NRL semi-final teams: Roosters get a boost, Eels name Ferguson

By The Roar / Editor

The NRL semi-final teams have been revealed.

The Parramatta Eels have named Blake Ferguson for Saturday’s do-or-die clash with South Sydney, despite the premiership winger suffering a leg injury in last weekend’s loss to the Storm.

George Jennings has been named opposite him as the injured Maiko Sivo’s replacement, while Ray Stone has been called up to the bench to replace the suspended Marata Niukore.

The Roosters, on the other hand, are buoyed by the returns of Jake Friend and Sonny Bill Williams for their semi-final with Canberra. Their inclusions see Nat Butcher demoted to the reserves and Freddy Lussick miss selection altogether.

Last weekend’s elimination final winners, Canberra and South Sydney, go in unchanged.

You forgot to add - that in both first 2 disallowed tries the bunker overruled the ref. The second was a bunker disaster as the ball obviously came off Keary's shoulder - and yet, no sign of Annesley to announce a rejig of the bunker that he only has done for Roosters...

Souths may have dodged a bullet there, don't know yet. But most people with a sense of smell would have detected the unmistakable scent of chook around this issue from the beginning. The RahRahs contingent is in the east but they just didn't have the few loose millions to toss around to a rookie, regardless of how good he might be. Other personalities in the area have and would. Sudden timing to ruin the Souths contract with Suaalii resulting in eventual benefit for the Roosters. Conundrum solving 101, follow the trail and see who benefits.

Papi, The crucial game will be against the Eels, that is our litmus test, we can easily fall back into that "beating ourselves" mode that we have seen in some games this season and lose, however should the Rabbitohs convincingly beat the Eels, then I have no doubt we will win the Comp, as added to a convincing victory over the Eels then in the last 6 weeks we have scored an impressive 56 points against Manly, 60 against the Chooks, 38 (0) against Eels and 46 against the Knights. we will have all the momentum and belief to do so. In the Prelim Final Souths' belief would be greater than that of the Panthers who will be without Kikau, plus I think two weeks off for the Panthers will play on their young, finals inexperienced team. They didn't need a rest, the worst thing that could happen to them is make them feel they are the best team and give them 2 weeks off as a prize - they wont be strengthened by this like a Storm or East would. I believe should we get over Parra, Penrith will quickly be disposed of, it will be the time that Penrith (finally) slip up. As for the GF I agree Canberra would be good, but as you said Roosters always have help (as do the Storm) so I would be surprised if even a great Canberra can beat a Roosters (and/ Storm) + Bunker + Trainers + Referees + Touch Judges + Judiciary + Salary Cap. So I guess it is a Souths v (Easts/Storm) Grand Final. Go Souths!

Um. He stepped down about 7 or 8 years ago. You are a bit behind there. Richard Gardham has been doing the job for 6 or 7 years ad when you consider the $1m Souths dodged with the Greg Inglis decision, the market evaluation of Latrell and a couple of other decisions, I don't know that Souths fans should be making too much noise..

Yeah the Roosters had been "audited" by Ian 'Shoey' Schubert roosters player and chief salary cap auditor for the National Rugby League. Enough said.....

Blake is a liability and is rocks and diamonds but you have to go through a hell of a lot of rocks to find those diamonds, and they aren't all that impressive anyway. Takarangi is much more consistent. You know what you are going to get with him. He was the person largely responsible for Semi Radradra's success in the NRL drawing two defenders and giving Semi a clear run down the sideline more often than not. As a Souths supporter I'm very happy to see Ferguson and Blake defending together. Let's not change anything. Even better if Fergo is on one leg. ;-)

No, Smith's charge is also ridiculous. But given Cam Smith's history and the times he SHOULD have been suspended I'd say it's karma... if I believed in that sort of thing.

Well the Roosters are unlikely to get done for breeching the salary cap 7 years ago because presumably they have been audited in that time and given nothing has come out of that, we can believe that everything is above board. But I gather you are one of those conspiracy theorists who thinks, if a club does something well, they must be cheating... unless it is Souths of course.. so probably not worth either of our time arguing the point. :)

"deliberately and systematically hidden the doctored drug tests, violent player behaviour and drug use" What are you on about? Do you even know? And what IF the Roosters get busted for being over the salary cap since 2013? Will they lose their 2013, 2018 and 2019 premierships? We can all play that game mate. Anyway, it's 7 in the morning a little too early for that level of medication Andrew? How are you going to get through the day at that rate, mate? Take a breath and avoid medication that contain mind-altering hallucinogens.

I don't get Brad Arthur's persistence with Waqa Blake. Brad Takarangi isn't about to win the Golden Boot award, but when you consider the various traits you look for in a Centre, other than speed - which is important and Blake certainly has in spades, Takarangi is; A better tackler A better defensive read Works harder Is physically capable of passing a football Can offload Has some level of creativity Can put in the occasional acceptable short kick. Seems to have better Football IQ I would love to know the argument for starting Blake over Takarangi every single week this season.
