Expansion, NRL Super Bowl and the Polynesian heavyweight title belt

By Jaeger / Roar Rookie

Super Rugby has just expanded to include an Auckland-based Moana Pasifika team. A Fiji team has also been added, with some games reportedly to be played out of Sydney.

One of the great new features of international NRL was the rise of Tonga at the Rugby League World Cup.

The Tonga-Samoa clash was a thing of beauty. It was also authentic.

Crowds of Tongans and Samoans in blue and red.

Did you know the Tonga moniker is Mate Maa’ Tonga, which literally translates to, ‘Die for Tonga’. Just like the State of Origin, that game was genuine.

As the NRL looks to expand, CEO Andrew Abdo is reviewing the numbers behind three bids for a second Brisbane Team for a 2023 entry. The decision is to be made mid-year.

Following this, Abdo reportedly views a second New Zealand team as a likely 18th team.

Abdo is on the track, but perhaps there is another more profitable way to go, one that, like State of Origin, focuses on authenticity and peaks excitement.

By contracting the NRL premiership to wrap up by mid-July, it opens the door for back half of the year excitement featuring a Polynesian NRL World Heavyweight Belt and an Australian rugby league Super Bowl split into two conferences: Maroon and Blue.

Polynesia-Melanesia World heavyweight belt
This division is designed to celebrate Polynesian rugby league.

Here, an authentic New Zealand-Pacific heavyweight division would comprise Polynesian and Kiwi players, with the three major New Zealand cities represented.

It would also expand into the massive United States market. A player draft would be used to pull Polynesian players in from Australian NRL Super Bowl teams.

1. Auckland Warriors: Existing team unchanged. Name changed from New Zealand Warriors back to the Auckland Warriors.
2. Canterbury Bulldogs: Included as there is a name synergy between Canterbury, Australia, and Canterbury, New Zealand. Two games would be played in Canterbury, New Zealand. Blue and white is the opposite of the Crusaders’ red and black.
3. Wellington Orcs (player draft)
4. Mate Ma’a Tonga (player draft)
5. Fiji (player draft)
6. PNG (player draft)
7. US President’s Barbarians (player draft): Three games in Hawaii, Barack Obama as number-one ticket holder.
8. Samoan Rocks (player draft): Dwyane Johnson as number-one ticket holder.

Competition format would be five rounds, followed by a three-week Page-McIntyre top-four finals system. Top two teams play off with the winner advancing to the grand final, and the loser playing in the preliminary final against the winner of third versus fourth.

The winner of the preliminary final advances to the decider.

Australian rugby league Super Bowl
The NRL would build on the authentic Maroon and Blue State of Origin brands and feature two separate competitions.

To achieve a nucleus of teams in Queensland, the 17th and 18th expansion teams would include the Redcliffe Dolphins and Western Jets (Ipswich Jets-Brisbane Bombers, who also play games out of Perth).

To provide playing talent for the Polynesian World heavyweight belt, teams in the Maroon and Blue competitions would be capped a one Polynesian-New Zealander player per team; all other Polynesian players would enter the Polynesian heavyweight belt draft.

To ensure enough playing talent to fill out the Super Bowl competition, the average height of each team must align with the average height of the NSWRL competition as it was in 1991.

Suddenly the player base opens up substantially.

Sports opinion delivered daily

It is history now that Johnathan Thurston nearly never played in the NRL because of his size. Well, there may be a lot more JTs who would suddenly play NRL.

Other rules from the 1990s would also be reintroduced, including interchange: if you go off, you stay off.

Maroon QRL competition
1. Brisbane Broncos
2. North Queensland Cowboys
3. Gold Coast Titans
4. Redcliffe Dolphins expansion team
5. Western Jets expansion team
6. Storm – the ‘Melbourne’ moniker dropped for this tournament. Linked to East Tigers and south side of Brisbane, the Storm to play two games at QSAC (QEII) Stadium.
7. Newcastle Knights
8. Canberra Raiders

Blue NSWRL Competition
At long last, the NSWRL Sydney competition is reborn!
1. Sydney Roosters
2. South Sydney Rabbitohs
3. Parramatta Eels
4. Penrith Panthers
5. St George Illawarra Dragons
6. Manly Sea Eagles
7. Wests Tigers
8. Cronulla Sharks

Both competitions would feature seven home-and-away rounds, followed by the 1973-1994 top five playoff series.

The winner of each competition would then compete in a daytime Australian rugby league Super Bowl that rotates each year between Queensland and New South Wales venues.

So, suddenly representation and opportunity for all, as authentic teams take the field.

There are a lot of winners here.

For the NRL, the big advantage is five major events, not the current two (NRL finals and State of Origin series).

For the players and fans, the opportunity to support their players in a genuine format like State of Origin.

For the NRL and NRL teams, a sudden expansion in the player base.

Yes Perth have a local competition to provide support for a team and I’m confident that they would support that team. They love their Aussie Rules in WA so the Perth team will need to attract those fans as a second game to follow.

It certainly worked in the AFL. Sydney Swans (South Melbourne Swans) Brisbane Lions (more of a merger, but still the Fitzroy Lions live on in the moniker)

Thanks Jaeger. It looks like Abdo and PV'L are abandoning expansion into the "rusted on AFL" states. Hopefully their analysis will show them that expansion into NZ is an oxymoron.

I think it's a given most people want greater involvement from the Pacific Island nations and having teams in the NRL would seem the logical next step, though of course, money will dictate if and when that happens. This is one issue where I think there are already metrics in place that will clearly show what footy fans think and you mentioned then already; how many turn up to watch Tests involving Samoa, Fiji, etc, what sort of viewing audience numbers tune in, etc. In terms of taking games to Hawaii, having an Obama Bowl and so on, there'd need to be some research done on target audiences. If you were only looking at Hawaii, which is a very popular spot for young people, it makes sense to get in with the universities and sound out the students. They'd be used things like focus groups, so that would be an easy way to gauge what sort of support there might be for this concept. All of your suggestions would take a great deal of work. I guess the issue is how much return would the NRL get and that can't be known until some of this prep work is done. To suggest these aren't good ideas without actual proof is not very cleaver, IMO. I'd be keen to see some results before suggesting there shouldn't be a Super Bowl type game.

Christchurch has league as #2. And AFL is not looking to expand there; they gave up the games they play there. AFL in NZ is viewed as something like pilates.

Nathan Buckley challenged the draft. The then Brisbane Bears drafted him but he wanted to go to a Melbourne club. He tried to resist but couldn't play elsewhere because of the draft conditions. He played an extra year in the South Australian league and then agreed to go to Brisbane for a single year if they agreed to trade him on to a Melbourne club. It turned out to be Collingwood. He ended up having to play by the rules.

NZ has cricket grounds that could be used for AF but they won't find anything comparable to the MCG. Again the small population of NZ makes it hard to find 36 fit young men with rubber knees and spines that are able to handle the jumping and landing that an Aussie Rules player needs.

I think fans are all for change until it's there team on the chopping block. The reason I think relocation is the best option is because it at least give fans an option to follow their team if they do move. Ask a bears fan or a magpie or a steeler if they would prefer relocation but maintaining there team identity or being the lesser partner in a merger.

Relocation... tadaaa.... https://www.theroar.com.au/2019/09/02/the-five-sydney-teams-that-could-relocate-to-queensland/ Judging by response to article, I relocation would be unpopular and have too much resistance.

Yes. Spot on. You nail Sydney as a standalone comp, suddenly we can be back in the 90's, with Brisbane and NZ-Polynesia following suit. Honestly though, for finances to increase, grow the pie. Have final series instead of just one.

haha. funny. I should clarify (still chuckling), Canterbury would still get home games. And arguably, being in a heavyweight comp, their brand value stands to increase globably.

The thing about NZ is the AFL is also looking to expand there. NZ is not a race to be better than Rugby. It is a race to be the second biggest sport in any city. Wellington has soccer as #2 Auckland has league as #2 Christchurch is up for grabs.

I agree with WA as an AFL state. That's why the Western Jets would be based in Ipswich and there would be a targeted number of games only in WA. These could increase over time if there is enough interested.

Thanks Soda Chook raffle at the local RSL. That's probably about right. :stoked: Personally I like finals. And if you have not one, but four finals series, I think there would be a market and supporter base.
