The Roar's A-League expert tips and predictions: Match Week 15

By Stuart Thomas / Expert

Paul Nicholls’ golden run at the top of the tipping ladder continues; now eight points clear and looking a certain winner.

If there ever was a week to make ground upon him it is the upcoming seven days, where nine matches will be played and A-League action gracing our screens each and every day. The pick of the matches involve the Mariners, firstly when they face the Reds tonight in a battle for top spot and on Tuesday when they back up against the Wanderers.

Good luck with your tips this week and be sure to enter them in the sheet below to have a say in the reliable voice of the crowd. Here are the thoughts of the panel on all the Match Week 15 action.

Hard to stop City in the form they’re in, particularly as they’re playing this ‘away’ game in their own stadium.

Can Adelaide win games on the road? With the Mariners so tough to beat this season, this one could finish in a stalemate.

We’re halfway through the season and I still have no idea whether Macarthur are a decent team or not. I’ll stick my neck out and go for a home win.

Brisbane Roar are tough to beat at Redcliffe, but they’ve had plenty of distractions this week. This might not be the game of the round.

Melbourne Victory might want to win for Grant Brebner, but sadly for them, the team is absolute rubbish. Sydney FC simply must win at AAMI Park.

The Jets have had a rough few weeks. It won’t get any easier when they lose to Western United at home.

I’m tempted to tip a draw in Wollongong, mainly because Wellington have been luckless this season. But it’s hard not to back City in this kind of form.

I expected more of the Wanderers this season, with commanding performances few and far between. Both sides will be hard to break down.

Sydney FC better get a hurry-on if they want to secure their spot in the finals. They’ll view this game as an opportunity to dent the hopes of a direct rival.

Okay, here goes in what looks an epic week of A-League football. Melbourne City will continue their run against Western United tonight and Adelaide will knock the Mariners off the top of the ladder with a win on the road just a couple of hours later.

I’m tipping Macarthur to beat Perth in Sydney on Friday, based mostly on the defensive issues Perth appear to have on the road.

Brisbane will lose all hope of a finals’ appearance if the Wanderers are permitted into the state to claim the three points on Saturday and Sydney FC should be able to man handle Victory on Sunday considering the absence of positive signs emanating from Grant Brebner’s camp.

Without confidence I’ll tip Western United to pip Newcastle in the Hunter on Monday before City back up from the weekend with another three points against Wellington in Wollongong.

Tuesday’s clash between the Wanderers and Mariners looks a ripper and the red and black will win it; announcing themselves as the real deal, before Sydney FC claim their second win in four days, against what will be a tired Perth Glory.

Paul Nicholls
City, Adelaide, Macarthur, Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle, City, Central Coast, Sydney

I have no idea how I happen to be leading but I’m getting a little nervous. Now that the Ever Given has been refloated in the Suez Canal, I’m starting to empathise with her captain.

Sure he’s got clear water ahead but when he takes a look behind him, holy moley, there’s a flotilla bigger than D-day coming up fast.

Western United will have no chance against Melbourne City. Adrian Luna and Craig Noone have City at full steam ahead. Are the Mariners listing to port? I think Adelaide can capsize them away from home.

Macarthur are proving to be the surprise packet of the season. They surprise when they win and surprise when they lose. They should sink Perth this week.

Who knows what will pan out in Brisbane over the next few days? I hope all Roar fans are doing OK. For the city’s morale I’ll tip them against Western Sydney.

Forget the Big Blue, I think we should rename this the seniors derby. Sydney might just have too many (false) teeth. Newcastle showed plenty of ticker after trailing by two goals against Perth last week. A half decent crowd should see the Jets back in the winner’s circle.

Can big bad Steve Taylor keep Jamie Maclaren quiet? He might but City have too many big guns for Wellington. Other than their mauling at the hands of Melbourne City, the Wanderers have looked good for the last few weeks.

The Mariners are in a mini rut, but with Gianni Stensness blocking the middle like a container ship across a canal, I think they’ll get up.

Sydney to wrap up a titanic round with a win over Perth.

The mercy rule will soon be applied in this tips and predictions league as Mr Nicholls stretches his lead out even further ahead of this nine-game blockbuster public holiday weekend. But will nine games go ahead?

Early knock-off from work for anyone wanting to go to the first game of the weekend, Western United with a chance to topple the form team City.

When Dylan Pierias puts United ahead, the alarm bells will be ringing, when Besart Berisha knocks in a second against the run of play, it will be all out attack from City. A surprise then when the green and black hold on for the win.

Mariners are off the boil. Adelaide are on fire. But it’s not as cut and dried as that. Marco Urena and Craig Goodwin to have a striking duel, but the, er, Bear from Point Clare, Matty Simon, will get the all-important winner in a high scoring affair at the Stadium of Sauce.

When Perth finally find the form they showed in the early stages of the season, Macarthur will be dumb-founded. The pure silk of Daniel Stynes will appear from the bench to set up the winner for Bruno Fornaroli in a smash-and-grab win at the Bull pen.

If the Roar game goes ahead at the Moreton Daily Redcliffe Dolphin Stadium, it will see two ill-prepared teams go head to head. Wanderers were meek in defeat at City, but at least they got some game time.

Roar to give the Brisbane faithful something to cheer, but the firepower of the Wanderers will shine through late on, Berie Ibini scoring a brace in a handy win.

Sydney have disappointed this season. It’s the same pattern every game. If they had a striker with a killer instinct, they would be top by miles.

For all the pretty tippy-tappy football and sublime skills of Milos Ninkovic and Anthony Caceres, the rewards have been scant. This is the week that Victory get their win. One goal will do it, Jake Brimmer sweeping the ball in the net on the follow up.

Newcastle have the chance to get back on track against a Western United team jaded from their exploits on Thursday. A deflected shot from Ramy Najjarine will set the Jets away and they will endure ten minutes of injury time at the end of the game hanging on to the one goal advantage in an ugly win.

Phoenix will turn on the style at WIN Stadium, Tomer Hemed striking early on to set the scene for a thrilling game.

City will dominate large parts of this one, but the home side will rely on a bit of luck to keep the marauding Melbourne City attack at bay and snatch a second goal late on to seal an unlikely win.

Crisis time at City, temporarily taking the heat off neighbours Victory.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Both the Mariners and Western Sydney will be full of confidence for this one, in front of a decent crowd at Bankwest.

Home advantage will give the Wanderers an edge and they will scrape a win, Daniel Margush saving two penalties to preserve an early lead in an absorbing game.

Sydney FC will pull out all the stops for my birthday treat. The profligacy that has haunted them all season will disappear for one perfect evening and Kosta Barbarouses will score twice in a display of clinical finishing.

Perth will not know what has hit them, three down at the break and then conceding more in front of the Cove for a thumping defeat.

controversial view, bur redmayne has never been good enough to be a number 1. This is still the same guy who was making clangers/howlers all the time while at heart and the wanderers. He is extremely lucky that he moved to sydney who have always had excellent centrebacks that shield him as much as humanly possible from shots and defend very well as unit. i put redmayne in the same category as the other red(dy) goalkeeper; of being very average. Sydney will more than likely pick up danny vukovic

i was one of the rare few adelaide fans that wanted him to start the season as first choice, delianov makes too many mistakes consistently to be a number 1

So at this stage the Roar are permitted to play? Great news, they could do with some points.

i dont rate the bulls at all! have you not seen my many posts about them having the most over rated coach in australia and the squad on paper is old with no goals in it. They are one of the 2 worst teams to watch play, boring boring boring football. Playing most of there matches in nsw at the start of the season helped them gather points. Bring on some more interstate travel and a couple of injuries and watch them tumble down the ladder. They have had a vey easy schedule and lack of injuries

I love the fact that we can watch football all weekend. and then some. Hard to keep tabs on the table and the fixtures, agreed, but in our household, there is nothing better that a few drinkies and snacks while the football is on the box. WUN 0 vs 2 MCY- Some people are saying that City are playing some attractive football and are the form team at the moment. Well, I'm not one of them, show ponies yes they are, and they will be too good for WU. This may be the match week where City start to feel the strain. I think their injury list may start to impact future results. To beat City you need to dry up their supply to Jamie and Nabout. Stop No One supplying them and they will struggle. CCM 1 vs 3 ADL – Mariners at home hold no fears for Adelaide. Over time they have had some pretty decent results up there. I feel it my bones that this will be a 'Battle Royal' with plenty of cards, maybe more than 1 RED one. With Tomi in the squad he just may end up being the super sub coming on in the 70th Minute, to score a brace. It will be tight early and I expect CCM to take an early lead but AUFC to pull it back before the break. I expect both the Referee and VAR to come under even more pressure and abuse than usual MAC 1 vs 1 PER – I think I'm the only one on here that doesn't rate the BULLS. I don't think they have the 'cattle' [see what I've done here] to make it a fairytale year for them. Glory will have to start picking up points soon, so I'm tipping they start here with just the one. BRI 2 vs 1 WSW – Not even sure this game is going ahead, is it? Well lets pretend it is and hopefully the ROAR will lift the spirits of their supporters by taking care of the Wanderers. MVC 0 vs 1 SYD – Sydney will struggle and Stevie C should start their kids and bring on both Kosta and BoBo to finish the game. Sydney won't score, again, but an own goal or a silly goalkeeping mistake to be the difference. Victory are still hopeless. NEW 2 vs 2 WUN- This may end up as the most entertaining game of the round. That's if you like watching two tough sides going at each other. Two sides who don't mind throwing around their weight. Goals galore because neither side can defend. WEL 0 vs 1 MCY – The Nix will huff and puff but Jamie will put one of their umpteen chances away for a slender win. Unfortunately the NIX don't have anyone to keep Noone quiet for the full 90 minutes. WSW 0 vs 2 CCM – Mariners will bounce back from their home loss to the REDS with an emphatic win against the WSW. Leaving most everyone scratching their heads in amazement. Central Coast may not be in top spot after this round, but don't fall into that trap of thinking they are going to fold up and fall away. SYD 3 vs 0 PER – Sydney will give their supporters some much need joy over the Easter break. With this score line, thousands will come out of the woodwork and declare SFC a certainty for the double again.

im going to pick a few 'upsets' for this matchweek, i can sense some big results coming as we enter the 2nd half of the season: WUN 1 vs 1 MCY- the thugs have underperformed this season, there are a lot of goals in that Team on paper, its surprisingly at the other end that’s hurting them (who would've though, a mark rudan team that struggles defensively) Stop Jamie Mac and they are in with a shout. City have a game in hand, so they can have an off night. City do have a fantastic record against the thugs and my prediction of a draw in what could be a fun derby would be an upset as such CCM 1 vs 2 ADL - central coast have lost 9 out of the last 11 games against adelaide, can they break the streak? will the emotion of their visit to adelaide earlier in the season get the better of the mariners in front of a hostile home gosford crowd? In saying that, i am quietly confident of escaping nsw with 3 points even though all the betting agencies and pundits are picking the mariners to win. I really think the feelings and pressure of this 'grudge match' will get to the mariners. Im expecting some overzealous tackling on yengi and mauk. Cool heads are needed, and i can see juande controlling the tempo/pace of the match. The battle of elsey and jakobsen against Simon & urena will decide this match. 3 points are more needed by the mariners, because if they lose they could fall to third with the teams above them having a game in hand. They say pressure makes diamonds, unfortunately for the mariners it is going to be a cubic zirconia MAC 1 vs 1 PER - glory are struggling (but with games in hand still) they need to start picking up points anyway possible. Playing against one of the most boring teams in league away from home, but i think they are good enough to at least get a point. BRI 0 vs 1 WSW - wanderers were in that match against city for a good 45 mins but they fell away with their usual jekyll & hyde performance. If brisbane lose here, i think moon is under pressure to do away with their brexit longball stuff they play (its not entertaining and its not working) do brisbane have 2 goals in them at dolphin? i dont even think they have one in them this week, wanderers to pinch this with a late goal. brisbane with 2 games in hand though MVC 1 vs 0 SYD - this is my big shock prediction, i saw enough last week of victory to sit back and defend. yes, its not pretty, but they need to salvage this season. I could definitely see them going with the same game plan against sydney. If sydneys OAPs don’t score, we know there youngsters’ wont either; they get into great positions but cant hit the back of the net. Victory to score in the first 20 mins and spend the next 70 defending while facing 20+ shots from sydney. NEW 0 vs 2 WUN- poor newcastle, please for the love of god play your kids!. The thugs to leave the hunter with a much needed 3 points WEL 1 vs 1 MCY - wellington have blown hot and cold this season, i feel as though talay will have a plan in place to stop the service to citys rampaging forward line. Another semi upset with this prediction. WSW 2 vs 1 CCM - pressure is piling on central now, can they handle it? im not so sure, once again, with the wanderers its whether jekyll or hyde come out. Lets make the top 6 a bit more interesting, with a resurgent wanderer picking up a win against the team starting to crack SYD 1 vs 0 PER - tough for perth, 2nd interstate away match in a row. Sydney to finally get a much needed win
