Cliffhanger Cats: Why are Geelong so good in close games?

By News / Wire

Geelong have survived an AFL thriller for the second week in a row, holding off rivals Hawthorn by five points in a desperate finish at the MCG.

Ten days after controversially defeating Brisbane by one point, the Cats again fell in by less than a goal after leading the Hawks by 24 points at three-quarter-time on Easter Monday.

Hawks forward Mitch Lewis cut the lead to four points when he goaled with three minutes to go, but the Cats’ experience came through as they thwarted Hawthorn’s attempts to pinch the victory.

Geelong’s only goal of the last quarter was a spectacular running effort from a turnover, as Jordan Clark got on the end of a chain of handballs.

The 10.9 (69) to 9.10 (64) result ensured Isaac Smith claimed bragging rights over his former club in front of 50,030 fans.

The three-time Hawks premiership player was booed every time he went near the ball in his first game against Hawthorn since his off-season move to the Cattery.

After a slow start to the season, last year’s grand finalists were still well below their best but managed to do enough to keep the Hawks at bay and move to a 2-1 record.

“I think it’s about six months off my life every time (with these close games),” Cats coach Chris Scott said.

“It was hard fought and we gave them some looks late, and we didn’t quite play the way we’d like to….but we were good enough to hang in there and it adds to the list of great games that the two clubs have played.”

In a grinding, often sloppy affair, All-Australian Cameron Guthrie dominated with a career-best 43 possessions by doing as he pleased through the midfield.

Hawks champion Tom Mitchell was kept quiet by Mark O’Connor – the second-straight game the Cats stopper has done a job on a Brownlow medallist after the Irishman went with Lachie Neale last week.

A major positive for Hawthorn was the explosive speed of Changkuoth Jiath, who had the Hawks crowd roaring with his runs off half-back in only his 10th AFL game.

“We made plenty of blues across the course of the game but we somehow still found ourselves in the contest late,” Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said.

“We’re growing with every experience and in the last two weeks we’ve played the grand finalists from last year so it’s a tough start.”

Already without gun recruit Jeremy Cameron and suspended star Patrick Dangerfield, Geelong lost veteran midfielder Shaun Higgins (hamstring) and youngster Francis Evans (ankle) during the contest.

Hawks defender Kyle Hartigan could be in trouble for a clumsy strike on Tom Hawkins, which resulted in a 50m penalty and a crucial goal for the star Cats forward.

They're obviously doing it badly then. Their free kick differential is 23 against which is the highest F.A. in the league and 6 above the nearest team. They have had less frees than any team they have played against this season so your argument does not hold water. Never let a little prejudice get in the way of facts. I sometimes wonder by some comments if I am watching the same game but in a parallel universe.

Geelong were one down on the interchange bench for the last QTR and that should have tilted the game Hawthorns way .Just as Tigers GF win last year even more meritorious for having a player out early .Went to game didn't think umpiring favoured either team Tom Hawkins 9 marks in the F50 the difference .

Mr Right, I didn’t say that. Umpiring infuriates me but it is what it is. I didn’t complain. I just said others shouldn’t. Such a classic Hawks, Cats duel. Hawks in their rebuild should be proud.

Yatts, not for a moment am I blaming anyone for the Hawks loss besides themselves & their own ugly errors. I actually congratulated you on the win in good sporting fashion yesterday. My post was responding to Dean’s strange post. I thought the umpiring was poor yesterday but overall it didn’t favour any particular side. You stated “The only reason the game was close was the umpiring favouring Hawthorn”? You better clear your blue & white glasses & start viewing the game thru a clean pair. Next thing you are going to tell me is that Mark Blicavs disposed of the ball legally in the last minute the week before????

Mr R, 17 frees to Cats 24 to Hawks. Two very dubious frees to Hawks resulting in goals final quarter. Dropped mark late third quarter paid, resulting in Hawks goal. The only reason the game was close was the umpiring favouring Hawthorn. I wasn’t complaining because Razor and his band don’t like teams trying to freeze the game. I don’t either. But please don’t say the umpiring favours the Cats.

Dean, the umpire last week was not unsighted, he viewed the incident & clearly called play on. Yesterday Tom Mitchell was knocked over off the play, the umpires missed it which often happens no problem. But the umpires didn't miss it when he stupidly retaliated. Hawkins clearly copped a high shot & he received a 50 metre penalty. The best outcome that Geelong could have asked for. So what point are you trying to make? Yes Koschitzke’s penalty was a poor decision but the free kick downfield from Selwood’s kick downfield leading to a Geelong goal was an incompetent umpiring from an AFL umpire. I am sure the Umpire boss will be educating him on the proper ruling that should have been made in his game review.

Each year they use some of their nine lives. However maybe they are just a team that never gives up and fights till the end and creates their own luck. Is their anything wrong with that. Man it’s in uk football had more last minute winners than I can remember in the Fergie era but were a great side Yes they not playing great footy and if my hawks had better kicking skills we might of got the win. But don’t let the cats form hide the fact that they have Rohan, Cameron , danger and menegola to come back. The latter 3 can change that side hugely. Still think they will contend. The Game this week against demons will be intriguing. Hopefully for a hawks fan sake they don’t use one of their nine lives in a grand final.

Free kicks in Adelaide v Geelong was 31 - 16. Geelong this year is 54 - 78 in terms of free kicks for/against. The fact that one umpire made a mistake against Brisbane while probably unsighted, and also made a mistake giving Selwood's kick downfield, doesn't change the fact that there were other decisions which went against Geelong, like Koschitzke's first goal which was for a non-existent hold. Rohan is suspended for a hit to a shoulder, Dangerfield for a bump which has been legal for 100 years and Hawkins was punched in the back of the head on the weekend, but because they don't collapse like children like Neale, and know how to brace/protect themselves so they don't go nose-first into opponents they can see, there's no suspensions against them. People call Selwood a flopper, but if the cats flopped like their opponents do, there would be a lot more suspensions being handed out. All Hawkins would have had to do was lie on the ground holding his nose for a few seconds and Hartigan would have got 2 weeks. I doubt if the Cats are talking about the umpires they're talking about how lucky they are.

The cats are playing shiet. They were beaten in the first round by a team tipped to win the wooden spoon. They almost got beaten yesterday by a team tipped to finish bottom 3. Some very ugly errors by the Hawks in the last qtr & a finger nail touch got the Cats home. And we all know how they got home last week at Kardinia. The AFL publicly came out & apologised for the Blicavs blunder call. I'm tipping Melbourne next.

Short answer: Selwood is the best captain in the AFL. He never believes the game is over until the final siren has sounded.

Bliclavs should have been done holding the ball against Brisbane when Bailey got him and he should’ve been pinged again yesterday when CJ got him. Both would have resulted in almost point blank shots for the win.

Correct, between Scott, Hawkins & Duckwood no one is better at waving their arms and pressuring the umpires then Geelong.
