Latrell Mitchell in trouble as Tigers left fuming

By News / Wire

South Sydney fullback Latrell Mitchell could be facing time on the sideline for two strange incidents in Saturday’s 18-14 win over Wests Tigers.

The star fullback was put on report in the first half for a strange collision with David Nofoaluma which could either warrant a high shot or striking charge.

Mitchell swung his arm backwards, collecting Nofoaluma in the head with his forearm after the Tigers winger chipped to set up a try for Daine Laurie in the 33nd minute.

However, it was the second incident that left Wests Tigers fuming but went unpunished on the field.

Late in the second half Mitchell made a great escape out of the in-goal area to race 40 metres down the sideline before he was stopped by Tigers forward Luke Garner.

He then appeared to strike out at Garner with his foot to shake his grip, with the Tigers claiming Mitchell actually made contact in the scuffle.

The bunker cleared the contact of foul play on the field, but Tigers coach Michael Maguire said it should have been a sin-bin.

To make matters worse, Maguire claimed Mitchell touched the sideline with his boot before making the run that sparked Souths’ comeback.

“Garns ended up copping a boot at one stage,” he said.

“Technology in the game can refer to that. We end up the other end and we get a penalty against us. Those are massive momentum changers.

“That hurts, with the technology we’ve got to be using that.

“I’d like (the Garner incident) to be dealt with straight away, who knows where the game could have gone with that?

“I do not understand why we don’t use it.”

Ironically, Garner was also placed on report in the first half for a lifting tackle on Mitchell, while fellow Tigers forward Zane Musgrove is also looking at a suspension for a high shot on Mark Nicholls.

Souths are set to face Gold Coast next week, while the Tigers will play Manly.

Must have been a different Latrell at the roosters that seemingly had annual dates with the judiciary then? If you're going to the dock that often as a back, then you need to look at cleaning up your game.

He always had dangerous the combo of niggling and not being able to take the niggle. I think we cut him slack in the early years because he was young.

He was getting hard to like by the time he left the Roosters. I’m not sure if Redfern has affected him , or the NRL advertising department.

Yeah the nose holding was a bit silly, but I'll agree to disagree on the rest, thanks all the same

Mitchell getting upset at niggle is like Seagulls demand justice for a stolen chip.

Seems like the MRC are saying he did and you are struggling to deal.

Doesn't matter what the other bloke was doing to impede Mitchell, he is a million dollar adult who is obliged to know better than to lash out in a manner that endangers another player. If his opponent is getting at him, niggling, irritating, yapping in his ear - it is up to Mitchell to rely on his experience at the top end of the game and deal with it without losing control and having his team mates and his club pay the price for his indiscipline.

I could say I am happy for you but all that has nothing to do with what I posted, which is momentarily puzzling but unimportant.

Mig, as unbiased as you are when discussing the Rabbits, I'm afraid you're way off base on this one...

Adam – not sure what replay you were watching, but he didn’t kick him in the head or even go for the head, it was a shake off of his leg to get Garner to let go. Nothing in it, except Garner niggling and playing for a penalty! Watch Garner hold his nose as if he got hit. Laughable. If this was soccer Garner would have got a penalty and stretchered off, only to walk back on 2 mins later. Move on mate.

I could point to a dozen worse incidents this year alone that were much worse than anything of last nights game. (Kaufusi. JWH. Kikau – just to name a few).

Nothing in this come on. I've seen worse offences from JWH this year that have gone unpunished. Kikau's shoulder charge last week against Rapana on the floor got nothing and was far worse than anything seen from Mitchell in a year of Sundays (and Saturdays). Madge having a whinge about the loss of course, move on.

Even if a guy is holding your leg, you can't kick him in the head...

I think that the main issue was that LM's calf brushed Garner's fringe and he didn't have a comb on him to fix it up. Amusing how Garner pointed to his nose as though he was kicked in the nose and no one is complaining about his acting

Nah I didn't say he lashed out at all, I'm saying he didn't, and you can't deal with it
