Scott needs convincing on flag chances

By News / Wire

Geelong coach Chris Scott still isn’t sure his side deserves to be rated among the AFL’s leading premiership contenders.

That’s despite the Cats locking in a top-four spot for the fourth time in five seasons, earning a double chance for next month’s finals series.

It comes after a nervy six-point win over lowly Sydney at Metricon Stadium on Sunday, sealed by Mark Blicavs’ desperate smother in the dying seconds.

“I’m not saying we took anything for granted, but as soon as you are a little bit off, I think the gap between the best and the rest becomes pretty small,” Scott said post-match.

“I’m not even convinced we’re in the best just yet, but we’ve got the opportunity to prove that.”

Geelong coughed up four of the first five goals to Sydney, who squandered chances to really twist the knife, allowing a Cats outfit inspired by Patrick Dangerfield’s forward line heroics late in the match to prevail.

Without that win, the Cats would have slipped to fifth and faced an elimination final in week one.

“For a long time we’ve had a group of players that don’t turn up their toes when things aren’t going well,” Scott said.

“All the good sides in the modern era have had that trait.

“It doesn’t guarantee you anything going forward and if we play that way we’re not going to compete with the very best teams.

“But it gives you a chance if things don’t go your way early and you know that there’s the strength of character and will to keep persisting.”

First-choice ruckman Rhys Stanley is “almost certain” to overcome his groin injury in time for a qualifying final against either Brisbane or Port Adelaide in a boost to the Cats’ chances.

Experienced stars Joel Selwood (knee) and Gary Ablett (family reasons) made successful returns against Sydney after extended stints out of the side.

Geelong spearhead Tom Hawkins kicked two goals to take his season tally to 42 in 17 matches.

The Cats’ nine-time leading goal kicker will win the Coleman Medal for the first time this year and is vital to their premiership chances.

There was a player they called Blame He rose to the heights of great fame But when they looked for a stat They discovered that He'd never even played a game There was a player called Failure An Aussie Rules man of Australia But like a lost little kid He never saw what he did His storys he'll never regale ya There was a player named Shame His task was to take down a name So heavy the cloak It made the man choke All he wanted was to play a Game

Plenty of other sides with equal to more talent to us Jake, I'd hardly consider us the best in the comp over the last few years. I will say that last year we were the best alongside the tigers and let ourselves down, but we were way off it in 16-18 with far too many passengers and piss poor bottom 6 players, and an unhealthy reliance on Dangerwood to get us out of trouble. I understand your frustrations but speaking to other cat fans and from experience, going into finals with pessimism and negativity has not served us well. I hope Scott can get the most of the group and we get to see this team finally fire in September/October, but if we fail then so be it, whoever deserves it usually wins out in the end. The tigers were going through a similar stretch of finals failures going into 2017, but went into that campaign full of belief and positivity and we all know what transpired. We need to change the energy around the club heading into finals because for the last 6-7 years its been the same old "we always choke in finals, we're destine to fail" mantra and it's clearly not working. Instead of acting like they owe us something (and waiting for them to fail to be vindicated), how about this time around we just get behind them, believe in them, and hope they can deliver.

Seriously Dangerfield and Hawkins in their prime, a great captain, great role players Duncan and Blitz he really has failed if he can't win one. It's embarrassing being a cats fan and not winning anything with this much talent. What more could a coach ask for? It's not good enough not having the silverware when we've been the best side for years. I love Chris Scott but seriously it's not good enough, he will be an absolute choker if he doesn't get a cup with this side

Believe in your players and get them to win it for you. Let them know you will be crucified and critically shamed if you fail again. If you don't get a flag this year with Dangerfield still in his prime it will be an absolute failure. Stop falling from the finish line and get it done.

Finals flops is all the haters have to hang their hats on. Lifes too short. If Cats can execute their basics well under pressure that'll do me. And it could well be enough. Gazza still has that electricity every time he get the ball. Harry Taylor awesome this year. Danger wants a flag too much gosh bless him. It's not healthy but it'd be the coolest thing to see him holding the cup. Now we have to wait till next Thursday playing Port under lights at home. I've got no idea what to think. it's just so exciting all the anticipation. Thanks again Cats.

Thanks mate :stoked: so nice to read something positive for a change on here.. wish more cat fans had a similar mindset, so often victims of the clubs unrelenting success, having made so many finals they've grown to take it for granted, obsessing with winning it all and forgetting to enjoy the journey, or the fact that their club has essentially overcome the competitions equalisation protocols to rebuild on the fly and front up time and time again for finals (something not even Hawthorn/Syd could keep up).. as i tell them, long suffering st kilda, carlton and Melbourne fans would kill to be in our position, so don't take it for granted. Yes the club hasn't yet capitalised on their opportunities, but the very fact that they keep persisting and refuse to fall away is admirable, and who knows, maybe this will finally be the year things work out differently for them. It's been a strange old year in every other sense, so why not 3 finals wins in a row to change the "finals failures" narrative once and for all? Hopeing they can get it done for the older blokes, would be magical to see old Harry and Gaz go out with a bang, and Danger finally get that flag that all his years of hard work and dedication deserves.

He puts on a brave, philosophical face fronting up to the media, but no doubt there would have been some rage behind the scenes during/after that match.. I'm sure he's well aware of the issues, and the significance of this finals campaign, have a little faith, it's not like our continues pessimism has helped over the last few years. As for Fort not playing, I think it's a good sign that Stanley will be fit for the finals, otherwise they would have started him.. Fort won't get it done in finals, we need Stanley if we are to have any chance against port and the rest. Fingers crossed he doesn't break down again...

Nonetheless, there is no team that wants to play WC. They'll all be hoping another team knocks the Eagles out.

That kick from Rowbottom looked to have goal written all over it. Smothered one metre after leaving the boot and you had the trajectory marked? You should do DRS Hawkeye for cricket with that remarkable call, Realist. :p But yes - too hard to read on the cats form. I think they felt the game was in the bag and they could go at 80%. They were wrong.

Thanks to cats for another Finals. So far so good. Keep fronting up and you never know what might happen. You may not be exactly sitting pretty like everyone else in the top four but you've earned your spot. Kudos to Paddy Dangerfield for his return home and all his hard won possies over the years. Not to mention some timely goals. Also Bliscavs so often this year and again in the dying seconds. Enjoy the brilliant anticipation of your daring journey to the big dance should it be your destiny.

Geelong are the only side that can threaten Richmond for the flag, so the Tigers will be hoping Scott is right about the Cat's form. The Cats will come out firing I would suspect. West Coast could be threat, but are unlikely to advance far in the finals this year.

Cats were just one smother away from missing the top 4. That kick from Rowbottom looked to have goal written all over it. Are they tapering off again like they did last year. Very hard to read the Cats form right now.

Getting a bit over the utterances of " Sigmund " Scott and his analysis. How about going back to basics and playing a Ruckman , Forte was available for the Sydney game .Also on the bench select an extra player for each part of the ground ie forward line etch.
