize for participating. And if they'd kept it up they would have been relegated.

Not many - but seeing as pre-COVID they'd won 0 games and looked like heading for relegation after one season I don't know how you can judge that as a success. For instance, the London Broncos were promoted to Super League last year and were relegated after one season. I don't think you can judge them as being a success just by making up the numbers for 2019. It's not unexpected that the Wolfpack struggled, but it's really not expecting much if they're judged a success just through turning up.

yeah may be low threshold or you may have a narrow view of what success is, perhaps only limited to immediate on field results. It's all perspective I guess.

Somehow the comments section became a RU vs RL argument? Honestly Who cares? Neither side is in a position to act all that high and mighty. I'm more focussed on how truly dissapointing this situation is for all involved. You can't help covid restrictions and it's impact but I do feel that those who run the SL and all their clubs have missed a trick by not supporting the wolfpack in their moment of need. The wolfpack were going to be a massive draw card for anyone they played against (irregardless of their actual on field results). They really have turned the back on their brightest light. Typical rugby league though, one step forward two steps back.

Well, if turning up for the games = success, then you have a very low threshold for success.

Greysy if I was on the rahrah threads everyday running it down, you would notice. I raised COVID because that is the real reason it has failed this season. His comment was a cheap, ill informed comment just like the 100 others before.
