Socceroos legend named new Western United head coach

By News / Wire

Former Socceroos star John Aloisi will return to the A-League coaching ranks after agreeing to take charge of expansion club Western United.

Aloisi has signed a two-year deal with Western United and will take over from Mark Rudan who was sacked at the end of the club’s 2020-21 campaign.

Revered in national soccer circles for scoring the decisive penalty to earn Australia qualification for the 2006 World Cup, Aloisi hasn’t coached since parting ways with Brisbane Roar in 2018.

The 45-year-old had four seasons at the Roar following a short-lived stint with Melbourne Heart.

“United is still so much in its development stage, being just two seasons in,” Aloisi said.

“In this role, I’m privileged not only to coach, but to be part of building a club and a football future for the people of the west (in Melbourne).”

Western United commence pre-season training on Monday and Aloisi will join the the team as soon as it is possible while working within Victorian government border restrictions.

As a decorated player, Aloisi made 55 appearances for Australia and scored 27 goals in an international career spanning more than a decade.

Rudan was appointed the expansion club’s inaugural coach in 2019 after a season in charge of Wellington Phoenix.

He made a promising start as Western fell one game short of making the A-League grand final.

After beginning their 2020-21 campaign on a bright note, Western lost their last eight matches to finish a lowly 10th on the ladder.

Hopefully they respond. I like the idea behind their nomdaic travels to include regional areas such as ballarat. And if you look at the 11.07 game of GWS v GCS at Mars, it was only a 2952 turn out. So WU werent that far off. But it obviously wasnt great as they were playing out of afl stadiums so not really sure what they were planning to achieve with that from the outset. Is the only football stadium they played out of being AAMI? Well whats the point of a 3rd team at AAMI? Heart used to cop all the flack and than the FA puts a 3rd team in there. I hope the stadium goes ahead as it would be a massive boost for vic but you would think that it would be ready for the womens world cup. Also a club that is spending 150m on a stadium could potentially have payed for the light upgrade at Melbourne Knights and spent 5 or so seasons there...at an a football stadium, not afl. But as you said it's all speculation as we dont know the details behind any of this.

That's true but lets give them a fair and reasonable time to reply. None of us know all of the 'facts' about their application to the A League, we all have given the FFA and Fox the blame for taking their money and for accepting their proposal on face value. To be fair, what else were they expected to do? We have all heard every ones point of view regarding their admission and some peoples position on there constant moving around playing their home games, here, there and everywhere. None of us actually know for fact, what their situation is, yes there is speculation, but it seems for some people it is much easier to crucify them for being so audacious as to include a stadium build into their application. Those who understand how governments and councils operate also know that the stadium will have to be built if agreements have been made to do so. I am pretty sure that those investing into the football club are doing so with a long term plan in mind. Where as, we football people want proof and action rather than promises. Do I think the stadium will be built, yes, I do. Do I think it will start this December as stated by the local council, yes I do. And yes I think it will be ready sometime in 2023. In time for the the season that year, well that depends on when that season plans to KO. building plans and the actual work will be fluid, it may be finished ahead of time, it may be finished on time but most likely it will be delivered later than planned as are most large building projects. I also think that there are far too many of us, who prefer to sit in judgement of things we know nothing about just because we can. I believe in trusting in people's words until they prove they can't be trusted. So I will wait (im) patiently for the club to respond.

True but you would hope the council would chuck in about half. Quite a number of vic football pitches are going through light upgrades and now Friday night games are becoming more popular.

Hopefully he does okay as he was super dry to listen to during the euros on the optus commentary team. That studio commentary team was pretty bad. Sbs and fox were miles ahead with their studio commentary team. I only hope Paramount took note.

Doesnt bode well for the culture of the club if they promise the fans and the league something and than dont say anything about it.

Yeah for a couple hundred of k they could be actually creating an identity and there would be new lights at a football stadium. Instead we have a 3rd team at AAMI. Nothing western about it.

they royally screwed up by not agreeing to upgrade the lighting at knights stadium. forget upgrading of the stands, (its not like western united have ever got crowds in excess of 5000 lol). The lighting upgrade would've given them a stadium right in there back yard while they wait for the new monster one to be complete in about 5 years time

We could all do what I did and email the club directly for information. The big test for them will be in their reply, both in what they say and how long it takes them to reply for the request on information about their new stadium.

Last public announcement was that they have what is called Planning Approval....all that means is that the land has been rezoned to make it possible. They appear to have made no observable progress on the project itself....and will still need to gain Development Approval and a Construction Certificate ( or the Vic equivalents)... usually an 18mth process in itself....Then about 18mth construction...3 years in total if they commit to the process today. They might be able to shave say 12mths off that if the council expedites the DA and the use some fast track and simplified construction..Though the latest design images show it has already been pared back quite considerably from the initial concept. So football at Tarneit is still some way off.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, that is part of the problem, lack of communication from the club, leading to a lack of faith in where this club is heading.

I think the last update on the Stadium came from the local council not the club. This both makes sense and at the same time is a worry. I believe that the club should be proactive and keep their members and fans updated, as well as the football family in general.

I doubt they will go down the gurgler as they are set up now so I dont think the A League can afford any teams to fold. However the fact that their nomadic travels didnt work and now they are playing out of AAMI as well as NO evidence of a stadium being built after 2 full season is a bit of a joke. The Team 11 Dandenong bid at least werent planning to play out of AAMI. What is Western about them if they are playing out of the cbd in the same stadium as Victory and City. If their stadium isnt built than that was a complete flop of a club. And appointing Aliosi doesnt seem like they are planning to challenge anything anytime soon like Macarthur.

If you asked me what was the worst/what irritates the most decision made in the A-League, pre APL in the last few years, Western United is it. What fan base has been created in two nomadic years? A stadium update is necessary ASAP, as I see this club going down the gurgler otherwise.
