What if Gary Ablett stayed at Geelong?

By Liam Clark / Roar Guru

With Geelong’s victory against Brisbane last weekend, they will now face Richmond in the 2020 grand final in the upcoming days.

While the grand final will be historic in many ways, the epic finale to the 2020 season will also be the last ever appearance from the great Gary Ablett Jr in an AFL match.

After nearly two decades played across two teams, the Little Master’s terrific career is finally closing with a chance to have a fairytale ending and finish his career with a premiership.

However, with Ablett finishing his career with Geelong on grand final day, it is intriguing to look back and hypothesise how different Ablett’s career would have been if he had stayed with the Cats instead of heading to the Gold Coast back in 2011.

Ablett played seven seasons with the Suns, consistently providing a high level of play in a below-average team. He continued to be the best player in the competition over his first four seasons with the Gold Coast Suns.

The superstar even acquired a Brownlow medal during his tenure with the Suns as he stood out as one of the best even on a team playing poor footy.

While his last three years with the Suns were plagued by injury, his tenure with the team is seen as a major success as his level of play was constantly at superstar status and he helped keep the Suns’ team afloat at times.

However, while Ablett had great individual success with the club, Gold Coast has still not had a single finals appearance since their inception into the AFL.

This has led many fans to believe that Ablett had wasted his talents at the Suns, with the two-time Brownlow winner and two-time premiership player playing some of his best years in a club that made no major steps forward in terms of success.

Meanwhile, in the seasons Ablett played for the Suns, the Cats won a premiership back in 2011 and had mixed finals success until Ablett returned, never making it to the big dance again until this year.

With Ablett’s leadership and pure talent, it is easy to assume that the Cats would have had more success with the superstar in their midfield.

It is easy to question how many grand final appearances and potential premierships the Cats would have acquired had Ablett spent his entire career with the team.

While there will be some who argue that footy is a team sport and one player cannot change the outcome of game by themselves, it is easy to predict that a club managing to retain one of the greatest of all time on their side could have had some different outcomes.

Ablett certainly would have been a three-time premiership player already, and we could have had an opportunity to see the squad win more and create a dynasty.

While he may have detoured to the Gold Coast for seven years and it is easy to discuss what-if scenarios if Ablett had stayed, Gary Ablett Jr will always be a valued and loved member of the Geelong Cats with the team having the perfect opportunity to give the star the fairytale ending he deserves.

It is a shame, it would been great to see what both players could have done if they both stayed at their respective clubs

Especially since it changes what players may have been squeezed out as well as all subsequent trades and drafts. For example Brandan Parfitt would not be lining up for Geelong on Saturday if Ablett didn’t sign with the Suns.

It was sad that he left. Pushed by Bomber and enticed and encouraged by AFL hierarchy. Similar tragedy with Buddy.

Oh definitely, Ablett could have been the difference maker in a lot of those Finals they have lost. Unfortunately, we can only predict what could have been

His best years were certainly with a bad side which is unfortunate. I think the Cats could potentially qualify as a dynasty, Richmond if they win tomorrow will and Hawthorn's three-peat will cement them in history as one of the best teams out

Definitely agree, losing Ottens really hurt the team when up against quality ruckman like Sandilands. Spending his whole career with Geelong definitely would have made the Little Master more of a legend than he already is.

I agree wholeheartedly Boo. Ablett re signing with Geelong could have resulted in far more premierships, however we all know that Geelong puts the team first as you have said with the team making this years Grand Final after losing Tim Kelly and the team winning the premiership its first year without Gary Ablett. It will be a sad day tomorrow and I hope to see Geelong get up for the star

They've made the finals, essentially, ever since he left, and have lost an awful lot of them. Him in might change that equation some.

I don’t think it is a given that the Cats still win the 2011 flag if Ablett had stayed. Talk at the time we the offer Geelong was making Ablett would have meant the Cats would have had to offload one, maybe two players. We will never know who they may have been nor the effect on losing that depth would have had.

I think the Cats already qualified as a dynasty, three flags in 5 years surely would be enough. Tigers possibly 3 in 4 tomorrow also would qualify. He did his best to get the Suns going but yes his best years in a dull side.

I actually think that Bard Ottens was a bigger loss that Gazza in terms of us not winning more GF's after 2011. In 2013 the lack of a quality ruckman hurt us badly as that was the key reason we lost to Freo and thus resulted in us running out of steam against the Hawks (although if it'd been Gazza running into that open goal at the death instead of Varcoe......) As a Geelong supporter the greatest loss of Gazza leaving was that he's not going down in history as a Geelong player for his entire career.

A fair question re Ablett staying at Geelong but an unsolvable answer.Win or lose tomorrow Geelong have shown it's always team first with the club by backing up and making the GF without Kelly as they did in 2011 after Ablett departed.Senior started in 84 at Geelong finishing up in 97 Junior 01 began to now so touch of sadness about tomorrow.
