Tim Paine apologises to NZ cricket fans

By News / Wire

Australia captain Tim Paine has apologised to New Zealand cricket fans for predicting India would “comfortably” beat New Zealand in the World Test Championship final.

New Zealand won by eight wickets, claiming the inaugural trophy and US$1.6 million prize money ($A2.1 million).

Paine told Australian media before the match in Southampton that India “will win pretty comfortably if they play anywhere near their best.”

He said he based his assessment on New Zealand’s series win over an under-strength England before the final.

On Friday, Paine went on New Zealand radio to directly apologise to Kiwi fans.

“We all get some wrong,” Paine said on Newstalk ZB.

“I copped a bit from the Kiwi fans so I thought I’d come on air and eat some humble pie.

“I thought the New Zealanders played outstandingly. It’s always a pleasure to watch the way they go about it.

“For such a small nation – I’m from Tasmania, which is obviously our smallest resource state and we punch above our weight – so I certainly respect what the Kiwis do on an international stage.”

Lost two Australian series against india on home soil. Drawn a series in uk that he had big responsibility in not winning and was it not for smith and Cummins with super human efforts he would have lost there as well. Paine is a mediocre captain at best . Paul you have probably made 673 good comments about media darling Timmy but I know you enjoy making excuses for a losing captain . We should easily win the ashes at home this summer with our players and English poor form but if we win it will have nothing to do with paine . He’s proven time after time he’s a liability as captain and deep down plenty of fans and experts would agree . He’s been panned in the media for captaincy several times but it’s hard to pan anyone today in media due to soft pc mentality which of course assists in losing multiple test series at home as cricket australia and selectors protect their jobs and stubbornly don’t change after inexcusable results . Go figure Paul I know you won’t change and accept mediocrity and poor results and are in love with Timmy and happy to see Australia lose instead of making the best calls for the team and country

Let's look at a hypothetical. Let's assume Paine stays as captain for the Ashes and wins the series comfortably. Let's also assume he makes several good decisions during that series that affect play in a positive way for Australia. I'm guessing you've written around 672 negative comments about Paine and his captaincy in the past year and a bit. If all of the things happen as I've suggested, are you going to admit you were wrong even once, let alone 600 odd times as you should in this forum? Never mind, don't bother to answer, I know you won't change. You're rusted on to an idea and that's that.

After his other prediction went wrong "see you at the gabba", you kind of DON'T want Tim to predict your side will win. NZ should be thankful he saw the final going differently to what happened.

Um your bias for losing home test series and being a paine groupie is greater. He has lost two series to India at home which has never happened . Get a reality bite Paul . It’s not good enough . Uk ashes another poor captain effort . How many times is enough to give the guy a fuzzy feel good send off or worse a loss if we leave it to his captaincy decisions . Also I’m not suggesting we will lose because of paine, we are simply not doing the right thing for Australia . Stop making Bs up for your bias towards paine and looking past Australia losing under him and his numerous blunders . The results speak for themselves. Any other country would have binned him. I guess you enjoy losing on home soil though let alone drawing ashes series in uk instead of winning them . Mediocre mindset . You need to own the fact the results are not good enough and hes bungled up captaincy in tests numerous times . Nothing to do with his wicktkeeping but that was beginning to faulter last summer too. He’s getting on for a cricketer . We need carey and inglis in there for obvious reasons . Runs and keeping and smith back as captain on field he’s better on field . Simple as that . Drop all the fuzzy feel good or behind paine . Let’s get back to preparing for future and winning

Incorrect Paul pain can do what’s right for Australia and move on. He has captained two losing indian test series at home and drawn ashes series in uk which should have been an outright win but for his bungling decision making and tactics . Not good enough to captain Australia he was an interim captain . Brilliant keeper over the decades and had awful injuries but time to move on with new keeper and more balance in team after losing a series at home and he’s getting on . The marketing cricket Aus bs and pandering to him after losing is ridiculous m other countries would have moved him on for sure . Your wrong paul and way to forgiving for a captain that is losing series on home soil let alone blundering with tactics and drs so badly . Have to call it for what it is unless you like losing series at home

Your Paine bias is showing again, Pierro. This guy is made for TV and I'd reckon any number of broadcasters would be waiting for him to sign up for them. If you're suggesting Australia will lose the Ashes because of Tim Paine, I think you might be in a club of one with that idea.

You're dislike of Paine is reaching new heights, Pierro. Paine has no say over whether he stays, just like all the other cricketers before him good enough to wear the baggy green. If selectors thinks he's the best option to keep wickets for Australia and captain the side, that's their call, not his.

No doubt paine will try and stay on no matter what , he won't do what's best for Australia even if we win this summer . Paine is now a captain liability england are grateful we have not had the cahuenas to move him on since losing to India on home soil

Micko but don't you know by now paine is naive and clueless at tactics and assessment of the game . He's got Australia beaten many times when they should have won via his poor decision making

I mostly remember Cairns smashing Australian bowlers to all parts.

The underarm was a cultural ‘thing’, it forced people to consider the actual spirit of cricket. Every team has its flogs that are regrettable. Cairns, Vincent, Cronje, Warner & Smith, and many many more. If we’re talking about cheaters and how best to fortify the game, definitely they should be brought up.

That's an interesting idea. I know he's coaching a county team. Has he expressed a future interest in the national gig?
