Team India's selection conundrum for Adelaide Test

By NISHANT / Roar Rookie

As team India set to lock horns with the baggy greens for what is billed to be the most exciting contest for the year 2020 and early 2021, both sides have been hit with late injury concerns and some unfortunate omissions.

While part of the hype billed up for the series was the defending champions of the Border Gavaskar trophy taking on a full strength Aussie team at home, some of that sheen is gone with David Warner ruled out of first Test.

Australia will also go without the services of the upcoming talent of Will Pucvoski for the first Test, while there are injury clouds on Mitch Starc and Cam Green as well.

Also with Joe Burns being completely out of form, Australia might go with a radical opening pair.

India on the other hand are hit by the current hard times that we are living in.

In a normal scenario, Virat Kohli might have missed the second Test to welcome fatherhood, but could have potentially played the last two Tests had there been no hard quarantine for 14 days as mandated.

Similarly despite their injury concerns, both Rohit and Ishant Sharma would have better chance of participation in this series – although they still might.

As team India start their fresh overseas Test assignment, some of their old problems resurface – namely who would be the second opener, who would be the third seamer, the lone spinner and the wicketkeeper?

In addition, they have to also decide who would be their new No.4 once Virat leaves and how to rope back Rohit Sharma when he arrives.

India would be potentially without their two prolific batsmen Virat and Rohit, and their reliable fast bowler in Ishant Sharma for the better part of the series. That’s a massive loss, but that can also mean that they can play with more freedom as not many would not give them a chance this summer.

Let’s look at some of the pain points in the Indian line-up and their alternatives. For the openers, I see Mayank Agarwal being the first choice with some very good batting performances in the recent Tests as well as the recently concluded IPL.

The other opener could be a toss up between KL Rahul and Shubman Gill and both appear to be in good form. The one who misses out as an opener could replace Virat from the second Test onwards.

I think KL Rahul may just get a nod ahead, being the more experienced batsman and team India would like him to be their third/reserve opener when Rohit resumes the duty.

Coming to which, team India should prepare and plan ahead with the notion that Rohit would not likely participate.

I don’t see Rohit playing much part in this Test series, unless India are 0-2 down by the two Tests, or lost the second Test with one of the openers being horribly out of sorts.

Since Rohit would be coming off without much practice and also a hard quarantine and thus would not be in an ideal state.

Coming to the No.4, there is an interesting rumour of Ajinkya Rahane, the stand-in captain, potentially batting at No.4 once Virat leaves and moving from his normal No.5 position.

This sounds more aggressive and taking on the responsibility route, and sends the right signal to the opposition.

Vihari might play at No.5 or Gill could play at No.5 with Vihari at 6. Shubman Gill looked a million bucks in the warm ups he played, especially his driving to balls pitched up and should be the ideal replacement.

Also playing a little low in the order would fetch him better chance to perform better with a comparatively softer ball in what would be his debut series against a full fledged Aussie attack playing in their own den!

For the better part of this tour, Saha seemed to be front runner to play as the wicket keeper (wk), ahead of Pant, who seemed to have fallen a bit out of favour from the selectors.

But his 71-ball century in the warm up game would have done his chances no harm. And when playing against Australia in Australia, aggression is something which team India would want in their kitty, and Pant is perfectly capable of that and playing counter attacking innings if needed.

So I would be expecting Pant to don the big gloves at Adelaide.

Umesh Yadav should walk in as their third seamer, with good consistent performances in the past and with a bit of experience on his side. If India do play a spinner, Ravi Ashwin should get the nod ahead with Ravindra Jadeja not being available for the first Test.

Or if India do go with four seamers, Mohammed Siraj should break in. I don’t see team India fielding five specialist bowlers in any of the Test matches, as with Virat not being around it would weaken the batting further. And Adelaide being a day night Test, it does command an extra batter.

All said and done, this promises to be an exciting Test series. Not making any predictions, and team India’s omissions not withstanding, I still back them to be at least competitive throughout the series with some exciting talent on display!

What's this 'Team India' nonsense? Is it test cricket or The Voice? How is Team Delta going?

I appreciate the breakdown of India's options Nishant. Well done! I always been of the belief Pant is a solid player and if India drop him for the opening Test, then that will be to Australia's advantage. You can't replace what Kohli brings to the team and with Rohit Sharma still out, India will need some batter to really step up once Kohli departs.

Probably Umesh will play as a third pacer due to his experience. Also Saha will be pecked due to more Pink-ball movement and a better defensive batsman.

As Rahul has not played any of the warm-up matches, I think he is not in contention, Gill will open with Agarwal. Rahul will play from 2nd. Test onwards may be as an opener or at No.4.

Hi Paul. With Regards to Rohit, BCCI has really created an unnecessary fiasco the way they have handled the entire episode. I don't think there is an intention of not playing Rohit and yet taking him to the tour. His playing chances i think would depend on the scoreline. If India wins the 2nd test, and yet India drops one of the openers to accommodate Rohit at the top, it would create unnecessary controversy, specially given that he would be coming off without much game time. By playing with more freedom I don't mean throwing caution to the wind, rather playing with less baggage that comes with the expectations. Its like dropping a weight from your back and walking. You can hope for Pant to play and drop some catches and you can come out very disappointed, and more so when he smashes Lyon for fun. With regards to not giving them much of a chance, well this is not my opinion. I still back my team to do well. This is but a popular opinion with many experts calling for a 4-0 whitewash for the Indian team. And this is due to the fact that Australia this time are playing full strength, India on the other hand are without their star batsman and couple of other big names.

Hi Mark, Rohit isn't available until the third test actually. He misses out the first two tests. So you need a replacement for Kohli before. Gill/Rahul seems to be the one for that slot. Besides I don't think Rohit would be played in the middle order again !

Hi Dave, Agreed Rohit has a poor test record overseas. But he still remains India's prolific batsman. If you see, this is almost a second wind for Rohit, as now he is playing as an opener and there is more certainity regarding his place in the XI. Earlier he used to get a match, 2 match max in overseas before he was dropped for better balance of the team. Besides being injured very often. So he hasn't got a real opportunity and consistency to express himself overseas till now. And after a dream start as an opener in tests at home, this was supposed to be a litmus test for him to find where he is currently in test cricket. But unfortunate, how things have shaped up for him. With Regards to Saha, I have immense respect for him and personally would like to see him in the XI. He also showed great promise with the bat in the IPL surprising many. So he's no mug with the bat either. But Pant is slightly better batsman and can play those explosive innings or counter attacking cameos that can shift the pressure towards the opponent. Yes I'm aware of the circumstances in which Pant scored his century, while Saha scored a half century when the chips were down. But I think the management would go with the more aggressive option as the ball doesn't do a lot for someone behind the stumps. So the gap between Pant and Saha as a keeper diminishes. Besides Pant being a Southpaw brings variety to the line up, specially considering the threat of Lyon around.

Hi, I think KL Rahul in the recent past has become a big name in the Indian dressing room. He's someone if you are having him in your squad you are more likely to play him in the XI. He's also someone when he's in groove reminds you of Virat, with some superb stroke making ability and grace on his side. Also has the tempo to take on the bowlers. This is the reason that he was rewarded with a selection in the test team post his IPL show, although he had a very poor recent test record. As he is someone the management and many others still think very highly off. Vihari's slot is secured. Its a toss up between Gill & Rahul for opener slot and I explained my reason why I would go with Rahul as an opener. Though I'm confident & hoping both of them will find a place from the 2nd test onwards.

Some interesting thoughts Nishant. If Rohit was not likely to play in this series, why was he named in the squad some time ago and why has there been some much expensive effort made to get him to Australia, through quarantine, etc? I also hope India do use Pant as their keeper, because he’s way more likely to miss chances than Saha. Agreed he had a lovely time just recently at the SCG with the bat, but I wonder how he’ll go if the team is 4 or 5 down for not many, as it was pretty often in New Zealand. I’m also not sure about this comment, “that can also mean that they can play with more freedom as not many would not give them a chance this summer.” First of all, India has been dominant in world cricket because they have a team full of great players, so anyone who gives them little chance this series is making a huge mistake, IMO. I also doubt greatly they could or should play with freedom. Australia showed last summer how relentless their attack can be and how easily they can punish any loose shots. If I was Tim Paine, I’d be encouraging the Indians to play more freely because that gives his side lots more opportunities to take wickets.

Rohit Sharma isn't available until at least the 2nd test. Pujara and Rahane are certainties to play all four tests unless injured. Once Kohli leaves after the 1st test, India will need another batsman to replace him, and Sharma is the likely replacement.

Sharma is hardly a prolific Test batsman outside India - he only averages 26 away from home. I would have thought Pujara, Rahane and Agarwal are much surer bets with the bat coming to Australia. Pant did very well under lights, but Saha actually had a very good inning that saved India in the previous tour game against Australia A, 54 no, against a much better attack with Pattinson and Neser. He was given out in the first innings to a bad decision.

If India were considering KL Rahul for this test, they would have played him in the 3 day warm-up matches. They didn't, so very hard to see that they will pick him, especially given Agarwhal, Gill and Vihari all scored runs in the last warm-up.
